What Is an MCP Server for Sales?

An MCP server gives an AI assistant a safe way to look up people and companies. Here is how it works, how it differs from an API, and what it costs to run.

An MCP server for sales is a program that lets an AI assistant call sales tools by name. Examples are people search, email lookup and company enrichment.

Key takeaways

  • MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that connects AI apps to outside tools and data.
  • A sales MCP server exposes lookups like search, enrich and count as tools the assistant can call.
  • An MCP server is not a CRM or a sequencer. It supplies data and actions to the assistant you already use.
  • The cost that matters is records spent. Ask for a free count before any search that returns rows.

What it is

An MCP server for sales is a program that exposes sales data and actions as tools that an MCP-compatible AI assistant can discover and call.

MCP is an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems, per the MCP introduction (September 2026). The project compares it to a USB-C port: one shape that fits many devices.

The "for sales" part is only about what the tools do. The protocol is the same for a filesystem server and a lead data server. A sales server just offers tools like search people, get a work email and look up a company.

How it works

Three parts are involved. The MCP host is the AI app, such as Claude or Cursor. The MCP client is the connection the host opens for each server. The MCP server is the program that provides context, per the MCP architecture overview (September 2026).

  1. You add the server's URL to your AI app. For a remote server, that is one HTTPS address.
  2. You sign in. Remote servers typically use OAuth, which MCP recommends, so no API key is pasted into a chat.
  3. The client asks the server what it offers. The server replies with a list of tools, each with a name, a description and its inputs.
  4. You ask a question in plain language. The model picks a tool and fills in the inputs.
  5. The client sends the call as a JSON-RPC 2.0 message. The server runs it and returns the result.
  6. The model reads the result and answers you, or calls another tool.

Worked example. You type: "How many VP-level sales leaders in Canada can I email?" The assistant chooses a count tool and sends the filters. It gets a number back and tells you. Nothing was spent, because a count returns a total and no rows.

You then say: "Show me 25." The assistant calls the search tool with a limit of 25. That call returns 25 people and spends 25 records.

MCP server vs API

An MCP server is a standard front door for AI assistants. A REST API is a front door for code you write. Most data vendors with an MCP server also have an API behind it, and they do the same work.

Pick MCP when a person asks the questions. Pick the API when a job runs unattended and the same call repeats thousands of times.

When it matters

You size an audience before you build a list

A count tool answers "is this worth pulling?" without spending anything. The assistant can try several filter combinations and report which one is thin. This is the best first use of an MCP server for sales.

You research one account before a call

Ask for the people at a domain, then enrich the two you care about. The assistant strings the calls together and summarizes. You get a briefing instead of three browser tabs.

An agent builds lists on a schedule

A scheduled agent can run the same search every Monday with new filters. Here the cost model matters. Per-record pricing multiplies fast when an agent loops. Check how your vendor meters failed lookups before you let one run unattended.

You want data in a chat, not a new app

Your team may already work in Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor. An MCP server adds data to that place, and nobody learns a new interface. If you need sequences, a dialer or a CRM, an MCP server does not replace them.

How LeadOcean handles it

LeadOcean runs a hosted MCP server at https://api.leadocean.io/mcp. It uses OAuth 2.1, so you sign in and no key is pasted. It has 12 tools, and the search filters are the same ones the REST API takes.

Add it to Claude Code with claude mcp add --transport http leadocean https://api.leadocean.io/mcp, then run claude mcp login leadocean. The MCP docs list the steps for Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Codex, VS Code, Windsurf and Gemini CLI (September 2026).

Six tools are free: count_leads, list_filters, list_enum_values, get_account, get_export and list_exports. Search tools cost 1 record per person or company returned. An MCP get_lead that finds nobody costs nothing.

The tool that maps to this page's example is count_leads. When your assistant runs the count from the worked example, the client sends a message like this:

json
{
  "jsonrpc": "2.0",
  "id": 1,
  "method": "tools/call",
  "params": {
    "name": "leadocean_count_leads",
    "arguments": {
      "jobLevel": ["VP"],
      "jobFunction": ["Sales & Business Development"],
      "country": ["CA"],
      "facets": false
    }
  }
}

The same filters returned 5,066 mailable people on 2026-09-30. Mailable means verified, catch_all_valid or catch_all email status, the default for the count tool. Counts move as the dataset refreshes monthly, so treat that number as dated.

The Free plan gives 1,000 records one-off, with no card, on the same MCP server as Pro. Pro is $499 a month, flat. See pricing.

FAQ

Is an MCP server the same as an API?

No. An API is a set of HTTP endpoints for code. An MCP server is a layer that describes tools in a standard way so an AI assistant can find and call them. Many MCP servers call an API underneath.

Do I need to code to use an MCP server for sales?

No. You paste a URL into an MCP-compatible app and sign in. After that you ask in plain language. You only write code if you call the REST API directly.

Can an MCP server send emails or run sequences?

A data server like LeadOcean cannot. It returns people, work emails, phones and company records. Sending belongs to your email tool or sequencer, which the assistant can drive through its own MCP server if it has one.

How much does it cost to use one?

It depends on the vendor's metering. With LeadOcean, counts are free, each person returned counts as 1 record, and Pro is $499 a month. Read the vendor's pricing page for how misses and retries are billed.

Is my data safe when an assistant calls the server?

The server only sees the calls the assistant makes. With OAuth you can revoke access from your account at any time. This is not legal or security advice. Check your own policies before pointing any assistant at customer data.
