You get a Clay table that takes a company domain and returns how many people that company has in each country, plus an international total. It costs LeadOcean $0 and no records, because the sizing call is free. The count is people LeadOcean holds on the domain, not the company's payroll, so treat it as a ratio and a signal. Clay's HTTP API column needs Growth or higher (Clay pricing, September 2026).
Clay publishes a template with the same name (Clay template, September 2026). This recipe spells out the call, the field paths and the cost.
How it works
- Add the domains. Create a text column named
Domain, one bare domain per row (acme.com, no https). Add a second column,Home Country, with the two-letter ISO code, such asUS. - Add an HTTP API column. Method GET, URL
https://api.leadocean.io/v1/people/search(Clay docs, September 2026). - Set the query string. Pass
domain,count=true,limit=1andfacets=true. Withlimit=1the call is a sizing call: no rows, no records spent (LeadOcean docs, September 2026). - Return the facets. Ask for
meta.totalandmeta.facets.country. - Compute the international count. In a formula column, subtract the home country's bucket from
meta.total. Divide by the total for the share. - Test on five rows, set a per-column rate limit under 5 requests a second on Free, then run the table.
Configuration
In Clay's query string fields, /Domain is the column reference (Clay docs, September 2026).
Method: GET
URL: https://api.leadocean.io/v1/people/search
Headers: x-api-key: <your LeadOcean key>
Query: domain=/Domain
count=true
limit=1
facets=true
Field paths to return:
meta.total
meta.facets.country
meta.distinctCompaniesTest the same call from a terminal with a placeholder domain.
curl -G "https://api.leadocean.io/v1/people/search" \
-H "x-api-key: $LEADOCEAN_API_KEY" \
--data-urlencode "domain=acme.com" \
--data-urlencode "count=true" \
--data-urlencode "limit=1" \
--data-urlencode "facets=true"For one named country, add country=DE to the same call. meta.total is then the headcount in that country. Countries are ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 codes, so check them with leadocean_list_enum_values or GET /v1/enums.
Field mapping
| LeadOcean field | Clay column | Note |
|---|---|---|
meta.total | People held | Exact, free with limit=1. Capped at 100,000 on a very broad filter. |
meta.facets.country | Headcount by country | A list of {value, count}, largest first, with the ISO code as the value. Small countries may fall off the list. |
| Home country bucket | Home headcount | Pick it with a formula on Home Country. |
meta.total minus home bucket | International employees | Computed in Clay, not returned by LeadOcean. |
meta.distinctCompanies | Employers matched | Above 1 means the domain maps to more than one employer name. |
Cost at 10,000 rows
10,000 domains cost LeadOcean $0 and no records. A search with count=true and limit=1 is free on every plan, Free included (LeadOcean docs, September 2026).
LeadOcean. The Free plan holds 1,000 records for life at 5 requests a second, so 10,000 sizing calls take about 33 minutes at that rate. Solo is $97 a month at 50 requests a second. Agency is $497 a month at 200 requests a second (LeadOcean pricing).
Clay. Each HTTP API call uses one Action, so 10,000 rows use 10,000 Actions. Growth includes 40,000 Actions a month and costs $495 a month billed monthly, or $446 billed yearly (Clay pricing, September 2026). The recipe spends no Data Credits.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No HTTP API column | Clay Free or Launch plan | The column starts on Growth (Clay pricing, September 2026). Or run the calls from a script. |
| 401 on every row | Wrong header | Use x-api-key, not Authorization. |
meta.total is 0 | LeadOcean holds nobody on that domain | Expected and free. Check the domain has no www. or path. |
data is not empty and records are spent | limit missing or above 1 | Send limit=1 with count=true. |
| Country bucket not found | Home country sent as a name | Use the ISO code, such as GB, not United Kingdom. |
| 429 errors | Over 5 requests a second on Free | Lower Clay's per-column rate limit and honor Retry-After. |
FAQ
Is this the company's real headcount by country?
No. It is the number of people LeadOcean holds with that domain as their employer, by their listed location. Use it to rank companies by international spread, not to quote payroll.
Can I size the companies before I enrich them?
Yes. GET /v1/companies/count sizes a company list for free with the company-search filters. See find companies and company employees.
Can I find the people behind the count?
Yes. Drop limit=1 and count, add country, and each person returned is one record. To email them, see find email from company domain.
Do I need a card to try it?
No. The free plan needs no card and gives 1,000 records for life. All features are on it.
