You get a Clay table with one row per company. Each row holds a news item, two customers, an open job count, a contact and a drafted email. LeadOcean supplies the company profile and the contact. Clay's template adds positive news, two customers and the open job count, then writes the email (Clay template, October 2026).
LeadOcean does not return press, customer lists or job postings. Use it for the part that is a database lookup.
How it works
- Create a LeadOcean key. Sign up at app.leadocean.io/register. Free gives 1,000 records, once, with no card.
- Add a Domain column. One company per row, for example
acme.com. - Add a company enrich column. An HTTP API column calls
POST /v1/companies/enrichwith the domain. It returns industry, size and location for the email's opening line. - Add a contact search and enrich. One column calls
POST /v1/people/searchfor the buyer's function and level,limit1. A second callsPOST /v1/people/enrichwith the row'sperson_idandreveal_emailtrue. Set "Only run if" so empty searches skip. - Add the research columns. Add three Use AI columns with web research: one for a recent news item, one for two customers, one for the open job count. Clay lists customer-list research from a company site as a Use AI task (Clay docs, October 2026).
- Add the AI email column. Pass the company profile, the news item, the customers and the job count. Ask for four sentences, one hook.
- Run five rows first. Read every draft before you run the rest.
Configuration
Clay's HTTP API column takes a method, URL, headers, a JSON body and dot-notation field paths (Clay docs, October 2026). The company column looks like this. /Domain is Clay's column reference.
Method: POST
URL: https://api.leadocean.io/v1/companies/enrich
Headers: x-api-key: <your LeadOcean key>
content-type: application/json
Body: { "domain": "/Domain" }
Field paths to return:
data.company_data.company_name
data.company_data.company_industries
data.company_data.company_employees
data.company_data.company_primary_addressTest the same calls in a terminal first.
curl -X POST "https://api.leadocean.io/v1/companies/enrich" \
-H "x-api-key: $LEADOCEAN_API_KEY" \
-H "content-type: application/json" \
-d '{"domain":"acme.com"}'
curl -X POST "https://api.leadocean.io/v1/people/search" \
-H "x-api-key: $LEADOCEAN_API_KEY" \
-H "content-type: application/json" \
-d '{"domain":["acme.com"],"jobFunction":["Sales & Business Development"],"jobLevel":["VP","Director"],"limit":1}'Field mapping

company_data.company_employees | Headcount | Holds number_of_employees. |
company_data.company_primary_address | Location | HQ address, when held. |
data[].meta.source_ids.person_id | Contact ID | From the search. Feed it to the enrich column. |
data.contact_data.email_status | Email status | Draft only when verified or catch_all_valid. |
data.contact_data.contact_emails | Contact emails | Pick the work address in a Clay formula. |
data.contact_data.contact_current_experiences | Contact role | Job title and company name for the greeting. |
Key names come from the LeadOcean docs (company, person, October 2026). Press clips, customers and job counts stay Clay columns. They have no LeadOcean field.
Cost at 10,000 rows
At 10,000 companies LeadOcean returns up to 30,000 records: a company enrich, a search row and a person enrich per row. A miss costs nothing.
LeadOcean. Free covers 1,000 records once, about 330 companies. Solo at $97 a month allows 10k enrichments every 5 hours and 50k a week. The run's 20,000 enrichments fit the week; past 10k in 5 hours the key slows, it does not stop. Agency at $497 a month allows 1M enrichments a day.
Clay. The HTTP API column is Growth and Enterprise (Clay pricing, September 2026). Each HTTP call and each AI run uses one Action, so seven columns use 70,000 Actions (Clay docs, October 2026). Web research costs 1 Data Credit a row on Clay's Helium model and the email 0.4 on GPT-5 Mini, about 34,000 credits (Clay docs, October 2026). That needs Growth's 100,000-Action and 50,000-credit tiers: $450 + $2,125 = $2,575 a month billed monthly (Clay pricing, September 2026).
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP API column missing | Free or Launch plan | HTTP API is Growth and Enterprise (Clay pricing, September 2026). Import a LeadOcean CSV instead. |
| Company column returns 404 | Domain not in LeadOcean data | Expected, and free. Skip the row or check the domain spelling. |
| Search column is empty | No person held at that level | Widen jobLevel or add a title list. |
| 402 from the API | Free records spent | Move to Solo or Agency on pricing. |
| 429 on big runs | Over your plan's requests per second | Lower the column rate limit. Free allows 5 a second, Solo 50, Agency 200. |
FAQ
Does LeadOcean provide press clips or job openings?
No. LeadOcean returns company and people data. News, customers and job counts come from Clay's research columns or your own scraper.
How do I make the email read as personal?
Lead with the news item, mention one customer, then tie the job count to a problem. Keep it short. See hyper-personalized cold emails.
Can I use more than one research source?
Yes. Write personalized emails using multiple types of research adds more inputs, and website data covers the site-based version.
Where do I send the drafts?
LeadOcean has no sequencer. Push the drafts to your own sending tool and check email_status first.
