6 Best Cold Email Campaign Tools in 2026

Six tools that send or feed cold email, with list prices, send caps, API and MCP access, and what a million emails a month costs.

Get your free API key →Free to start. No credit card. 1,000 records to spend whenever you like.

A cold email campaign tool sends sequences from your own mailboxes, tracks replies and stops when someone answers. The best cold email campaigns also need a clean list, and most senders do not make one.

Teams leave a sender for four sourced reasons. Instantly and Smartlead cap emails per plan, so a big month means a tier jump. Smartlead keeps its API off the Base plan. lemlist caps the Email plan at 50,000 emails. Apollo bills per seat and meters credits, which is why we wrote an Apollo alternative for teams that use it as a data source.

We rank five senders and one data layer. All prices are list prices, monthly billing first and yearly after, checked in September and October 2026. See also how to choose cold email marketing tools.

What we evaluated

We did not run a live send test for this page. Everything below comes from vendor pricing pages and API docs, read in September and October 2026.

  • Send cap per plan. How many emails a month before you must change tier, and what that tier costs.
  • Price at volume. The list price at 500,000 and at 1M emails, or a plain "no public price".
  • API and MCP. Whether an agent or a script can create campaigns and read replies, and on which plan.
  • Rate limit. Requests per second or minute, per key or per workspace.
  • List quality. Whether the tool returns an email status before you send, because bounces hurt every mailbox you own.

1. Instantly: best for send volume per dollar

Instantly sells sending capacity. Outreach plans start at $47 a month for 5,000 emails and 1,000 uploaded contacts. Hypergrowth is $97 a month for 125,000 emails and 25,000 contacts. Light Speed is $358 a month for 500,000 emails (Instantly pricing, October 2026).

Every plan includes unlimited email accounts and unlimited warm-up. There is no overage charge: past the cap you move up a tier. Enterprise starts at 500,000+ emails and is custom priced.

The API allows 100 requests a second and 6,000 a minute per workspace, shared across keys (Instantly API docs, October 2026). It also runs an MCP server for Claude and Cursor (Instantly MCP docs, October 2026).

Pros

  • Cheapest published price per email in this list: $358 for 500,000 emails.
  • Unlimited mailboxes and warm-up on every plan.
  • API, webhooks and an MCP server.
  • Clear tiers with no overage invoice.

Cons

  • The pricing page shows Hypergrowth as 125,000 emails in one place and 100,000 in the comparison table. Plan to the lower number.
  • Uploaded contacts are capped (1,000 on Growth), so a big list means a bigger plan.
  • No public price at 1M emails. Enterprise is a sales call.

Best for: teams that send 100,000 to 500,000 emails a month from many mailboxes. Pricing: $47, $97 and $358 a month for Growth, Hypergrowth and Light Speed (Instantly pricing, October 2026). Yearly prices are not shown in the page text, so we quote monthly only.

2. Smartlead: best for agencies and API-driven sending

Smartlead prices by send volume and verified-email allowance, not by seat or mailbox. Base is $39 a month for 6,000 sends. Pro is $94 for 90,000. Unlimited Smart is $174 for 150,000, and Unlimited Prime is $379 for 500,000 (Smartlead pricing, October 2026). Yearly billing brings those to $32.50, $78.30, $144.50 and $314.60 a month.

Pro adds CRM access, API and webhooks, and the option to buy client workspaces. Base has no API. Prime includes three client workspaces and three private SmartServers.

API limits are 60 requests a minute on the Standard tier and 120 on Pro, per key (Smartlead API docs, October 2026). Smartlead's API index lists no MCP server (Smartlead llms.txt, October 2026).

Pros

  • Unlimited mailboxes on every plan.
  • Client workspaces make it the natural pick for agencies.
  • Verified prospect emails are included on Smart and Prime (50,000 and 170,000 a month).
  • Inbox rotation and a premium warm-up pool on the upper plans.

Cons

  • No API on Base, and a low request rate on every tier.
  • Verified emails are a $59 a month add-on on Base and Pro.
  • No public price above 500,000 emails a month.

Best for: agencies and engineers who drive campaigns by API. Pricing: $39, $94, $174 and $379 a month; $32.50, $78.30, $144.50 and $314.60 billed yearly (Smartlead pricing, October 2026).

3. lemlist: best for multichannel and signals

lemlist is a multichannel tool that starts with email. The Email plan is $69 a month ($55 billed yearly) with unlimited users and senders and 50,000 emails a month. Multichannel is $109 a month ($87 yearly) and adds LinkedIn, SMS, a dialer and unlimited emails and messages (lemlist pricing, October 2026).

The Email plan includes an API, a lead database of 650M+ leads, and an MCP server and CLI. Data add-ons cost extra: $20 a month for 2,000 enrichment credits, or 400 emails (lemlist pricing, October 2026).

The API allows 20 requests every 2 seconds per key (lemlist API docs, October 2026). The MCP server signs in with OAuth (lemlist MCP docs, October 2026).

Pros

  • Email, LinkedIn, SMS and calls in one sequence.
  • Unlimited users and senders on the entry plan.
  • MCP server with OAuth, so no key is pasted into a chat.
  • Signals and AI agents built in.

Cons

  • The Email plan stops at 50,000 emails a month.
  • Lead data is a paid add-on with its own credits.
  • Unlimited emails on Multichannel has no published fair-use line, so a 1M month has no public price.

Best for: outbound teams that mix email with LinkedIn and calls. Pricing: $69 and $109 a month; $55 and $87 billed yearly (lemlist pricing, October 2026).

4. Saleshandy: best for sending plus built-in lead data

Saleshandy bundles sending with a lead database of 852M+ contacts. Starter is $41 a month for 6,000 emails. Pro is $99 for 100,000 emails and 10 users. Scale is $189 for 200,000 emails and unlimited users. Yearly billing is $34, $76 and $149 (Saleshandy pricing, October 2026).

Every plan has unlimited email accounts, unlimited warm-up, API access and MCP access. Lead Finder credits are included each month: 1,500 on Starter, 4,000 on Pro and 8,000 on Scale. A verified email costs 1 credit and a phone number costs 6.

The pricing page lists API and MCP access on every plan but gives no API rate limit.

Pros

  • Seats are never billed per user.
  • Lead data and sending sit under one bill.
  • API and MCP on every plan.
  • Pay only for verified emails.

Cons

  • The 200,000 email cap on Scale is the lowest top tier here.
  • Lead credits are small next to the send cap: 8,000 credits against 200,000 emails.
  • No public price at 1M emails. Enterprise is custom.

Best for: small teams that want one tool for the list and the send. Pricing: $41, $99 and $189 a month; $34, $76 and $149 billed yearly (Saleshandy pricing, October 2026).

5. Apollo: best for reps who want data and sequences in one app

apollo homepage

Apollo is a contact database with sequences, a dialer and a Chrome extension. It is priced per seat. Basic is $65 a seat per month ($49 yearly) with 2,500 credits. Professional is $99 ($79) with 4,000. Organization is $149 ($119) with 6,000 and a three-seat minimum (Apollo pricing, September 2026).

An email costs 1 credit and a phone number costs 8. Credits expire each cycle. Apollo is the one tool here with a computable 1M cost. 1M email lookups need 250 Professional seats, or $24,750 a month at monthly list price (Apollo pricing, September 2026). On yearly billing the cheapest path is 400 Basic seats, $19,600 a month.

The API allows 200 requests a minute on paid plans for general endpoints, and enrichment reaches 1,000 a minute (Apollo API docs, September 2026). Apollo has an MCP server on every plan, Free included (Apollo MCP docs, September 2026).

Pros

  • Data, sequences, dialer and inbox in one workspace.
  • A real Free plan with API and MCP access.
  • Credits are pooled across the team.

Cons

  • Per-seat pricing grows with headcount, not with volume.
  • Credits do not roll over, and extra credits have no published price.
  • Selection limits per action (1,000 on Basic, 10,000 on Organization) make big pulls slow.

Best for: sales reps who work in one app all day. Pricing: Free, then $65, $99 and $149 per seat a month; $49, $79 and $119 billed yearly (Apollo pricing, September 2026).

6. LeadOcean: best for the list behind the campaign

LeadOcean does not send email. It is the data layer: 693M people, 366M with an email, over REST and a hosted MCP server. You build the list, then export a CSV into any tool above.

The tie to a campaign is the free count. leadocean_count_leads sizes an audience before you spend a record. On 2026-09-30 it returned 5,066 mailable VP-level sales contacts in Canada. Over REST, a count is one search call with count=true:

bash
curl -X POST "https://api.leadocean.io/v1/people/search?count=true&limit=1" \
  -H "x-api-key: $LEADOCEAN_API_KEY" \
  -H "content-type: application/json" \
  -d '{"jobLevel":["VP"],"jobFunction":["Sales & Business Development"],"country":["CA"],"emailStatus":["verified","catch_all_valid","catch_all"]}'

Every address carries one of 13 email statuses, so you can drop risky and spam_trap before they reach a sender. Bounces are not refunded, so read the status first.

Pros

  • Flat pricing: Free is $0, Solo is $97, Agency is $497 and Platform is $1,997 a month, with no credits.
  • Counts, filters and enum lookups are free.
  • REST and MCP on every plan, 13 MCP tools.
  • Agency exports 50,000 rows a file with POST /v1/exports.

Cons

  • It does not send. No sequences, dialer, CRM or Chrome extension.
  • Bulk CSV export is not on Free.
  • No intent or signal data of its own.

Best for: engineers and agencies that build the list by API or agent and send from Instantly, Smartlead or lemlist. Pricing: Free (1,000 records, one-off), Solo $97, Agency $497 and Platform $1,997 a month (LeadOcean pricing, October 2026).

  • You run campaigns for clients: Smartlead, for workspaces and an API on Pro and up.
  • You mix email, LinkedIn and calls: lemlist.
  • You want one bill for list and sending: Saleshandy, or Apollo if reps live in the app.

  • You send over 1M emails a month: ask Instantly or Smartlead for Enterprise pricing. Neither prints one.

Verdict

Instantly wins on send volume per dollar. Smartlead wins for agencies and API-driven sending. lemlist wins for multichannel, and Saleshandy for a small team that wants data and sending on one bill. Apollo wins for reps who want one workspace. LeadOcean is not a sender, but it wins the list: free counts, an email status on every address, and a flat Agency price of $497 a month. Pair it with the sender that fits your volume. Mind the rules too: see CAN-SPAM for cold email and how to personalize cold emails with AI.

FAQ

What is the best cold email campaign tool?

For volume, Instantly. For agencies, Smartlead. For multichannel, lemlist. The right answer depends on emails a month and whether you need an API. lemlist and Saleshandy add lead credits, but their monthly allowances are small next to their send caps, so pair the sender with a data source.

How much does it cost to send 1M cold emails a month?

No sender here prints a public 1M price. Instantly tops out at 500,000 emails for $358 a month, Smartlead at 500,000 for $379, and both then go to Enterprise. Ask for a quote.

Do I need a separate warm-up tool?

Instantly, Smartlead and Saleshandy include warm-up. See best cold email warm-up tools for dedicated options.

Can an AI agent run these tools?

Instantly, lemlist, Saleshandy and Apollo have MCP servers. LeadOcean has one too, with 13 tools, and it builds the list the agent then sends.

Where do the leads come from?

From a data source you size first. LeadOcean's count is free, and bounces are not refunded, so filter on email_status before you send. Start with the pricing page.
