Integration recipe

LeadOcean + Clay: build an account list and score it on tech and firmographics

Search companies by detected technology and headcount, load them into Clay, and score each one with a formula.

Get your free API key →Free to start. No credit card. 1,000 records to spend whenever you like.

You get a Clay table of target companies, each with headcount, industry, revenue where held, detected technologies and a 0 to 100 fit score. LeadOcean builds the list from its company search. Clay holds the table and runs the score formula. The list needs a free LeadOcean key. The optional enrich column needs Clay Growth or higher (Clay pricing, September 2026).

How it works

  1. Size the list first. Call GET /v1/companies/count with your filters. It is free and returns the exact total plus breakdowns by industry, headcount band and HQ country (LeadOcean docs, October 2026). Narrow until the total fits your budget.
  2. Search the companies. Call POST /v1/companies/search with technologies, employeeRange, hqCountry and hasMailableContacts. Each company returned is one record. One search pages to 10,000 rows, then meta.depthCapped turns true (LeadOcean docs, September 2026).
  3. Save the rows as a CSV. Keep company_domain, company_name, headcount, revenue and the technology count. A short script or the MCP tool leadocean_search_companies both work.
  4. Import the CSV into Clay. In a table choose Tools, Import, Import from CSV (Clay docs, September 2026).
  5. Add a formula column called Fit Score. Weight each signal, then sum. The example below is a starting point, not a standard.
  6. Optional: enrich a domain list you already own. Add an HTTP API column that calls POST /v1/companies/enrich per domain. Gate it with "Only run if" on a filled domain (Clay docs, September 2026).
  7. Sort by score and work the top band.

Configuration

Step 2, the search. Technology names are exact strings, so check them with GET /v1/enums first. hqCountry takes ISO codes such as US.

bash
curl -X POST "https://api.leadocean.io/v1/companies/search" \
  -H "x-api-key: $LEADOCEAN_API_KEY" \
  -H "content-type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "technologies": ["HubSpot"],
    "employeeRange": ["201-500", "501-1000"],
    "hqCountry": ["US"],
    "hasMailableContacts": true,
    "limit": 100
  }'

Page with meta.nextCursor. Add count=true as a query parameter with limit=1 to size a search for free.

Step 6, Clay's HTTP API column, only for a domain list you bring.

text
Method:   POST
URL:      https://api.leadocean.io/v1/companies/enrich
Headers:  x-api-key: <your LeadOcean key>
          content-type: application/json
Body:     { "domain": "/Domain" }
Field paths to return:
          data.company_data.company_employees
          data.company_data.company_revenue_in_usd
          data.company_data.company_number_of_detected_technologies
          data.company_metrics.marketability_score

An example score, written as a plain formula you can paste into a Clay formula column.

text
(tech_match ? 40 : 0)
+ (headcount between 200 and 1000 ? 30 : 0)
+ (hq_country in target list ? 15 : 0)
+ marketability_score * 0.15

Cost at 10,000 rows

LeadOcean. 10,000 companies from search is 10,000 records. Counting is free. Free holds 1,000 records for life at 5 requests a second. Solo is $97 a month and Agency is $497 a month, with a fair-use pace and no per-record price (LeadOcean pricing).

Clay. The CSV route spends no HTTP calls. The optional enrich column uses one Action per row, so 10,000 rows is 10,000 Actions. Growth includes 40,000 Actions a month and costs $495 a month billed monthly, or $446 billed yearly (Clay pricing, September 2026). Launch and Free have no HTTP API column. Table rows cap at 50,000 on Launch and Growth (Clay docs, September 2026).

FAQ

Where does the technology data come from?

LeadOcean detects technologies on company websites. Coverage is about 7.8M crawled sites, so a company with no crawled site has no technology signal (LeadOcean docs, September 2026).

Do I need Clay for this?

No. Steps 1 to 3 and a spreadsheet formula give you the same score. Clay adds the table and the next enrichment steps. For the method behind scoring, see firmographic and technographic data combined.

Can I score on funding?

Yes. fundingType and minLastFundingYear are company search filters. Size the list without them, then add them at search time.

Do I need a card to try it?

No. The free plan needs no card and gives 1,000 records for life, with every feature.
