You get a repeatable pass over your CRM accounts. HG Insights supplies the corporate hierarchy, meaning which parent owns which subsidiary. LeadOcean supplies the company record under it: domain, size and industry. Clay publishes a template that cleans CRM companies with HG Insights hierarchy data (Clay template, September 2026). This recipe follows that shape. It adds a free sizing step and a LeadOcean fill.
LeadOcean is not a hierarchy source. Its company schema has no parent or ultimate-parent field (LeadOcean docs, October 2026).
How it works
- Export the accounts. Pull company name and website domain from your CRM. Drop rows with no domain first.
- Dedupe on domain. Two CRM records with one domain are usually a subsidiary and its parent entered twice. See CRM data hygiene.
- Pull the hierarchy. Add Clay's "Find company corporate structure with HG Insights" action. It returns group headquarters, corporate parents and domestic parents. Clay runs it on Clay Credits or your own HG Insights account (Clay integrations, October 2026).
- Fill the company record. Call
POST /v1/companies/enrichwith each domain. It returns the company profile so size and industry match across parent and child. - Write back. Update the CRM company with the parent name, parent domain and LeadOcean fields. Map the parent to a lookup, not free text.
- Test on 25 rows, check five by hand, then run the full list.
Configuration
One request per domain. Acme and acme.com are placeholders.
curl -X POST "https://api.leadocean.io/v1/companies/enrich" \
-H "x-api-key: $LEADOCEAN_API_KEY" \
-H "content-type: application/json" \
-d '{"domain":"acme.com"}'Size the list before you spend anything. GET /v1/companies/count is free and takes the company-search filters (LeadOcean docs, September 2026).
curl "https://api.leadocean.io/v1/companies/count" \
-H "x-api-key: $LEADOCEAN_API_KEY"Field mapping
| LeadOcean field | CRM target field | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Domain you sent | Company domain | Your match key. Never overwrite it with a guess. |
| Company name | Company name | Set only when the CRM name is empty or a duplicate. |
| Industry | Industry | One value per company, same for parent and child. |
| Employee count | Number of employees | Overwrite stale values. Keep the source and date. |
| Not returned | Parent company | Take this from the HG Insights step. LeadOcean has no parent field. |
Cost at 10,000 rows
LeadOcean charges one record per company lookup, so 10,000 domains is 10,000 records (LeadOcean docs, September 2026). The Free plan holds 1,000 records for life, so it covers a 1,000-row test, not the full run. Solo is $97 a month with a pace of 10k enrichments every 5 hours, so one window covers it. Agency is $497 a month for teams.
The Clay side needs a plan that fits the table. Clay Growth lists at $495 a month billed monthly and $446 billed yearly (Clay pricing, September 2026). The HG Insights action runs on Clay Credits or your own HG Insights account. Clay's integration page gives no per-row credit figure, so run 25 rows and read the cost in the table before the full list (Clay integrations, October 2026).
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Many rows come back empty | The CRM has no domain, or a personal-domain value | Clean the domain column first and skip free-mail domains. |
| A subsidiary shows as its own parent | Two records share one domain | Dedupe on domain, then re-run the hierarchy step. |
| 404 on a lookup | LeadOcean holds nothing for that domain | Costs nothing. Keep the CRM value and flag the row. |
| 429 error | Above your plan's request rate | Slow the table. Free allows 5 requests a second, Solo 50. |
FAQ
Does LeadOcean replace HG Insights for parent company data?
No. HG Insights is the hierarchy source. LeadOcean fills the company record: domain, headcount, industry and revenue where held.
Can I run this without Clay?
Yes. Any script or CRM workflow that can make an HTTP call can run POST /v1/companies/enrich. The hierarchy step still needs HG Insights, through Clay or your own HG Insights account.
How do I size the list before paying?
Call GET /v1/companies/count or the leadocean_count_companies MCP tool. Both are free.
What does a miss cost?
Nothing. A lookup that finds no company is a 404 and costs no record.
