You get a Clay table where each prospect has a current title, past employers and email status, plus a line about the company's customers. An AI column turns those into a short email. Clay's own template enriches the list, then uses AI and Google to find the company's mission, ICP and customers (Clay template, September 2026). This recipe replaces the first step with one LeadOcean call.
LeadOcean covers the person. It does not hold a company's customer list. That part still comes from the company's own site, through Clay.
How it works
- Get a free key. Sign up at app.leadocean.io/register. No card, 1,000 records.
- Import your prospects. Use a CSV with a LinkedIn URL or work email per row.
- Add the HTTP API column. POST to
https://api.leadocean.io/v1/people/enrich. Clay lists this column on Growth and Enterprise (Clay pricing, September 2026). - Skip rows already filled. The column accepts an "only run if" formula (Clay docs, September 2026).
- Find the customer line. Add a Use AI column set to web research that reads the company site for its customers. Clay lists customer-list research as a Use AI task (Clay docs, October 2026).
- Draft the email. An AI column gets the title, one past employer and the customer line. Send from your own inbox or sequencer, because LeadOcean has none.
Configuration
/LinkedIn URL is Clay's reference to the prospect's profile column.
Method: POST
URL: https://api.leadocean.io/v1/people/enrich
Headers: x-api-key: <your LeadOcean key>
content-type: application/json
Body: {
"linkedin_url": "/LinkedIn URL",
"reveal_email": true
}
Field paths to return:
data.profile_data.profile_full_name
data.contact_data.contact_current_experiences
data.contact_data.email_status
data.resume_data.experiencesTest one row in a terminal first.
curl -X POST "https://api.leadocean.io/v1/people/enrich" \
-H "x-api-key: $LEADOCEAN_API_KEY" \
-H "content-type: application/json" \
-d '{"linkedin_url":"https://www.linkedin.com/in/jane-doe-example","reveal_email":true}'Send exactly one identifier per call.
Field mapping
| LeadOcean field | Clay column | Note |
|---|---|---|
data.profile_data.profile_full_name | Full name | Use it in the greeting. |
data.contact_data.contact_current_experiences | Current role | Holds the job title and company name. |
data.contact_data.email_status | Email status | Read it before you send. |
data.resume_data.experiences | Past roles | A hook such as a former employer. Past employers carry no company_id yet. |
Cost at 10,000 rows
LeadOcean is $0 for the first 1,000 records, then $97 a month on Solo, or $497 on Agency. Paid plans have a fair-use pace, not credits, so there is no per-record price.
A hit counts one record. A person we hold nothing for returns a 404 and costs nothing (LeadOcean docs, October 2026).
Clay's HTTP API column starts on Growth at $495 a month billed monthly, or $446 billed yearly. Each call uses one Action, and the entry Growth tier includes 40,000 Actions and 6,000 Data Credits a month (Clay pricing, September 2026). The HTTP column, the research column and the draft column use 30,000 Actions at 10,000 rows, one per run each (Clay docs, October 2026).
Credits are the larger cost. Web research costs 1 Data Credit a row on Clay's Helium model and a draft 0.4 on GPT-5 Mini (Clay docs, October 2026). That is about 14,000 credits, past the 6,000 in entry Growth. The 20,000-credit tier brings Growth to $205 + $880 = $1,085 a month billed monthly (Clay pricing, September 2026). Your own model key removes the credit cost but still uses the Action.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No HTTP API column | Clay Free or Launch plan | The column starts on Growth. Enrich a CSV export from LeadOcean instead. |
| 401 on every row | Wrong header | Use x-api-key, not Authorization. |
| 404 on a row | Nothing held for that profile | Expected and free. Skip the row or draft from the company line alone. |
| 400 on a row | Two identifiers, or a blank cell | Send one field and skip empty cells. |
| 402 mid-run | The 1,000 free records are spent | Move to Solo or Agency. |
| 429 errors | Over 5 requests a second on Free | Lower the column rate limit and honor Retry-After. |
