Most "top lead generation companies in the USA" lists are paid placements. A shortlist built from company data is more honest and takes half an hour.
This guide builds that list with the LeadOcean API, sizes the market for free, and sets a success test you can hold any vendor to.
TL;DR
- Pull US companies that describe themselves as lead generation providers, filter by size and state, and shortlist from real records.
- It takes about 30 minutes and spends 25 to 125 LeadOcean records. Count calls cost nothing.
- Write the success test first: cost per meeting, reply rate and email_status mix. Make every vendor agree to it in the contract.
Prerequisites
- A LeadOcean account on the Free plan: 1,000 records for life, no card, 5 requests a second.
- An API key in your shell:
export LEADOCEAN_API_KEY=... curlandjq. Nothing else.- A written one-line ideal customer profile. Without it, no vendor can be judged.
Step 1: Define what you are buying
A lead generation company sells one of three things. Pick before you search.
| Model | You pay for | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| List building | Contacts delivered | Stale or unverified emails |
| Outbound as a service | Sent campaigns and booked meetings | Your brand in someone else's sequences |
| Demand generation | Content, ads, inbound form fills | Slow, hard to attribute |
If you already have sales reps, buy list building and keep sending in-house. You control the domain reputation and the copy.
If you have no reps, outbound as a service fits. Demand generation only pays off over six months or more.
Step 2: Size the vendor market for free
Count US lead generation companies before pulling a single record. GET /v1/companies/count is free and takes the company-search filters.
curl -s -X POST https://api.leadocean.io/v1/companies/count \
-H "x-api-key: $LEADOCEAN_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"hqCountry": ["US"],
"employeeRange": ["51-200", "201-500"],
"keywords": ["lead generation"]
}' | jq '.data.total, .data.facets.hq_state[:5]'The same count through the MCP tool leadocean_count_companies returned this on 2026-10-21:
{
"total": 958,
"totalIsExact": true,
"facets": {
"industry": [
{"value": "Advertising Services", "count": 239},
{"value": "Marketing Services", "count": 83},
{"value": "Software Development", "count": 51}
],
"hq_state": [
{"value": "California", "count": 204},
{"value": "Florida", "count": 81},
{"value": "New York", "count": 80},
{"value": "Texas", "count": 79}
]
},
"credits": 0
}958 companies is too many to call. It also shows that "lead generation" in a company description is not the same as being an agency: software firms and real estate brokers use the phrase too. Step 3 narrows it.
The state facet also tells you where the supply sits. California holds 204 of the 958, with Florida, New York and Texas close behind. If your buyers are in Ohio, a coastal agency still works, but ask how it handles regional targeting.
Step 3: Pull a shortlist of real records
Narrow by industry and state, then page 25 records. Industry values are exact strings. Check them with GET /v1/enums/industry or leadocean_list_enum_values first.
curl -s -X POST https://api.leadocean.io/v1/companies/search \
-H "x-api-key: $LEADOCEAN_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"hqCountry": ["US"],
"industry": ["Marketing Services", "Advertising Services"],
"keywords": ["lead generation", "appointment setting"],
"employeeRange": ["11-50", "51-200"],
"hasMailableContacts": true,
"limit": 25
}' | jq -r '.data[].company_data | [.company_name, .company_domain] | @tsv'This spends one record per company returned, so 25 records. To page further, pass the cursor from meta.nextCursor. One search pages to 10,000 rows, which you will not need here.
Keep hasMailableContacts on. It drops companies with nobody you can reach, so every shortlist row can be contacted.
Step 4: Find who to call at each shortlisted firm
You want the founder or head of sales, not the generic inbox. GET /v1/companies/{domain}/people lists people at a domain. Acme is a placeholder.
curl -s "https://api.leadocean.io/v1/companies/acme.com/people?limit=10" \
-H "x-api-key: $LEADOCEAN_API_KEY" | jq '.data | length'Or search across the whole shortlist by title:
curl -s -X POST https://api.leadocean.io/v1/people/search \
-H "x-api-key: $LEADOCEAN_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"domain": ["acme.com"],
"seniority": ["founder", "owner", "c_suite", "vp"],
"limit": 10
}'Ten people at ten firms costs 100 records at most. You will rarely need that many.
Step 5: Run the vendor test
Do not rely on a case study. Ask each shortlisted firm for a paid pilot on a list you chose. Two rules:
- You supply the ICP and size the list yourself with a free count, so the vendor cannot pad it.
- The contract names the success metrics before work starts.
Ask every vendor the same five questions before the pilot:
- Where does the contact data come from, and when was each record last fetched?
- Which email_status values do you send to, and which do you drop?
- Who owns the sending domains and mailboxes?
- What does a held meeting mean in your contract?
- Can I export every sent email and reply?
Vendors who answer in specifics are rare. That alone cuts a shortlist of ten to three.
Size your own target list the same way you sized vendors. This count covers mailable US sales VPs and C-level leaders at lead generation firms of 51 to 500 people.
{
"country": ["US"],
"jobLevel": ["C-Team", "VP"],
"jobFunction": ["Sales & Business Development"],
"employeeRange": ["51-200", "201-500"],
"companyKeywords": ["lead generation"]
}On 2026-10-21 leadocean_count_leads returned 354 people with a mailable email (verified, catch_all_valid or catch_all). They work at 108 companies. Without the email condition the same filters match 1,092. Label counts that way. A vendor who quotes 1,092 as "contacts" is quoting the unfiltered total.
If the budget allows, run two pilots side by side. One vendor builds lists only and you send. The other runs the whole outbound motion. After 30 days the cost per held meeting shows which model fits your sales cycle.
Step 6: Score and measure success
Score each vendor on the same six lines, then track the same numbers monthly.
| Measure | How to read it | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| Email status mix | Share of verified vs catch_all vs unknown in what they deliver | Will not show email_status |
| Bounce rate | Hard bounces over sent | Above the level your sending tool warns on |
| Reply rate | Replies over delivered | No reply data shared |
| Cost per meeting | Fee over meetings that happened | Counts booked, not held |
| Data ownership | Who owns the list and domains at exit | List stays with the vendor |
| Reporting | Raw campaign export, not slides | Dashboard only |
Keep the first pilot to 30 to 60 days. A vendor that cannot show email_status per contact is selling you data you cannot check. LeadOcean returns email_status on every record, so you can audit any list yourself. See predictive lead generation for scoring who to target first.
What you get
A shortlist of 25 US firms with domain, headcount band, state and industry, plus a named decision maker for each. The response shape from the API reference, with placeholder values:
{
"success": true,
"data": [
{
"company_data": {
"company_name": "Acme Growth",
"company_domain": "acme.com"
},
"meta": { "fetched_at": "2026-10-01" }
}
],
"meta": {
"count": 25,
"nextCursor": "NEXT_CURSOR"
}
}Response shape from the API reference. Field values are placeholders, and the full company record carries more fields under company_data.
Troubleshooting
| Error | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 401 | Missing or wrong x-api-key header | Check $LEADOCEAN_API_KEY is exported and sent in the header |
| 429 | Above the plan's rate limit (5 a second on Free, 200 on Agency) | Honour Retry-After, or batch the calls |
| 402 | The 1,000 free records are spent | Add a paid plan, see pricing |
| Empty results | An industry or country value is not an exact enum string | Resolve it with GET /v1/enums/industry first |
| Count looks too round | A filter the count does not support was passed | Drop funding, revenue and HQ city or state filters from people counts |
| Search stops paging | meta.depthCapped is true at 10,000 rows | Narrow the filters and run smaller searches |
FAQ
Should I hire a US-based lead generation company?
Only if time zone, language or legal comfort matters for your buyers. Location does not predict quality. Judge on the scorecard in Step 6, not the office address.
How much do US B2B lead generation companies charge?
Pricing varies by model and is rarely public. We do not quote vendor rates here. Ask for a written fee per delivered contact or per held meeting, and compare on that basis.
Can I skip the agency and do this in-house?
Often yes. If you have reps, a data API and a sequencer cover list building. The contractors guide and the partner selection guide cover when outsourcing still wins.
How many records does the whole exercise cost?
About 25 to 125 on the free plan. The free plan gives 1,000 records for life, and counts, filters and enum lookups cost nothing.
Does LeadOcean replace a lead generation company?
No. LeadOcean is a data API with a hosted MCP server and an Exports page in the app. It has no sequencer, dialer or CRM. It gives you the list and the audit trail.
