A B2B database is a searchable set of company and contact records you buy access to, by seat, by credit or by API. For New Zealand it has to cover a small market well, and most vendors do not say how well.
New Zealand has few companies and many of them are tiny. Global tools list a national total, if at all, and the Kiwi share is a rounding error inside it. So the real limits are seat pricing, credit caps and API access, not the headline record count. Seat-priced tools like Apollo and Lusha cost more per record as you scale. Quote-only tools like Cognism and ZoomInfo hide the price. This guide ranks seven tools on NZ coverage you can check, API and MCP access, rate limits and the cost of 1M records a month. Only People Data Labs prints an NZ-only figure, and it counts profiles, not mailable people.
TL;DR
| Tool | Best for | Starting price | Cost at 1M records a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| LeadOcean | API, agents and volume | Free; Solo $97 a month | Agency $497 a month, fair-use pace |
| Apollo | Sales teams who want a UI | Free; Basic $65 per seat a month | $24,750 a month on monthly list; $19,600 billed yearly |
| ZoomInfo | Enterprise buyers with budget | Free credits; $0.45 a credit at the base tier | No public 1M price |
| Cognism | Phone-verified mobile data | Quote only | No public 1M price |
| Lusha | Small teams enriching in-browser | Free; Starter $49.90 a month | No public 1M price |
| People Data Labs | Developers building on person data | Free; Pro $98 a month | No public 1M price |
| Crustdata | Signals and watchers | No public dollar price | No public 1M price |
Prices are USD list prices, monthly billing first, billed-yearly after. Each is sourced below, checked September 2026.
What we evaluated
- NZ coverage you can verify. A free count or search for New Zealand, not a global total.
- API and MCP. A documented API, an official MCP server, and what each costs per call.
- Rate limits. Requests per second or minute on the plan you would actually buy.
- Price at volume. The list price of 1M records a month, or a plain statement that none is published.
- Email and phone access. What you pay extra for, and whether a miss is billed.
Our NZ count
We ran the same check on LeadOcean on 21 October 2026, using the free count tools (leadocean_count_leads and leadocean_count_companies). Counts spend no records.
| Filter | Count | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| People, country NZ, mailable | 320,690 | Best email is verified, catch_all_valid or catch_all |
| People, country NZ, no email filter | 1,840,971 | Everyone with an NZ location |
| People, NZ, C-Team, VP or Director, mailable | 51,324 | Across 21,213 employers |
| Companies, HQ in NZ | 119,264 | 74,305 of them have 1-10 staff |
The company list is dominated by small firms. Construction (5,642), retail (5,178) and IT services (3,248) lead by number of companies. We ran no count on the other six vendors, so we do not compare totals. Run the same search on their free tiers before you buy.
1. LeadOcean: best for API, agent and volume buyers
LeadOcean is an API and MCP data source with 693M people, 366M with email and 67M companies. You can size New Zealand for free, filter by country or hqCountry, and pull results over the API or from an agent. The NZ counts above are the proof, not a vendor total.
Pull people with POST /v1/people/search and enrich a known person with POST /v1/people/enrich. The MCP server at https://api.leadocean.io/mcp has 13 tools and signs in with OAuth 2.1, so there is no key to paste. Counts, filter lists and leadocean_count_companies are free. A person we hold nothing for is a free 404.
It is not a rep workspace. There is no sequencer, dialer, CRM or Chrome extension. The app at app.leadocean.io has an Exports page with a filter builder, a column picker, a price preview and a CSV download.
Pros
- Free NZ sizing with exact totals before you spend a record.
- 5 requests a second on Free, 50 on Solo, 200 on Agency.
- Official MCP server with 13 tools; free tier includes API and MCP.
- Paid plans use a fair-use pace, not credits, so there is no per-record invoice.
Cons
- No in-app outreach tools.
- Bulk CSV export is not on Free.
- Most NZ-headquartered companies have 1-10 staff, so enterprise lists are short.
Best for: developers, RevOps teams and agencies who pull NZ data by API or through an agent.
Pricing: Free $0 (1,000 records for life, no card). Solo $97 a month. Agency $497 a month. Platform $1,997 a month. LeadOcean pricing, October 2026.
2. Apollo: best for sales teams who want a UI

Apollo is the default pick for a rep who wants search, sequences and a dialer in one tool. Every plan includes API access, and Apollo runs an official MCP server at https://mcp.apollo.io/mcp on any plan, including Free. See the full Apollo alternatives page for the long version.
Credits are the catch. An email costs 1 credit, a phone number costs 8, and credits expire at the end of each billing cycle. Credits are pooled per seat, so volume means more seats. API rate limits are per team and per endpoint: paid search is 200 a minute, 6,000 an hour and 50,000 a day (Apollo rate limits, September 2026).
Pros
- Search, outreach and a dialer in one product.
- API and official MCP on every plan, Free included.
- Clear public list prices from $0 to $149 per seat.
Cons
- Credits expire each cycle and do not roll over.
- 1M emails a month means hundreds of seats at list price.
- Add-on credit prices are not public.
Best for: NZ sales teams who live in a rep workspace and enrich in the UI.
Pricing: Per seat a month, USD, billed monthly: Free $0 (75 credits), Basic $65, Professional $99, Organization $149. Billed yearly: Basic $49, Professional $79, Organization $119. At 1M work emails a month that is $24,750 on monthly Professional list, or $19,600 a month equivalent billed yearly on Basic. Apollo pricing, September 2026.
3. ZoomInfo: best for enterprise teams with a budget
ZoomInfo sells two ways. The classic platform is quote-only and its pricing page sits behind a bot check. GTM AI, the self-serve route, sells data credits pay as you go. Search, lookup and find similar are free. See ZoomInfo alternatives.
One data credit enriches or exports one company, contact or intent record, charged once per 12 months. Free signup gives 1,000 data credits, API, MCP and 5 requests a second. ZoomInfo has an official MCP server that works with Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor (GTM AI MCP docs, September 2026).
Pros
- Search and lookup are free; you pay only on enrich or export.
- A record is charged once per 12 months.
- Free tier includes API and MCP with 1,000 data credits.
Cons
- The public slider stops at 100,000 credits for $25,000. Larger volume is Enterprise.
- Platform plan prices are not readable without a sales call.
- Rate limits step up by package, from 5 to 35 requests a second.
Best for: enterprise buyers who already budget for a data platform and want one vendor.
Pricing: GTM AI credits pay as you go from $20. List price per credit runs $0.45 at 100 credits down to $0.25 at 100,000 ($25,000). No public 1M price. GTM AI pricing, September 2026.
4. Cognism: best for phone-verified mobile data

Cognism sells sales prospecting on Standard and Pro plans with 5 seats each, plus Enrich and a Data-as-a-Service route. It publishes no dollar price. Its pitch is phone-verified mobiles with Do Not Call cross-referencing in 15 territories (Cognism Diamond Data, September 2026). Read the Cognism alternatives page.
The API uses OAuth 2.0 client credentials and allows 500 requests a minute per account, per operation. The MCP server at https://mcp.cognism.com/mcp has 15 tools (Cognism MCP docs, September 2026). One credit is one revealed contact, and company searches never use credits.
Pros
- Phone-verified mobile focus.
- Official API and a 15-tool MCP server on the same credits.
- Re-viewing a revealed contact is free.
Cons
- No public price for any plan, seat or credit.
- API and MCP need a package that includes them.
- Docs disagree on whether count calls are free.
Best for: teams that care about mobile numbers and accept a sales call to price it.
Pricing: Quote only; no public price at 1M. Cognism pricing, September 2026.
5. Lusha: best for small teams enriching in the browser

Lusha is a browser-first contact tool. Every plan has an API, Free included, and the MCP server at https://mcp.lusha.com has 50 tools. It suits a small team that enriches a few hundred contacts a month. See Lusha alternatives.
An email costs 1 credit and a phone number 5. Through one API request, email plus phone is up to 7 credits. Bulk requests take up to 100 contacts and charge 1 credit per 25 results on top of data credits (Lusha API guide, September 2026).
Pros
- API key on every plan, Free included.
- Large MCP server (50 tools) that shares the API credit pool.
- Transparent credit steps on the pricing page.
Cons
- Per-key rate limits are low: Pro is 50 a minute and 1,500 a day.
- The largest public tier is 10,000 credits a month.
- Docs disagree on whether a no-match request is charged.
Best for: small teams that want a lightweight enrichment tool with an API.
Pricing: Free $0 (40 credits). Starter $49.90 a month ($37.45 billed yearly). Pro $69.90 ($52.45 yearly). Premium $399.90 ($299.95 yearly). No public 1M price. Lusha pricing, September 2026.
6. People Data Labs: best for developers building on person data

People Data Labs (PDL) is a developer data API with a large person dataset and no seat model. It reports 2,466,510,427 person profiles and 76,606,079 company records on its own dataset pages (PDL datasets, September 2026). Its country table lists 2,528,122 profiles in New Zealand, with some duplication (PDL country stats, October 2026). See People Data Labs alternatives.
One credit is used per successful match, and a 404 is not billed. Person Enrichment allows 1,000 requests a minute on paid plans, but Person Search is limited to 10 a minute by default. PDL has no official MCP server.
Pros
- Pure API, no seats and no UI to pay for.
- Misses are not billed.
- Very large global dataset on PDL's own stats.
Cons

7. Crustdata: best for signals and watchers

Crustdata sells search, enrichment and change watchers on a credit model. A hosted MCP server at https://install.crustdata.com/mcp supports OAuth sign-in and API-key bearer tokens. See Crustdata alternatives.
Search costs 0.03 credits per result. A work-email lookup through /person/enrich costs 2 credits on a self-serve key. The cheaper contact endpoint needs an enterprise plan. Default rate limits are low: 15 a minute on enrich, 30 on search (Crustdata docs, September 2026).
Pros
- Watchers track changed people and companies.
- Hosted MCP with OAuth and API-key options.
- Search is priced per result.

Pricing: No public dollar price. A Crustdata blog post reports a $95 a month entry tier, which the pricing page does not list. Crustdata pricing, September 2026.

Verdict
For API, agent and volume work, LeadOcean wins. It is the only one here where we can show an NZ count and a flat price for the same query. Apollo wins for reps who need a UI and outreach. ZoomInfo and Cognism win if a quote and a sales process are fine. Lusha suits small teams. PDL suits developers who can live with 10 searches a minute. Crustdata suits signal tracking. Whatever you pick, run one NZ search on the free tier first.
FAQ
How many New Zealand contacts are there in LeadOcean?
On 21 October 2026 the count was 320,690 people in NZ with a verified, catch_all_valid or catch_all email. Without an email filter it was 1,840,971. The count is free and spends no records.
Does any vendor publish an NZ-only count?
Only People Data Labs, with 2,528,122 NZ profiles in its country table (October 2026). Profiles are not mailable people. The other five print none on the pages we read, so run an NZ search on each free tier before you commit.
What does 1M records a month cost?
LeadOcean Agency is $497 a month on a fair-use pace. Apollo is about $24,750 a month at monthly list price. The other five publish no 1M price, so ask for a quote.
Which of these has an MCP server?
LeadOcean (13 tools), Apollo, ZoomInfo, Cognism (15 tools), Lusha (50 tools) and Crustdata. People Data Labs has no official MCP server.
Is the free plan enough to test New Zealand?
LeadOcean Free gives 1,000 records for life with the whole database and API. That is enough to enrich a test list of a few hundred Kiwi contacts and see the email status mix. Counts are free on top of that.
Why do NZ lists look so small-business heavy?
74,305 of the 119,264 NZ-headquartered companies in LeadOcean have 1-10 staff (21 October 2026). Expect many owner-operators and few large enterprises.
