What Is a Disposable Email Address?

A throwaway inbox that expires, why it has no place on an outbound list, and where LeadOcean marks it.

A disposable email address is a temporary inbox, created in seconds and abandoned after a short time, that a person uses so they never have to give out a real address.

It looks like any other address, with a name before the @ and a domain after it. The difference is the domain. It belongs to a service that hands out inboxes to anyone, often with no sign-up, and deletes them after minutes, hours or days.

Why it matters for outbound

A disposable address is not a buyer. It belongs to a person who wanted a download or a coupon and did not want the follow-up.

Mail sent there either bounces once the inbox expires or lands in a box nobody reads. Bounces cost you sender reputation, and the reply rate on these addresses is zero. Remove them before a send, and from any list you buy.

They usually enter a list through forms. Whatever the source, check the status field instead of assuming.

Example

A visitor fills a gated form on acme.com. The list now holds two rows:

code
jane.doe@acme.com work address, domain owned by the company
x7k2q9@tempbox.example disposable address, domain offers public inboxes

The first row ties to a person at a company. The second ties to nobody. The domain tempbox.example is a placeholder for any provider that gives out inboxes freely.

Spotting the second row takes a lookup, not a syntax check. The address is well formed, and the mail server accepts it until the inbox is deleted. Detection needs a maintained list of such domains and a verifier that checks against it. Domains change often, so a list that was right last year misses new providers.

In LeadOcean data

LeadOcean marks these addresses with the disposable value of email_status. It is one of 13 values, labelled "Disposable address" in the API, and the spec lists it under "Do not send" next to invalid, spam_trap and abuse (openapi.json, September 2026).

You can filter on it with emailStatus on /v1/people/search, so you can find the rows to exclude. The default count_leads MCP tool count covers only verified, catch_all_valid and catch_all, so disposable addresses are not in it.

The v2 email endpoints (/v2/people/email/work and /v2/people/email/personal) never return a disposable address. Read email_status on every search row before you send. Plans are on /pricing.
