Email list churn is the share of addresses on a list that stop being valid or reachable over a given period, because people change jobs, mailboxes close or domains lapse.
Churn is a rate. Count the addresses that went bad and divide by the size of the list at the start. Measure it per month or per quarter so lists of different ages can be compared.
Why it matters for outbound
Churn decides how old a list can get before it is unsafe to send. Every dead address is a hard bounce, and a run of hard bounces damages the sending domain for every later campaign.
It also hides in plain sight. Last quarter's bounce rate says nothing about this quarter if nobody rechecked the list.
The fix is to measure it on your own sends, then set a re-check interval from the result. See list verification cadence for how often to re-verify.
Example
You export 1,000 contacts in January. All of them are verified on the day of the pull.
In April you re-verify the same file. 40 addresses now come back invalid: Jane Doe left Acme (acme.com) and her mailbox is closed, and 39 others are gone for similar reasons.
Churn for the quarter is 40 / 1,000 = 4%. That is about 1.3% a month. Sending to the stale file would have produced roughly 40 hard bounces. Re-verifying first removes them from the send.
The numbers above are made up to show the arithmetic. Your rate depends on your audience and how the list was built.
In LeadOcean data
LeadOcean does not report a churn rate. It gives you the fields to calculate your own.
email_statuson each search row, and thestatusof each address in an enriched record. Values include verified, catch_all_valid, catch_all, risky, unknown, untested and invalid. It is also theemailStatusfilter on/v1/people/search(openapi.json, September 2026).fetched_aton each record shows when it was last fetched. The dataset itself is refreshed monthly.verified_batch_dateon each address, for example in/v2/people/email/workresults, is the date of the verification run that confirmed it.
To measure churn, store email_status when you pull a list. Pull the same people again later with POST /v1/people/enrich and person_id, then count how many moved to invalid. A person LeadOcean holds nothing for returns a 404 and costs nothing.
LeadOcean does not refund bounced emails, so read email_status before every send. The count_leads MCP tool is free and counts verified, catch_all_valid and catch_all people by default, which sizes a segment before you pull it. Plans are on /pricing.
