What Is B2B Data Erosion?

Why a contact list gets worse the day after you buy it, and which fields tell you how far it has slipped.

B2B data erosion is the gradual loss of accuracy in business contact records as people change jobs, companies rebrand or close, and mailboxes get shut down.

No one has to make a mistake for it to happen. The record was right when it was collected. The world moved and the record did not.

Why it matters for outbound

Erosion turns a good list into a bounce generator. A dead mailbox returns a hard bounce, and a run of hard bounces damages the sending domain for every later campaign.

It also wastes the part of outbound that costs the most: rep time. A sequence that reaches a former employee gets no reply, and the real owner of the role never sees it.

The fix is not a bigger list. It is a fresher one, plus a check before each send. Treat the date a record was fetched as part of the record.

Example

You export 1,000 contacts in January. One of them is Jane Doe, VP of Sales at Acme (acme.com), jane.doe@acme.com.

In April you send a sequence. Jane left Acme in March, and Acme closed her mailbox. The message hard bounces. Her replacement, John Roe, is in the same role and never hears from you.

Multiply that by every move in the list. The January export was accurate on the day you pulled it, and by April part of it is wrong. Nothing in the file warns you, because a CSV carries no sense of age unless a date column says so.

In LeadOcean data

LeadOcean refreshes the dataset monthly. Each record also carries its own fetched_at date, so you can see how old the record is before you act on it.

For email, read email_status on each search row, or the status of each address in an enriched record. It is also the emailStatus filter on /v1/people/search. Values include verified, catch_all_valid, catch_all, risky, unknown, untested and invalid (openapi.json, September 2026).

Each address also carries verified_batch_date, the date of the verification run that confirmed it, for example on /v2/people/email/work results. A whole batch shares one date, so read it as "checked by" and not "checked today".

To refresh an old row, call POST /v1/people/enrich with person_id and compare it with what you hold. A person LeadOcean holds nothing for returns a 404 and costs nothing. LeadOcean does not refund bounced emails, so check email_status before you send.

To size a segment before you pull it, the count_leads MCP tool is free. It counts verified, catch_all_valid and catch_all people by default. Plans are on /pricing.
