A buying signal is an observable event or behavior that suggests a person or company is more likely to buy a product soon.

Signals come in two kinds. Company events include a funding round, a new executive hire or a headcount jump. Behavior includes pricing-page visits, content downloads or a reply that mentions a competitor. For more on spotting and acting on them, read how to identify and act on buying signals.

Why it matters for outbound

A signal tells you who to contact this week instead of this quarter. Sellers who write to an account right after a relevant event have a reason to write that the prospect can see.

Without a signal, outbound is a list sorted by firmographics, and every account looks equally ready. With one, you rank the list by timing and put your best copy where the odds are highest.

Using signals in outreachHow to use buying signals for B2B outreach

Example

You sell sales tooling to funded software companies. Your list holds 400 accounts, and you can only work 40 a week.

CompanySignalDatePriority
AcmeRaised a round, hiring 5 sales rolesThis monthHigh
GlobexNo change in 12 monthsn/aLow

Acme goes to the top because two signals point at the same need: new money and a sales team to equip. Globex stays in the queue. Names and values are placeholders. The prompt page detect B2B buying signals shows how to ask an AI assistant to flag these.

In LeadOcean data

LeadOcean holds profile and company attributes, not live behavior. It has no filter for intent data, web visits or email opens, and the dataset is refreshed monthly. Treat its fields as slow signals that narrow a list.

  • minLastFundingYear and maxLastFundingYear limit companies by the year of their last funding round. Search with POST /v1/companies/search or the MCP tool search_companies.
  • technologies and technologyCategories match what is detected on a company website, which flags a tool a prospect already runs.
  • employeeRange, jobLevel and title find the buyer once the account is chosen.

Do not trust count_leads totals that use funding filters. Size those lists with a search call and count=true with limit set to 1. Each person or company returned counts as one record. The free plan gives 1,000 records, one-off, with no card. Pro is $499 a month. See /pricing.

Pair these filters with your own behavior data, such as site visits, to get a fast signal on top of a slow one.
