You choose the buyer, then you make the first contact.
Outbound lead generation is the practice of selecting target buyers yourself and contacting them first, by email, phone or social message, instead of waiting for them to find you.
Why it matters for outbound
Outbound is the only channel where you set the audience. Inbound depends on who finds your site. Outbound depends on whether you can name the right people and reach them.
That makes the list the main input. A sharp definition of the buyer, plus a working email or phone number for each person, sets the ceiling for your reply rate. Bad data wastes sends and hurts sender reputation.
Example
A seller of payments software wants to reach sales leaders at Canadian companies.
- Define the buyer: VPs in Sales & Business Development, based in Canada.
- Size the list before spending anything. On 2026-09-30 that filter (jobLevel VP, jobFunction Sales & Business Development, country CA) returned 5,066 mailable people, meaning verified, catch_all_valid or catch_all emails.
- Pull the rows, read each email status, and drop anything not mailable.
- Send a short, specific first email to Jane Doe at Acme and follow up on a set schedule.
- Track replies, then adjust the filter, not just the copy.
The loop is define, source, contact, measure. The sourcing step is where most teams lose time.
In LeadOcean data
