Persona-based marketing is tailoring messages, offers and channels to a specific buyer role, such as a VP of Marketing or an IT director, instead of one message for everyone.

A persona is a profile of a role: what it owns, what it is measured on and what it worries about. It is built from job title, seniority and function, not from a made-up character with a stock photo. Persona-based marketing sits one level below account-based marketing. ABM picks the company. Personas decide who inside it hears what.

Why it matters for outbound

Two people at the same company care about different problems, so one email cannot serve both. A VP of Marketing reads about pipeline and campaign cost. An IT VP reads about security review and integration time.

In outbound this changes the list before it changes the copy. You split contacts by role, write one angle per role and compare replies by persona. A persona that never replies tells you to change the angle or drop the role. Keep personas few. Two or three roles per account is enough to learn from.

Example

You sell an analytics tool to US enterprises. You define two personas and write one first line for each.

PersonaRole filterFirst line
Growth leadVP, marketing"Acme reports show which campaigns drive pipeline."
Platform ownerVP, IT"Acme connects to your warehouse without a new vendor review."

Both emails pitch the same product. Each one opens with the problem that role already tracks. Company names and lines are placeholders. Tag each contact with its persona so you can compare reply rates by role later. Start with the persona that owns the budget, then add the person who will use the product.

In LeadOcean data

LeadOcean has no persona field. It has the role attributes you build personas from, and you filter on them in POST /v1/people/search or the MCP tool search_leads.

  • jobFunction is the department, for example Advertising & Marketing or Information Technology.
  • jobLevel is the band: C-Team, VP, Director, Manager, Staff or Other. seniority is finer, with values such as c_suite, vp and director.
  • title matches job title keywords. Wrap a value in brackets for an exact match.

Counts below come from the free count_leads tool, run on 2 October 2026. They are mailable people (verified, catch_all_valid or catch_all) in the US with jobLevel VP.
