What Is Account-based Selling?

Account-based selling is a sales approach where a rep picks a named list of target accounts first, then works several people at each one with coordinated outreach, instead of chasing individual leads.

The account is the unit of work. A rep owns "Acme" as a whole, not one contact at Acme. Success is a meeting with the right buyer inside that company.

Why it matters for outbound

Most B2B deals involve more than one person. A single contact who replies is rarely the one who signs. Working the account means you already know who else to reach.

It also changes where data effort goes. You spend it on a short list of accounts, not on a huge list of loose contacts. That list needs firmographic fit up front and a contact roster behind each domain.

Marketing teams run the same idea as account-based marketing. Account-based selling is the sales-side version: the rep does the outreach, not an ad campaign. Many teams also trigger the first touch from signal-based selling, such as a hiring spike or a funding round.

Example

A rep sells payroll software to mid-size software companies. She builds a list of 40 target accounts. Acme is one of them.

For Acme she maps four roles and sends each a different message.

The contacts are placeholders. If Jane replies, the rep already has three other people to bring into the thread. The unit she tracks is "Acme: 2 of 4 engaged", not four separate leads.

In LeadOcean data

LeadOcean covers both halves of the workflow: the account list and the people inside each account (openapi.json, September 2026).

  • Build the account list with POST /v1/companies/search. Filters include industry, country, minEmployees and maxEmployees.
  • Pull the roster for one account with GET /v1/companies/{domain}/people, for example acme.com. It returns thin records, one record per person, and stops at 10,000 rows.
  • Narrow to the buying roles with /v1/people/search by jobLevel and job function. Then enrich a chosen person with POST /v1/people/enrich using person_id and reveal_email set to true.

The roster call does not include contact points. Enrich a person to get them, and read email_status before you send, because there is no refund for bounced emails.

An AI assistant can do the same through the hosted MCP server. Use search_companies for the account list and search_leads for the people. LeadOcean is data, not a rep workspace: it has no sequencer, CRM or dialer, so you run the outreach in your own tools. Free plan: 1,000 records, one-off, no card. Pro is $499 a month. See /pricing.

All of these sit in the glossary.
