A lead generation funnel is the sequence of stages a prospect passes through, from first contact to a qualified lead a seller can work.
Most funnels have four stages: a target audience, first contact, engagement and qualification. The shape narrows because each stage loses people: not everyone you target gets your email, not everyone who gets it replies, and not everyone who replies fits. For the wider picture, read lead generation or prospecting and browse the glossary.
Why it matters for outbound
In outbound, you build the top of the funnel yourself. Nobody arrives through a form, so the size and quality of your list set the ceiling for everything below it.
A funnel also tells you where to look when results drop. Low replies point at the message or the list. Few meetings from many replies point at qualification. Without stage counts, you guess. Track each stage weekly and compare it with the week before, not with a benchmark from another company.
One rule keeps the funnel honest: count the same unit at every stage. Count people, not companies, or the ratios stop meaning anything.
Example
You sell sales tooling to mid-size software companies. You track one week of outbound.
| Stage | What counts | Count |
|---|---|---|
| Audience | People matched and verified | 500 |
| First contact | Emails delivered | 480 |
| Engagement | Replies | 24 |
| Qualification | Meetings booked | 6 |
The weakest step is replies to meetings: 24 down to 6. Fixing the list would not help here. The call to action or the qualifying questions would. Every number above is a placeholder. Your own ratios will differ, and they only matter relative to your previous weeks.
In LeadOcean data
LeadOcean fills the audience stage and the contact data for first contact. It has no funnel, scoring, sequencer or CRM, so engagement and qualification stay in your own tools.
- Size the audience for free with the MCP tool
count_leads. On 2026-10-02, jobLevel VP, jobFunction Sales & Business Development, country US and employeeRange 51-200 returned 17,133 mailable people (verified, catch_all_valid or catch_all email). It spends no records. - Pull the people with
POST /v1/people/search, or the MCP toolsearch_leads. Each person returned counts as one record. - Fill gaps with
POST /v1/people/enrich, or write a CSV withPOST /v1/exports.
Run the count before you buy anything: if the audience is 300 people, no downstream fix will give you a full funnel. Free gives 1,000 records, one-off, with no card. Pro is $499 a month. See /pricing.
