A temporary email address is an inbox set up for a short, single purpose, such as one download or one sign-up, and then left to expire or be deleted.
People use one to avoid giving out a real address. Some services hand out a random inbox with no sign-up. Others let you create an alias that you switch off later. Either way, the address works for a while and then stops.
Most tools call these disposable addresses. The two terms mean the same thing in practice. See the disposable email address entry for the longer definition.
Why it matters for outbound
A temporary address is not a lead. The person gave it so you could not follow up.
Mail to it either bounces once the inbox is gone or sits unread. A bounce is a failure reported by the receiving server under SMTP, the protocol in RFC 5321 (September 2026). Too many of them damage your sender reputation, which slows delivery for every other message you send.
These addresses mostly enter a list through forms and sign-ups, not through B2B data vendors. A work record tied to a company rarely sits on a public inbox. You still need to check the status field instead of assuming.
Example
A visitor downloads a guide from acme.com and the form saves two rows:
jane.doe@acme.com domain belongs to the company
q8m4x1@tempbox.example domain gives out public inboxesBoth rows are well formed. The second one passes a syntax check and the mail server accepts the message until the inbox is deleted. The domain tempbox.example is a placeholder for any provider that gives inboxes to anyone.
Catching it needs a verifier and a maintained list of those domains. New providers appear often, so an old list misses them. A check that only reads the address text will not find the problem.
In LeadOcean data
LeadOcean has no field named temporary. The closest match is the disposable value of email_status, one of 13 values listed in openapi.json (September 2026). The docs group it under "Do not send" with invalid, spam_trap and abuse.
You can filter on it with emailStatus on /v1/people/search, to find the rows you want to exclude. The default count_leads MCP tool count covers only verified, catch_all_valid and catch_all, so disposable addresses are never in it.
Read email_status on every row before you send. Plans are on /pricing.
