A personable cold sales email is a short message that names one fact the reader would recognize, such as a past employer, a new role or a tool their company runs. Sales teams, founders and agencies need it because generic openers get ignored. The tools below do not write the email. They supply the facts the email hangs on, and the price of those facts decides how far you can scale.
Most people start with Apollo or ZoomInfo and hit the same walls. Apollo prices per seat with credits that expire (Apollo pricing, September 2026). Lusha charges 5 credits for a phone number (Lusha pricing, September 2026). If you are leaving one of them, see our Apollo alternative, Lusha alternative or ZoomInfo alternative pages.

What we evaluated
- Personal facts per record. Does it return something to write about: past roles, education, tools used, news? A bare email address is not a personal fact.
- Email quality. Does it tell you whether an address is safe to send to, so a bounce does not undo the effort?
- API and MCP access. Can a script or an AI agent pull the facts and fill a template without a person clicking?
- Rate limits. How many lookups a second or minute before you get a 429?
- Cost at 1M records a month. We use the published list price. If a vendor publishes none, we say "No public 1M price" and do not multiply a small rate out.
We did not run a send test or measure reply rates. We read each vendor's public pricing and docs in September 2026 (LeadOcean in October 2026). The sample openers below use placeholder names.
1. Clay: best for AI research on each prospect

Clay is a table where each row is a prospect and each column pulls or computes one fact. Its AI agent, Claygent, is on every plan, including Free (Clay pricing, September 2026). That makes it the strongest option when the personal line is something you must research, such as what a company announced last week.
The cost is in the model. Clay's own doc says a fully enriched record typically costs 6 to 20 Data Credits, plus one Action per enrichment (Clay docs, September 2026). The top self-serve tier is 200,000 Actions and 50,000 Data Credits a month, so a 1M-lookup month needs an Enterprise quote.
Sample opener: "Jane, I saw Acme announced a new warehouse in Ohio last week. Is routing between sites on your plate?"
Pros
- Research columns turn any public page into a merge field.
- Waterfall lookups across many sources in one table.
- API on every plan, including Free, and an MCP server (Clay MCP guide, October 2026).
- No Data Credits or Actions charged when an enrichment finds nothing.
Cons
- Cost scales with columns, not just rows.
- No public price at 1M records.
- Public API rate limit is not published (Clay docs, September 2026).
- Tables cap at 50,000 rows on Launch and Growth.
Best for: Small, high-value lists where each email deserves research. Pricing: Launch $185 a month billed monthly, $167 yearly. Growth $495 monthly, $446 yearly. Free is $0 with 100 Data Credits (Clay pricing, September 2026).
2. LeadOcean: best for career-history facts by API at volume
LeadOcean is a data layer: 693M people and 67M companies over REST and a hosted MCP server. Since October 2026, person enrich returns career history: past roles with dates, education, certifications and awards, each when held (LeadOcean API, October 2026). Past employers do not carry a company ID yet.
Those fields are the raw material for the most common personable opener: "I saw you came from Globex." Search with POST /v1/people/search, then call POST /v1/people/enrich with a person_id. Size the list first with leadocean_count_leads or GET /v1/companies/count, both free. The MCP server has 13 tools, so an agent can run the whole loop (LeadOcean MCP docs, October 2026).
LeadOcean does not write or send email. It has no sequencer, inbox or CRM. You bring the sending tool.
Sample opener: "Jane, I noticed you spent four years at Globex before Acme. Did the routing setup there carry over?"
Pros
- Career history, education and certifications in one enrich call.
- Flat price: Agency is $497 a month with a fair-use pace, not credits.
- 200 requests a second on Agency, 5 on Free.
- Free counts, so you size an audience before spending a record.
Cons
- Data only. No sequencer, dialer or Chrome extension.
- Career fields are present only when a profile holds them, so some rows come back empty.
- One search pages to 10,000 rows. Narrow filters to go deeper.
- Bulk CSV export is not on Free.
Best for: Developers, agencies and RevOps teams filling templates by API or agent. Pricing: Free $0 (1,000 records for life, no card), Solo $97 a month, Agency $497, Platform $1,997. See pricing (October 2026).
3. Apollo: best for reps who send from the same app

Apollo bundles a contact database with sequences, a dialer and a rep workspace. That is its edge here: the data and the send live together, so a rep can write a line and send it without a second tool.
The price is per seat. Professional is $99 a seat monthly with 4,000 credits, and an email costs 1 credit, a phone number 8 (Apollo docs, September 2026). Credits expire each cycle. At 1M work-email lookups that is 250 Professional seats, $24,750 a month at monthly list price, or $19,600 on yearly Basic seats.
Sample opener: "Jane, congrats on the Acme Series B. Teams at that stage often rebuild their outbound. Worth a look at how we do it?"
Pros
- Data, sequences and dialer in one login.
- API and an official MCP server on every plan, including Free.
- Enrichment endpoints allow 1,000 requests a minute on paid plans (Apollo API docs, September 2026).
- Clear credit costs per field.
Cons
- Per-seat pricing grows with headcount.
- Credits do not roll over, including add-ons.
- No public price for extra credits.
- Selection is capped per action: 1,000 on Basic, 10,000 on Organization.
Best for: Sales teams that want one app for data and sending. Pricing: Basic $65 per seat monthly, $49 yearly. Professional $99, $79. Organization $149, $119 with three seats minimum (Apollo pricing, September 2026).
4. ZoomInfo (GTM AI): best for pay-as-you-go company and intent records
ZoomInfo's GTM AI product sells data credits pay as you go from $20, with no contract and no seat fee. Search and lookup are free. One credit enriches one company, contact or intent record, and a record is charged once per 12 months (GTM AI pricing, September 2026).
That structure suits personable email because intent and company signals give you a reason to write now. The list rate runs from $0.45 a credit at 100 credits down by tier. The slider stops at 100,000 credits, so there is no public price at 1M. zoominfo.com/pricing blocked our read behind a human check, so we print no platform plan price.
Sample opener: "Jane, I saw Acme is hiring three SDRs. Are you rebuilding the outbound motion?"
Pros
- Free search and lookup, pay only to enrich.
- Free tier with 1,000 data credits and API, MCP and CLI access.
- Official MCP server for Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor.
- Re-enriching a record inside 12 months costs nothing extra.
Cons
- No public price at 1M records.
- Builder tier is 5 requests a second (GTM AI docs, September 2026).
- Batch enrichment takes at most 25 records a call.
- Platform pricing sits behind sales.
Best for: Teams that want intent and company signals without a platform contract. Pricing: Pay as you go from $20; $0.38 a credit at the $1,000 tier (GTM AI pricing, September 2026).
5. Hunter: best for finding and checking one email at a time
Hunter finds an email from a name and domain, then verifies it. It returns little about the person beyond the address, so the personal line must come from elsewhere. What it does well is make sure the personable email lands.
An email found costs 1 credit, a verification 0.5 credit, and nothing is charged when nothing is found (Hunter help, September 2026). One million Search credits on the Data Platform cost $6,900 as a one-off purchase (Hunter Data Platform, September 2026).
Sample opener: "Jane, I read Acme's note on the Ohio expansion. How are you handling carrier onboarding?" (line sourced elsewhere, address from Hunter)
Pros
- Cheap per lookup at the Data Platform rate.
- Verifier included.
- Official MCP server on all plans.
- Limits are published per endpoint: 15 requests a second on Finder and Domain Search.
Cons
- Little personal data beyond the email.
- Rate limits return 403, and quota limits return 429, which trips up retry code.
- Monthly credits do not carry over on monthly plans.
- Lookup starts at a name and domain.
Best for: Verifying addresses before a personalised send. Pricing: Starter $49 a month monthly, $34 yearly. Growth $149, $104. Scale $299, $209 (Hunter pricing, September 2026).
6. Lusha: best for quick contact lookups

Lusha is built for a rep who needs a phone number or email in a few clicks. It has an API on every plan and an MCP server with 50 tools (Lusha docs, September 2026).
Credits are the limit. An email costs 1 credit and a phone number 5. The top public tier is 10,000 credits a month, $977.40 billed monthly, so 1M lookups is 104 times the largest listed plan. We list no public 1M price. Lusha's own docs disagree on whether a no-match request costs a credit, so budget as if it does (Lusha billing FAQ, September 2026).
Sample opener: "Jane, quick note since you lead ops at Acme. I have a short idea on dock scheduling. Open to it?"
Pros
- Low entry price and a free plan with 40 credits.
- API and MCP on every plan.
- Waterfall option for harder-to-find contacts.
- Simple for non-technical reps.
Cons
- Small credit pools per month.
- Phone numbers cost 5 credits.
- Rate limits are per plan and low on Free and Starter.
- No public price at 1M.
Best for: Individual reps who look up contacts by hand. Pricing: Starter $49.90 a month monthly, $37.45 yearly. Pro $69.90, $52.45. Premium $399.90, $299.95 (Lusha pricing, September 2026).

How to choose
- You research each prospect by hand and send fewer than 1,000 a month: Clay.
- You fill templates by API or agent and need volume: LeadOcean.
- Your reps want data and sending in one app: Apollo.
- You want intent signals without a contract: ZoomInfo's GTM AI.
- You already have the personal line and need a safe address: Hunter.
- One rep, a few lookups a day: Lusha.
Verdict
For volume through an API or an agent, LeadOcean wins: career history in one enrich call and a flat $497 a month at 1M. Clay wins when the personal line needs live research on a small list. Apollo wins for reps who send from the same tool, ZoomInfo's GTM AI for intent signals, Hunter for address checking and Lusha for quick manual lookups. Most teams end up with two: a data source and a sender.
FAQ
What makes a cold sales email personable?
It names one fact the reader would recognize, in one sentence, before the ask. A past employer, a role change or a tool they use works. A merge-tag first name does not.
Do these tools write the email?
No. They supply the facts. Clay's agent can draft text, but the five others return data only. Pair them with a sending tool.
Which tool returns career history?
LeadOcean returns past roles, education, certifications and awards from person enrich since October 2026. We did not verify equivalent fields at the other five.
How many personal facts do I need per email?
One. A second fact makes the message longer, not warmer. Pick the strongest and cut the rest.
Can I test this free?
Yes. LeadOcean's Free plan gives 1,000 records for life with no card. Clay, Apollo, Hunter, Lusha and GTM AI each have a free tier too, with smaller or monthly allowances.
Why no reply-rate numbers?
We did not run a send test, so we publish none. Test your own list in small batches and compare.
