A tech stack lookup tool takes a domain or a company and returns the software it runs, such as its CRM, analytics, hosting and payment tools. Sales teams use it to qualify accounts, RevOps teams use it to enrich CRM records, and agent builders use it to ground a prospecting prompt in facts.
Most people start with a browser extension and outgrow it. The extension answers one site at a time. It does not feed a CRM, an agent or a list of 50,000 domains.
This page ranks six tools for people who pull the data in code or through an agent. For a quick one-off check, use our free tech stack checker. For the background on the data itself, read what technographics are.
TL;DR
| Tool | Best for | Starting price | Cost at 1M records a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| LeadOcean | API and agent teams that need the stack and the contacts in one call | Free, then $97 a month | $497 a month (Agency, inside fair use) |
| BuiltWith | Widest web coverage and technology history | Free lookups, then $295 a month | No public 1M price |
| Wappalyzer | Per-site lookups, CRM enrichment and extensions | Free (50 lookups a month), then $250 a month | No public 1M price |
| Crustdata | Technology filters inside a company search API | No public price | No public 1M price |
| HG Insights | Enterprise technographics with intent and IT spend | No public price | No public 1M price |
| UpLead | Contact lists for companies that run a given tool | $99 a month ($74 a month billed yearly) | No public 1M price |
What we evaluated
We asked every tool the same five questions. The inputs were the same: one domain, a list of domains, and the question "which companies run Shopify". We read each vendor's public pages and docs. We did not run a lab benchmark, and nothing below is a measured accuracy figure.
- Coverage. How many domains or companies carry technology data, and how many technologies are tracked.
- Freshness and history. Whether each technology has first-seen and last-seen dates, so you can tell a live tool from a retired one.
- API and rate limit. A documented REST endpoint, batch support and the request rate you can actually reach.
- Agent access. A hosted MCP server, and which plan unlocks it.
- Price at volume. A published list price, and what 1M lookups a month costs. Where a vendor publishes no price at 1M, we say so and do not multiply a rate out.
1. LeadOcean: best for API and agent teams that need the stack and the contacts
LeadOcean returns a company's detected technologies in the same record as its firmographics. Send a domain to POST /v1/companies/enrich and read company_detected_technologies. Each entry has the product, the vendor, a category and first and last detected dates. A lookup that finds nothing is a 404 and costs nothing (LeadOcean company docs, October 2026).
The same technology fields work as filters. Search companies by technologies or technologyCategories (105 categories), then pull the people at those companies with the same key. That is the part the pure lookup tools cannot do. You go from "who runs Shopify" to "the VP of Ecommerce at each of those companies" without a second vendor.
The limit is coverage. Technology data comes from website crawls of about 7.8M of LeadOcean's 67M companies, roughly one company in eight. It is a snapshot, not a live scan, and we publish no precision or recall figure. If breadth of web coverage is the whole job, BuiltWith is the better pick.
Pros
- Stack, firmographics and 693M people sit behind one key and one bill.
- Hosted MCP server with 13 tools, including
leadocean_get_companyand the freeleadocean_count_companiesfor sizing a list. - Filter by technology or category, then enrich or export the people.
- No credits: paid plans have a fair-use pace, not a per-record price.
- A miss costs nothing.
Cons
- Technology data covers about one company in eight.
- Website detection only. Back-office tools with no web footprint will not show.
Best for: teams that pull stack data through an API or an agent and then need the buyers at those companies.
Pricing: Free is $0 for 1,000 records, no card. Solo is $97 a month, Agency is $497 a month and Platform is $1,997 a month. Rate limits are 5, 50, 200 and 10,000 requests a second. See pricing and the company tech stack lookup (LeadOcean pricing, October 2026).
2. BuiltWith: best for the widest web coverage
BuiltWith is the reference database for website technology. Its plans page states data from 491.9 million domains, 127,890 technologies and 18+ years of trend history (BuiltWith plans, October 2026). If you need to know who adopted a tool two years ago, nothing here matches it.
The API is broad. The Domain API returns current and historical technologies with confidence scores. Lookups take up to 16 domains per call, or 64 in the fast mode, and a bulk jobs endpoint handles large lists. A Lists API returns every site that uses a given technology, and a Change API returns additions and removals. BuiltWith also exposes its endpoints as MCP tools with an API key (BuiltWith API, October 2026).
The cost is the price and the pace. Documented limits are 10 requests a second and 8 concurrent (BuiltWith Domain API docs, October 2026). It returns websites and some contact data, not a people database, so a second vendor supplies the buyers.
Pros
- 491.9 million domains and 127,890 technologies, per BuiltWith.
- Technology history, change tracking and usage alerts.
- Lists API and bulk domain jobs for large pulls.
- Free single-site lookups, with plans that include CRM integrations.
Cons
- Lowest paid plan is $295 and limits you to 2 technologies for lists.
- 10 requests a second, 8 concurrent, unless you buy a dedicated endpoint.
- API credit pricing is not on the public plans page.
- No people data at depth. You need another tool to reach the buyer.
Best for: market research, technology trends and lists of every site that runs a tool.
Pricing: Basic $295, Pro $495 and Team $995 a month in the plans page's Per Month view. A discounted yearly option exists, and we do not quote it. The Pro and Team plans list unlimited technologies. (BuiltWith plans, October 2026)
3. Wappalyzer: best for per-site lookups and CRM enrichment
Wappalyzer started as a browser extension and is now a lookup API with lead lists. The free account gives 50 technology lookups a month. A lookup returns technologies with categories and confirmation dates, plus company details, social profiles and verified emails where it finds them (Wappalyzer API page, October 2026).
It is the easiest tool to put in front of a sales rep. Extensions cover Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari. Integrations cover Salesforce, HubSpot, Pipedrive, Zapier and Make.
For code and agents, the gate is the plan. Wappalyzer's docs state that the API and the MCP server both need a Business plan (Wappalyzer API docs, October 2026). The hosted MCP server at mcp.wappalyzer.com/mcp has three tools: lookup_site, lookup_subdomains and get_credit_balance (Wappalyzer MCP docs, October 2026). It does one site per call.
Pros
- 50 free technology lookups a month, no card needed to start.
- Extensions and CRM integrations for reps who work in the browser.
- Hosted MCP with OAuth sign-in, so no key is pasted into the client.
- Each lookup can also return emails, phones and company details.
Cons
- API and MCP need the Business plan at $450 a month.
- The MCP lookup is one URL at a time.
- API credits included in plans expire after 60 days.
- The credit cost per lookup is not printed on the pricing page.
Best for: sales and RevOps teams that want lookups in the browser and the CRM. Budget for the Business plan if you need the API.
Pricing: Pro is $250 a month, Business $450 and Enterprise from $850. Annual billing saves 17%, which the page states as a percentage, not as a price. (Wappalyzer pricing, October 2026)
4. Crustdata: best for technology filters inside a company search API

Crustdata is a data API for people, companies and jobs. Technographics is one of its company data groups, and the docs call it filter-only in search, so search never returns it. Filtering on it bills 1 credit. Asking /company/enrich for technographics adds 2 credits per company that returns it, on top of the base 2 (Crustdata pricing docs, September 2026).
Use it when stack data is one input to a wider company or people query. A hosted MCP server at install.crustdata.com/mcp supports OAuth sign-in and an API key (Crustdata MCP docs, September 2026).
The trade-offs are the bill and the pace. Crustdata publishes credits, not dollars, so you cannot price a month before you ask sales. Default limits are 15 requests a minute on company enrich and 30 on search (Crustdata rate limits, September 2026).
Pros
- Technographics works as a search filter alongside company and people filters.
- Hosted MCP server with OAuth.
- Free company identify and autocomplete calls.
Cons
- No public dollar price per credit and no plan list on the pricing page.
- 15 company enrich requests a minute by default.
- Technographics is a premium group billed on top of the base credits.
Best for: teams that already use Crustdata for company search and want a technology filter in the same API.
Pricing: No public price. Credits are priced per plan, and the dollar value is shown in your dashboard. No public 1M price (Crustdata pricing docs, September 2026).
5. HG Insights: best for enterprise technographics with intent
HG Insights is an enterprise technographics vendor. Its pricing page describes HG Copilots, which joins technographic, buyer intent, IT spend, buying center and contact data. It is sold on intelligence credits in Starter, Growth and Enterprise plans (HG Insights pricing, October 2026). It also lists an HG MCP Server among its products.
It fits large sales and strategy teams that want installed-base data, spend estimates and intent signals, not just a list of detected scripts. The reader is a revenue leader with a buying process, not a developer with a key.
The pricing page carries no dollar figures and routes you to a demo. The FAQ answers on that page load by script and we could not read them. We therefore state no limits, credit costs or contract terms for HG Insights.
Pros
- Technographics joined to IT spend, intent and buying-center data.
- Built for enterprise account scoring and territory work.
- Lists an MCP server and agent products.
Cons
- No public price, so no way to forecast cost from the website.
- Sold through a demo, not self-serve.
- No public API documentation or rate limit on the pages we read.
Best for: enterprise teams that want technographics with spend and intent, bought through sales.
Pricing: No public price. Plans are Starter, Growth and Enterprise, sold by demo. No public 1M price (HG Insights pricing, October 2026).
6. UpLead: best for contact lists by technology
UpLead is a B2B contact database that states it tracks 27K+ technologies, alongside 19M+ company profiles (UpLead data page, September 2026). It is a prospecting tool first. You buy it to get verified emails for companies that match a profile, and technology is one of the ways to define that profile.
The plans are simple to read. Essentials is $99 a month for 170 credits, or $74 a month billed yearly. Plus is $199 a month for 400 credits, or $149 billed yearly. Extra credits cost $0.50 to $0.60 each (UpLead pricing, September 2026).
For API and agent work, it is the weakest fit here. The enrichment and full API are on the Professional plan only, which is a custom quote. The API allows 500 requests a minute, and its docs mention no MCP server (UpLead docs, September 2026).
Pros
- Clear monthly and yearly list prices on two self-serve plans.
- Credit is charged only for a Valid or Accept All email.
- Refunds unmatched enrichment rows.
Cons
- API access needs a Professional custom quote.
- No MCP server in its docs.
- Not a tech stack lookup in the strict sense: it returns contacts, not a full technology profile per domain.
- Credit packs, not flat pricing, set the cost at volume.
Best for: small sales teams that want a verified contact list for companies that use a given tool, and do not need an API.
Pricing: Essentials $99 a month ($74 billed yearly), Plus $199 ($149 billed yearly), Professional on quote. No public 1M price (UpLead pricing, September 2026).

Verdict
BuiltWith is the best tech stack lookup tool if the job is technology data and nothing else. LeadOcean is the best for API and agent buyers who need the stack and the people at those companies at one flat price. That holds if one company in eight is enough coverage for your list. Wappalyzer wins for reps who work in the browser and the CRM. Crustdata suits teams already on its API. HG Insights suits enterprise buyers who want intent and spend, and UpLead suits small teams that want contacts, not an API.
FAQ
What is a tech stack lookup tool?
It is a tool that returns the software a company or website uses, such as its CRM, analytics and hosting. Most detect it from a site's code and network calls. Some add dates, so you can see when a tool appeared and when it was last seen.
How accurate are tech stack lookup tools?
None of them is complete. They detect what a website reveals, so back-office tools with no web footprint will not show. Check the last-detected date on each entry and spot-check a few domains you know before you run a large list.
Which tool has the widest coverage?
BuiltWith states 491.9 million domains and 127,890 technologies on its plans page. LeadOcean covers about 7.8M companies with technology data. If breadth is the goal, BuiltWith leads.
Can an AI agent look up a tech stack?
Yes. LeadOcean, BuiltWith, Wappalyzer and Crustdata each have an MCP route. LeadOcean's server has 13 tools, and leadocean_get_company returns the detected technologies for a domain. Wappalyzer's MCP needs a Business plan. See the enrichment page for the call.
Which tools publish a price at 1M lookups a month?
Only LeadOcean prints a flat price that covers it: Agency at $497 a month, inside fair use. BuiltWith, Wappalyzer, Crustdata, HG Insights and UpLead publish no price at 1M, so ask each for a quote.
Is there a free tech stack lookup?
Yes. BuiltWith allows free individual site lookups, and Wappalyzer gives 50 technology lookups a month on a free account. LeadOcean's free plan gives 1,000 records, one-off, with no card. Our free checker covers a quick check.
