Clay and Cognism both find emails and phone numbers, but they are different products. Clay is a workflow layer that buys data from 150+ partners. Cognism is one sales intelligence platform built around verified mobiles.
Verdict
- Pick Clay if a GTM engineer will build waterfalls and research workflows across many providers. You can start on a free plan with an API, and an empty result costs nothing.
- Pick Cognism if reps dial mobile numbers and phone-verified data is the buying reason. Expect a quote call, because Cognism publishes no price.
- Pick neither if you need volume through an API at a price you can read. Neither publishes a 1M price. LeadOcean is one option: Pro is $499 a month, flat.

Data and coverage
Neither tool gives you a record count to hold it to. Cognism says it has "hundreds of millions" of company and contact profiles and no exact number (Cognism FAQ, September 2026). Clay publishes no size either.
That is because Clay is not one database. Its pricing page says you find and enrich data from 150+ providers, and a waterfall asks them in turn until one answers (Clay pricing, September 2026). Coverage depends on which providers you switch on and in what order. Clay describes it that way itself, so read it as its claim, not a test.
Cognism is one dataset, and its pitch is phones. It claims over 10M phone-verified contacts, on-demand verification in under 48 hours, and Do Not Call cross-referencing in 15 territories (Cognism Diamond Data, September 2026). Those are Cognism's numbers, not ours.
Phones are the costly part on Clay. The Free plan has no phone enrichment, and Clay does not publish a credit price per phone number. Its docs only say emails are cheap and phones are not.
Match rate depends on your input. A LinkedIn URL or work email matches far more often than a name alone. Run the same 500 people through each tool before you commit. Clay's Free plan gives 100 Data Credits and 500 Actions. Cognism has no listed free plan, so ask for a trial.
API and developer experience
Both have an API and an MCP server. Cognism is a direct search call. Clay runs a routine you build first, then you poll for results.
Cognism uses OAuth 2.0 client credentials from Settings, M2M Connect. Tokens last 20 minutes, so your code refreshes them (Cognism authentication, September 2026). Search returns 1 to 100 records a page. Add view=contacts to get emails and phones, at one credit a record (Cognism reference, September 2026). Here is one search.
curl --request POST \
--url "https://api.cognism.com/persons/filter?limit=10" \
--header "Authorization: Bearer $COGNISM_ACCESS_TOKEN" \
--header "Content-Type: application/json" \
--data '{
"person": {
"jobTitle": { "include": ["VP Sales"], "match": "ONCE" }
}
}'Clay uses a clay-api-key header and runs routines, which are functions built in Clay. You start a run, then read results by run id (Clay developer docs, September 2026).
curl --request POST \
--url "https://api.clay.com/public/v0/routines/function:t_abc123/run" \
--header "Content-Type: application/json" \
--header "clay-api-key: $CLAY_PUBLIC_API_KEY" \
--data '{"items":[{"id":"row-1","inputs":{"domain":"acme.com"}}]}'The response holds a routine_run_id. You poll GET /routines/run/{id}/results until it returns 200. A run takes 1 to 100 items.
Limits differ in kind. Cognism publishes a number: 500 requests a minute per account, counted separately for search, count and dictionary calls, in a 60-second window (Cognism rate limits, September 2026). Clay's Public API limit is per workspace with no number, and you get a 429 with a Retry-After header when you pass it (Clay developer docs, September 2026).
On access, Clay's Public API and CLI are on every plan, Free included, with search capped by plan. Only the HTTP API column that calls other APIs from a table needs Growth (Clay docs, September 2026). Cognism's MCP and API sit in the Standard and Pro packages and need a package that includes them.
On MCP, Cognism's server has 15 tools: company and people search and count, eight dictionary lookups and three account settings tools. It meters like the API (Cognism MCP docs, September 2026). Clay MCP puts its providers, research agents and your saved functions inside ChatGPT, Claude and Codex (Clay MCP guide, September 2026).
Pricing
Clay publishes a price list, so you can do the arithmetic. Cognism publishes none. Its pricing page lists Standard and Pro, five seats each, and says pricing is tailored to product, team setup and usage (Cognism pricing, September 2026).
At 10,000 records a month
Take 10,000 work emails. For Clay, use its worked example of 0.5 credit per email find. That is 5,000 Data Credits and 10,000 Actions. On monthly billing, the 15,000 Action tier is $60 and the 6,000 credit tier is $290, so $60 + $290 = $350 a month. On yearly billing it is $54 + $261 = $315 (Clay pricing, September 2026).
The 0.5 credit is an example. Clay says a fully enriched record typically costs 6 to 20 Data Credits. So 10,000 full records need 60,000 to 200,000 credits, and the top self-serve tier is 50,000 a month (Clay docs, September 2026).
For Cognism, 10,000 revealed contacts is 10,000 credits, one per contact. Search also spends one search token per record returned. No credit price or seat allocation is published, so there is no dollar figure to show (Cognism credits docs, September 2026). Cognism's own docs disagree on count calls: the credits page says one search token each, while the MCP tool table lists counts as free (Cognism MCP docs, September 2026).
The two are not like for like. Clay's $350 rests on a 0.5 credit example, and the email comes from whichever provider answers. An empty Clay result costs nothing. A Cognism credit is per revealed contact, and you pay again only if that contact changes jobs.
At 1M records a month
There is no public 1M price for either tool.
For Clay, 1,000,000 lookups need 1,000,000 Actions, and Actions cannot be bought as top-ups. The largest self-serve tier is 200,000 Actions and 50,000 Data Credits a month. Above that, Clay sells Enterprise by quote (Clay pricing, September 2026).
The top Growth tier costs $850 + $2,125 = $2,975 a month on monthly billing. At 0.5 credit per email, its 50,000 credits cover 100,000 lookups, not 1M. Do not multiply that out and call it a quote.
For Cognism, 1,000,000 work emails is 1,000,000 credits plus search tokens, and no list price exists to multiply. Speed is not the limit. At 100 records a page and 500 requests a minute, 1M records is 10,000 search calls, about 20 minutes of calls (Cognism rate limits, September 2026). The bill is the open question.
Where Clay wins
- Many providers in one flow. A waterfall tries one source after another, so a miss on one does not end the search.
- No charge for a miss. An enrichment with no result uses no Data Credits and no Actions (Clay pricing, September 2026).
- A price you can read. Launch is $185 a month, Growth $495, and the tier grid is public.
- Unlimited seats and a free plan with an API. The whole team works in one workspace for one plan fee, and Claygent research is on every plan including Free.
Where Cognism wins
- Phone-verified mobiles. Cognism claims 10M+ phone-verified contacts and on-demand verification. Clay has no published phone price (Cognism Diamond Data, September 2026).
- Built for dialing teams. The platform ships contact search, intent data on Pro and integrations with Salesforce, HubSpot and Pipedrive (Cognism, September 2026). Clay is built for builders.
- A published API rate limit. You can read 500 requests a minute before you buy. Clay publishes no number.
- Do Not Call controls. Cognism cross-references Do Not Call lists in 15 territories (Cognism Diamond Data, September 2026), and its account settings mask numbers in do-not-call countries (Cognism MCP docs, September 2026).
If you need volume through an API
We build LeadOcean, so weigh this section accordingly. LeadOcean holds 693M people and 63M companies, reachable over REST and MCP. Free is 1,000 records, one-off, with no card. Pro is $499 a month, flat, with unlimited searches and lookups and 100 requests per second per key (LeadOcean pricing, September 2026).
For bulk work, POST /v1/exports returns up to 50,000 rows per request, and the app has an Exports page with a CSV download (LeadOcean exports docs, September 2026). There is no table builder, dialer or sequencer. If your ops team lives in Clay or your reps live in Cognism, keep them. The Clay alternative page and Clay alternatives roundup go line by line.
FAQ
Is Clay or Cognism cheaper?
Clay is the only one with a price you can check. Launch starts at $185 a month, and 10,000 emails come to about $350 a month on the 0.5 credit example. Cognism publishes no price, so you cannot compare until you get a quote.
What is the difference between Clay and Cognism?
Clay is a workflow tool that routes each lookup to one of 150+ data partners and meters it in Actions and Data Credits. Cognism is a single sales platform with its own dataset, sold on seats and credits by quote. One is a builder's tool, the other is a rep's tool.
Does Cognism have an API on a free plan?
Cognism lists no free plan. API and MCP access are shown on Standard and Pro, and need a package that includes them (Cognism pricing, September 2026).
Can I use the Clay API on the free plan?
Yes. Clay's Public API and CLI are on every plan, Free included. Free caps search at 50 results per request and 100 per 30 days. The HTTP API column needs Growth, from $495 a month ($446 billed yearly) (Clay docs, September 2026).
Which one can do 1M records a month?
Neither publishes a simple answer. Clay's largest self-serve tier tops out at 200,000 Actions a month, so 1M needs an Enterprise quote. Cognism sells 1M credits only by quote, and its API rate limit would not slow you down.
How does LeadOcean compare with these two?
LeadOcean is a data API and MCP server with one flat price, $499 a month on Pro. It is not a table builder or a rep workspace. See also Cognism vs SalesIntel, Cognism vs LeadIQ and Cognism vs Lead411, and the pricing page. Back to the blog.
