ContactOut wins for people who work from LinkedIn and want one tool for emails, personal emails and phones. BetterContact wins for teams with a list of named contacts who want the highest find rate and pay only for valid results. Neither prints a price at 1M records.

Verdict

  • Pick ContactOut if you recruit or sell from LinkedIn in a browser and want personal emails and direct dials from one source. It has a Chrome extension and claims 100M direct dials. Source: ContactOut data, September 2026.
  • Pick BetterContact if you hold a list of names and domains and want the most emails and mobiles found across 20+ providers. Pro starts at $49 a month for 1,000 credits (BetterContact pricing, September 2026).
  • Pick neither if you pull people and company data in code at volume. ContactOut has no public API price, and BetterContact's credits grow with every valid result. A flat-price option is covered in the last section.

Data and coverage

ContactOut owns a people dataset, and BetterContact rents access to many. ContactOut's data page claims 800M profiles, 200M work emails, 150M personal emails and 100M direct dials. Source: ContactOut data, September 2026. BetterContact publishes no database size, because it has no single database to size.

ContactOut disagrees with itself on scale. The data page says 800M, the homepage headline says 350M, and the MCP page says 600M+ (ContactOut homepage, September 2026; ContactOut MCP, September 2026). Ask which number your plan reaches. Its "triple-verified with 99% confidence" line is a claim without a published method. Source: ContactOut data, September 2026.

BetterContact routes each lead through a sequence of providers, including People Data Labs, RocketReach and ContactOut itself (BetterContact, September 2026). It moves to the next provider until it finds a valid result. That is why the find rate can beat any single source on a list you already own.

The starting point differs. ContactOut starts from a LinkedIn profile, an email or a phone. BetterContact needs a first name, a last name and a company or domain, and works better with a LinkedIn URL (BetterContact API docs, September 2026).

BetterContact also has a Lead Finder that searches by company and people criteria. It returns at most 200 leads per request (BetterContact API docs, September 2026). ContactOut has People Search and a People Count tool it pitches for scoping a list before you spend credits (ContactOut API docs; ContactOut MCP, September 2026).

API and developer experience

ContactOut makes you book a meeting for a key, and BetterContact gives you one on sign-up. BetterContact is asynchronous and ContactOut mostly answers in the same call. Placeholders below stand in for real people.

ContactOut, contact info for one LinkedIn profile.

bash
curl "https://api.contactout.com/v1/linkedin/enrich?profile=https://www.linkedin.com/in/jane-doe" \
  --header "Accept: application/json" \
  --header "token: $CONTACTOUT_API_TOKEN"

It consumes 1 email credit if an email is found and 1 phone credit if a phone is found (ContactOut API docs, September 2026). The bulk route runs as a background job. You poll by job_id or pass a callback_url.

BetterContact, waterfall enrichment for one lead.

bash
curl --request POST "https://app.bettercontact.rocks/api/v2/async" \
  --header "Content-Type: application/json" \
  --header "X-API-Key: $BETTERCONTACT_API_KEY" \
  --data '{
    "data": [{
      "first_name": "Jane",
      "last_name": "Doe",
      "company_domain": "acme.com"
    }],
    "enrich_email_address": true,
    "enrich_phone_number": false,
    "webhook": "https://example.com/results"
  }'

A 201 means the batch was accepted, not enriched. You keep the returned id and wait for the webhook or poll for status: "terminated" (BetterContact API docs, September 2026). Submissions are not idempotent, so a retry of a successful POST spends credits twice.

Phone over the API needs the phone add-on, or the call returns 402 (BetterContact API docs, September 2026). The pricing page prices a mobile at 10 credits. No add-on price is published.

On limits, ContactOut is tight where it matters for lists. People Search runs at 60 requests a minute and most other endpoints allow 1,000 a minute (ContactOut API docs, September 2026). BetterContact counts 100 or 200 requests a minute across all endpoints, with up to 100 leads per call (BetterContact API docs, September 2026).

For agents, only ContactOut ships an MCP server. It has 15 tools and OAuth (ContactOut MCP, September 2026). With BetterContact you wrap the REST API yourself or call it from a workflow tool.

Pricing

ContactOut sells monthly seats and hides the API price. BetterContact sells credit steps and charges only for valid results. Figures use the monthly list price first, with the billed-yearly price after it.

At 10,000 valid work emails a month

  • ContactOut: no public price for this volume. Email is $49 a month ($39 a month billed yearly). Email + Phone is $99 a month ($79 billed yearly). Both are one user per company, with 300 or 600 exports a month (ContactOut pricing, September 2026).

"Unlimited" is capped at 2,000 email credits and 1,000 phone credits per account per month (ContactOut terms, September 2026). Arithmetic: 10,000 / 2,000 = 5 accounts' worth, and one user per company rules that out. Volume means the quote-only Team / API plan.

  • BetterContact: 10,000 emails is 10,000 credits at 1 credit each. The 10,000-credit Pro step is $399 a month, about $332.50 a month billed yearly (BetterContact pricing, September 2026). The yearly figure is derived from the stated two months free.

At 10,000 a month only BetterContact has a price you can read. For mobiles the same 10,000 valid numbers would need 100,000 credits, and the top public step stops at 50,000.

At 1M valid work emails

  • ContactOut: no public price at 1M. The highest public tier is Email + Phone at $99 a month ($79 billed yearly), and the API is quote only. Arithmetic, not a public path: 1,000,000 / 2,000 = 500 account-months, and self-serve allows one user per company.
  • BetterContact: no public price at 1M. The highest public step is 50,000 credits for $1,999 a month, or $0.03998 a credit (BetterContact pricing, September 2026). Enterprise starts from $799 a month on a custom quote. A 1M month is 20 times the top step, so it is a quote.

A BetterContact credit is one valid email, or a tenth of a valid mobile. A ContactOut API credit is one email, one phone or one search, with no dollar price in its docs (ContactOut API docs, September 2026). Do not compare them as like for like.

Where ContactOut wins

Personal emails and phones from one source. It claims 150M personal emails and 100M direct dials, and one call returns both. Source: ContactOut data, September 2026.

A workflow for people in a browser. It has a Chrome extension, a search portal and email campaigns. The free tier gives 5 emails a day, so a recruiter can start with no key and no code (ContactOut pricing, September 2026).

MCP and a faster API. It has a 15-tool MCP server and a 1,000 a minute limit on most endpoints. BetterContact has neither (ContactOut API docs, September 2026).

Where BetterContact wins

Find rate on a list you own. It asks 20+ providers in turn until one returns a valid result. A single database cannot match that reach on a few thousand named contacts.

A price you can read. It prints seven Pro steps from $49 to $1,999 a month. ContactOut prints Contact Us for the API (BetterContact pricing, September 2026).

Pay only for valid results. A miss costs nothing, and unused credits roll over, capped at twice the subscribed amount. Scoring low-propensity mobile numbers is free, and you pay only for the high-propensity ones (BetterContact pricing, September 2026).

If you need volume through an API

LeadOcean is a people and company data API with a hosted MCP server and no credits. It holds 693M people and 63M companies, with 366M people that have an email and 166M that have a phone number. Free gives you 1,000 records one-off with no card. Pro is $499 a month, flat, with REST and MCP on both plans. Export rows with POST /v1/exports, 50,000 per request, or size an audience first with a free count over MCP. LeadOcean has no extension, sequencer or waterfall, so you export and send elsewhere (LeadOcean pricing).

FAQ

Is ContactOut better than BetterContact?

For LinkedIn-based work and phones from one source, yes. For the best find rate on a list of names and domains, BetterContact. One is a database and the other is a waterfall.

Does BetterContact have an API?

Yes, and a key comes with sign-up. It has async enrichment, Lead Finder, Company Finder and profile lookups (BetterContact API index, September 2026). Phone enrichment needs a plan add-on.

Does ContactOut have an API or MCP server?

Yes to both, but there is no self-serve API key. The pricing page shows Contact Us for Team / API, and the docs say to book a meeting (ContactOut API docs, September 2026). The MCP server has 15 tools (ContactOut MCP, September 2026).

Which is cheaper at 10,000 records a month?

BetterContact has the only readable price: $399 a month for 10,000 credits, enough for 10,000 valid emails. ContactOut's self-serve plans cost less but cap near 2,000 emails an account.

Which is cheaper at 1M records?

Neither has a public price at 1M. BetterContact's top public step is 50,000 credits for $1,999 a month, and ContactOut's API is quote only. Ask both for a written quote.

Can I use both?

Yes. Run the list through BetterContact for emails and mobiles, then use ContactOut in the browser for LinkedIn lookups the waterfall missed. Watch credit use on both sides.
