Hunter.io finds emails from its own index and prints a price at 1M credits. BetterContact asks 20+ providers in turn and prints no price at 1M. Both bill per result, so cost scales with volume on either.
Every fact below was checked in September 2026 and carries its source link. Prices are USD list prices, monthly figure first and billed-yearly figure after it.
Verdict
- Pick Hunter.io if you start from a domain or a name and want the lowest published price per email. Its MCP server works on every plan. It is $0.0069 a credit at 1M on its Data Platform (Hunter Data Platform, September 2026).
- Pick BetterContact if you hold a list with names and company domains, and want a waterfall, especially for mobile numbers. It routes each lead across 20+ providers and charges only for valid results (BetterContact pricing, September 2026).
- Pick neither if you start from an audience, such as VPs of Sales in Canada, and not from a list of names. You need filters, an MCP server that returns records, or a fixed bill at 1M records. See the LeadOcean section below.

Data and coverage
Hunter.io owns an index. BetterContact rents several. That is the main difference, and it shapes everything else on this page.
Hunter publishes no database size. Its homepage shows a counter of 150,430,313 email addresses verified, which counts verifications, not records (Hunter, October 2026). Email Finder takes a domain plus a first and last name. It returns an address, a confidence score and a verification status, and it charges nothing when it finds nothing (Hunter API docs, September 2026). Domain Search goes the other way: give it a domain, get the people Hunter holds there, filterable by seniority and department.
BetterContact has no database of its own to quote. Its pricing page cites 20+ data providers, an email check by Bouncer and charges only for valid results (BetterContact pricing, September 2026). A lead goes to one provider, then the next if that one misses. It wants a first name, last name and a company or domain, and a LinkedIn URL when you ask for a phone (BetterContact create docs, September 2026).
Emails are close. A waterfall should find more on a hard list than one index, and Hunter's index is large for its price. Neither vendor publishes a find rate we could verify, and we did not test either.
Phones are where they split. BetterContact sells mobile numbers as a headline feature, at 10 credits each, with a score for the likelihood they connect. Hunter has a phone_number field on its results but no phone finder, no phone count and no phone price on the pages we read. If mobile numbers matter, BetterContact is the one to test.
API and developer experience
Hunter answers in the same call. BetterContact takes a batch and answers later. Placeholders below stand in for real people.
Hunter.io Email Finder, from its API docs, checked September 2026:
curl "https://api.hunter.io/v2/email-finder?domain=acme.com&first_name=Jane&last_name=Doe" \
-H "X-API-KEY: $HUNTER_API_KEY"The response carries data.email, data.score and data.verification.status. If no email is found, no credit is charged.
BetterContact, from its create docs, checked September 2026. A batch takes up to 100 leads:
curl --request POST "https://app.bettercontact.rocks/api/v2/async" \
--header "X-API-Key: $BETTERCONTACT_API_KEY" \
--header "Content-Type: application/json" \
--data '{
"data": [{"first_name": "Jane", "last_name": "Doe", "company_domain": "acme.com"}],
"enrich_email_address": true,
"webhook": "https://example.com/bettercontact/results"
}'A 201 means the batch was accepted, not enriched. Keep the returned id, then wait for the webhook or poll GET /async/{request_id}. The docs warn that submissions are not idempotent, so a retried successful POST spends credits twice.
Rate limits use different units, and they change the math at volume. Hunter's Email Finder allows 15 a second and 500 a minute. One lookup per call means 1M lookups need 2,000 minutes of calls at the cap, about 33 hours. Hunter signals a rate limit with a 403 and a usage limit with a 429, which trips up retry logic (Hunter API docs, September 2026).
BetterContact counts per minute across all endpoints. On Pro, 200 requests at 100 leads a call is 20,000 leads a minute, so 1M leads is 50 minutes of submitting. Over the limit it returns 429 with the body Retry later (BetterContact rate limits, September 2026). Submitting is fast. The enrichment itself still runs in the background.
On MCP, Hunter has an official remote server that your assistant connects to with a Hunter API key. It covers Discover, Domain Search, Email Finder, the Verifier and lead lists, and your plan credits apply (Hunter MCP, September 2026). We found no MCP server in BetterContact's docs index.
Pricing
Hunter is cheaper at every volume where both publish a price. The examples assume every lookup finds an email, so a lower find rate lowers both bills.
At 10,000 emails a month
- Hunter Growth: $149 a month for 10,000 credits. Billed yearly it is $104 a month ($1,248 a year) for 120,000 credits a year (Hunter pricing, September 2026). Cost per email: $149 / 10,000 = $0.0149.
- BetterContact Pro, 10,000-credit step: $399 a month. Billed yearly it is about $332.50 a month ($3,990 a year), from its pay-10-months-keep-12 rule (BetterContact pricing, September 2026). Cost per email: $399 / 10,000 = $0.0399.
BetterContact costs about 2.7 times as much per email here ($399 / $149). Hunter's Data Platform is dearer at this size: 10,000 Search credits cost $209 once (Hunter Data Platform, September 2026).
At 1M emails a month
- Hunter.io: 1,000,000 Search credits cost $6,900 on the Data Platform, $0.0069 a credit. It is one purchase, valid 12 months (Hunter Data Platform, September 2026). A second 1M the next month is a second purchase.
- BetterContact: 1,000,000 credits. No public 1M price. The top public step covers 50,000 credits for $1,999 a month, which is 5% of the volume. Enterprise is listed from $799 a month on a custom quote (BetterContact pricing, September 2026).
We show no dollar figure for BetterContact at 1M, because it publishes none. Ask sales.
Hunter's all-in-one plans do not scale to 1M. By our arithmetic, Scale at $299 plus 975,000 pack credits at up to $0.02 each is about $19,799. A pack purchase caps at 180,000 credits (Hunter help center, September 2026). For 1M, use the Data Platform.
Phones make the sums bigger on BetterContact. At 10 credits each, 5,000 mobiles use 50,000 credits, the whole top step at $1,999. Over the API a mobile also needs a phone add-on, or the call returns 402. Neither the pricing page nor the docs publish the add-on price, so ask BetterContact before you budget for API mobiles (BetterContact docs, October 2026).
Credits differ in how long they live. Hunter's monthly credits do not roll over, while yearly and Data Platform credits last 12 months (Hunter help center, September 2026). BetterContact credits roll over, capped at twice the plan, and annual plans roll over for 12 months. Catch-all emails are charged unless you pay for catch-all verification (BetterContact docs, September 2026).
Where Hunter.io wins
- Price you can read, at every size. Plans run from Free to Scale, and the Data Platform prices 1M. BetterContact stops at 50,000 credits.
- Lower cost per email. $0.0149 at 10,000 a month against $0.0399.
- An MCP server today. It is included on every plan, including Free.
- Search by domain. Domain Search lists the people Hunter holds at a company. BetterContact needs the name first.
- A free plan that renews. 50 credits every month, not once.
- More than data. Sequences, a browser extension and a verifier sit in the same account (Hunter, September 2026).
Where BetterContact wins
- Find rate on a list you own. A waterfall asks the next provider when one misses, and you pay only for valid results.
- Mobile numbers. Phones are a core product, scored for likelihood to connect.
- Batch speed. 100 leads a call, which is 20,000 leads a minute on Pro.
- Rollover. Unused credits carry over, capped at twice the plan.
- No-code reach. It lists 28 native integrations and offers CSV upload and download (BetterContact, September 2026).
- Small starts. Starter is $15 a month, and Pro starts at $49 for 1,000 credits.
If you need volume through an API
Neither tool is built to pull a million records from a filterable database. LeadOcean holds 693M people and 63M companies behind REST and a 12-tool MCP server that returns records. Pro is $499 a month flat with no credits and no per-record price. Free gives 1,000 records one-off with no card. POST /v1/exports returns up to 50,000 rows per request (LeadOcean exports docs, September 2026). It is not a name-and-domain lookup: you search by domain first, then enrich by person_id. See pricing.
FAQ
Is Hunter.io or BetterContact better for finding emails?
For a domain you already know, Hunter.io is cheaper and answers in one call. For a list of names you own, BetterContact asks 20+ providers in turn, which may find more on a hard list. We did not test either find rate.
Which is cheaper, Hunter.io or BetterContact?
Hunter.io. At 10,000 emails a month Growth is $149 against $399 for BetterContact Pro. At 1M Hunter prints $6,900 on the Data Platform, and BetterContact prints no price.
Do Hunter.io and BetterContact have an API and an MCP server?
Both have a REST API. Hunter also has an official MCP server, included in all plans. We found no MCP server in BetterContact's docs index.
Do they charge for emails they cannot find?
No. Hunter charges a credit only when an email is found. BetterContact charges only for valid results, though catch-all emails are charged unless you add catch-all verification.
Can I use both?
Yes. Run named leads through BetterContact first. Send the misses to Hunter's Email Finder as a second pass, and load only verified addresses into your sequencer. Each tool bills only for what it returns.
Is there a cheaper way to get 1M records?
If you can start from filters, yes. LeadOcean Pro is $499 a month flat, and counts are free. Read the Hunter alternative page.
