Hunter.io is an email finder with outreach attached, priced in credits. LeadOcean is a data API with no credits, one flat price and an MCP server that returns records. If you look up emails one domain at a time and send from Hunter, stay. If you pull data in code or through an agent at volume, LeadOcean is the cheaper and simpler source.
Why teams switch from Hunter.io
Credits cap the month
Hunter sells monthly credits. One credit is one email found, and verifying an email costs half a credit (Hunter pricing, September 2026). The top self-serve plan, Scale, includes 25,000 credits a month. A bigger pull goes through Data Platform. It sells 1,000,000 Search credits for $6,900, bought once and valid 12 months (Hunter Data Platform, September 2026).
The lookup starts at a domain
Hunter's core calls take a domain, or a name plus a domain. Domain Search returns 10 results by default and 100 at most per call (Hunter API docs, September 2026). To build a list by title or seniority across a market, you page through domains one at a time.
Rate limits are per endpoint
Email Finder and Domain Search allow 15 requests a second and 500 a minute. Email Verifier allows 10 a second and 300 a minute. Discover allows 5 a second and 50 a minute (Hunter API docs, September 2026). That is fine for a sequence and slow for a pipeline.
One dataset, not one lookup
Hunter's homepage cites 150,430,313 verified email addresses (Hunter, September 2026). It is an email index. LeadOcean holds people and companies in one schema, with titles, industries and funding to search on before you ask for an address.

What 1M, 5M and 25M records cost
Hunter prices by the credit, so cost scales with volume. LeadOcean Pro stays at $499 a month. Hunter's 1M figure is its published Data Platform price for 1,000,000 Search credits. Above 1,000,000 credits the price is custom.
| Records a month | Hunter.io at list price | LeadOcean |
|---|---|---|
| 1M | $6,900, bought once on Data Platform, valid 12 months. | $499 a month. |
| 5M | No public price. Above 1,000,000 credits is custom. | $499 a month. |
| 25M | No public price. Above 1,000,000 credits is custom. | $499 a month. Past fair use, one email raises the headroom. |
Hunter arithmetic: one credit per email found, so 1M emails is 1,000,000 Search credits at $0.0069 each, or $6,900 (Hunter Data Platform pricing, September 2026). Data Platform credits are one-off and valid 12 months. The all-in-one plans cost more at that volume, and credit packs cap at 180,000 credits per purchase (Hunter help center, September 2026).
Above 25,000 credits a month, all-in-one Enterprise is custom. On Data Platform the published rate falls from $0.0153 a credit at 25,000 to $0.0095 at 100,000 and $0.0069 at 1,000,000. Larger volumes are custom (Hunter Data Platform pricing, September 2026).
A credit and a LeadOcean record are not the same unit. A Hunter credit buys one email. A LeadOcean record is one person or company returned, with the profile and status included. On Data Platform, 50,000 Search credits cost $475, so $499 buys about 50,000 credits. Below that volume Hunter is cheaper.
The calculator below prices every Hunter credit at the 1,000,000-credit rate of $0.0069, Hunter's lowest published rate. Below 1M, Hunter's rate per credit is higher, so it understates Hunter's cost.

Where LeadOcean wins
A flat bill at any volume
Pro is $499 a month. Every person or company returned counts as a record, but there is no credit balance to watch and no overage invoice. A very large month is paced down to one request a minute until the reset, not cut off. One email to support gets you more headroom.
Search the market, then ask for emails
Filter 693M people by title, seniority, country, industry and funding before you spend a record on an address. Counts are free. Hunter starts from a domain you already know. LeadOcean starts from the audience you want. Hunter's Discover does list companies by industry, headcount and location, and its API call is free. It then hands you domains to look up one at a time.
curl -X POST https://api.leadocean.io/v1/exports \
-H "x-api-key: $LEADOCEAN_API_KEY" -H "content-type: application/json" \
-d '{
"name": "CTOs in Germany",
"filters": { "title": ["CTO"], "country": ["DE"], "emailStatus": ["verified"] },
"limit": 5000,
"preset": "full"
}'That asks for up to 5,000 verified CTOs in one request. A single export takes up to 50,000 rows, so a 1M-row pull is 20 calls over two days.
Built for code and agents
Both tools have an MCP server. LeadOcean's has 12 tools: count an audience for free, search people and companies, enrich one lead, find a phone, and export rows. An agent can go from a sentence to a file without glue code. Add https://api.leadocean.io/mcp to Claude or Cursor and sign in with OAuth. No key gets pasted into a chat.
Faster by default
LeadOcean allows 100 requests per second per key on every plan, including Free. That is 6,000 a minute, against 500 a minute on Hunter's Email Finder. Phones are on the same plan: 166M people have a number, and GET /v2/people/phone returns it for one record.
Where Hunter.io wins
Cheap at small volume
Hunter's Starter plan is $34 a month billed yearly, for 2,000 credits. Its Free plan renews 50 credits every month, where LeadOcean's 1,000 free records are one-off. If you find a few hundred emails a month, Hunter costs a fraction of $499.
Email finding and verifying by hand
Give Hunter a name and a domain and it returns an address. Verification costs half a credit and returns a status per email. The Chrome extension and Sheets add-on put that inside the tools a salesperson already has open. LeadOcean has no extension and no table UI.
Sending from the same place
Hunter includes Sequences, connected email accounts and Signals. You can find, verify and send without leaving one product. LeadOcean is data only, so you export to a sequencer. A team that wants one login for prospecting and outreach should stay on Hunter. Hunter also runs on a recurring free plan with no sales call, and it has years of brand trust with marketers that a newer data API does not.
Use both: LeadOcean for volume, Hunter for the last mile
Keep Hunter where it is strong: verifying borderline addresses and sending. Use LeadOcean to build the list, so your Hunter credits go to rows that need them.
- Create a free LeadOcean key at app.leadocean.io/register. The free plan needs no card. Export your audience with
POST /v1/exports. - Keep rows with status
verified. For rows markedcatch_all, run Hunter's Email Verifier at half a credit each and keep the ones it marks valid. - Load the clean rows into Hunter as leads through its Leads API, and run your Sequence there.
FAQ
Is LeadOcean a full Hunter.io replacement?
No. It replaces Hunter as a data source, not as an outreach tool. If you need Sequences, the extension or Signals, keep Hunter. If you need people, companies and emails in code or an agent, LeadOcean is enough.
How much does Hunter.io cost?
Free is $0 for 50 credits a month. Starter is $49, Growth $149 and Scale $299 a month, or $34, $104 and $209 billed yearly. Those include 2,000, 10,000 and 25,000 credits (Hunter pricing, September 2026).
What is a Hunter.io credit?
One credit is one email found through Domain Search or Email Finder. Verifying an email costs 0.5 credit. Repeat searches inside a billing period count once (Hunter pricing, September 2026).
Does Hunter.io have an API and an MCP server?
Both, on every plan including Free. The MCP server is at mcp.hunter.io/mcp and uses your plan credits (Hunter MCP, September 2026). Limits per endpoint are in the API docs.
What does LeadOcean cost, and is there a limit?
Free gives you 1,000 records, one-off, with no card. Pro is $499 a month, flat, with no credits and no per-record price. Past the fair-usage line a very large month is paced down instead of cut off, and support can raise the headroom.
Do I need a credit card to try it?
No. The free plan needs a work email and no card, and it has the same API and MCP server as Pro. Your 1,000 records last until you spend them.
