ContactOut vs Dropcontact

ContactOut vs Dropcontact (2026): Data, Pricing and API Compared

One is a LinkedIn-first email and phone database with seat plans. The other finds and verifies emails for contacts you already hold, and bills a credit per email found.

ContactOut is a LinkedIn-first database of emails and phones, sold as seat plans with an API on request. Dropcontact is not a database: it finds and verifies business emails for contacts you already have. ContactOut wins for recruiters and reps who work in a browser. Dropcontact wins when you hold a messy list of names and companies.

ContactOut figures were checked in September 2026 and Dropcontact figures in October 2026, each with its source link. Where a vendor publishes nothing, the page says so.

Verdict

  • Pick ContactOut if you source people from LinkedIn and want personal emails, direct dials and a Chrome extension on one seat plan. Email is $49 a month, and the catch is a fair use cap of 2,000 email credits per account.
  • Pick Dropcontact if you start from names and companies, want to pay only for emails found, and want the credit back on a miss. It also suits teams that want a native CRM suite and EU-hosted processing.
  • Pick neither if you need to search a database and pull millions of records through an API at a public price. ContactOut's API price needs a meeting, and Dropcontact has nothing to search. LeadOcean is one option.

Data and coverage

ContactOut owns a searchable dataset and Dropcontact does not. ContactOut lists 800M people profiles, 150M personal emails, 200M work emails, 100M direct dials and 40M companies. Source: ContactOut data page, September 2026. Its own pages disagree on the headline: the homepage says 350M professionals and the MCP page says 600M+ (ContactOut homepage, September 2026). Ask which number your plan reaches.

Dropcontact says it works only with algorithms and uses no contact databases (Dropcontact pricing, October 2026). There is nothing to count or filter. You bring the contact, and it builds the address from a name and a company, then verifies it.

Dropcontact publishes one hit-rate figure. In a 20,000-contact test it reports a 54.9% effective enrichment rate, after removing hard bounces and wrong domains (Dropcontact benchmark, October 2026). The founder designed and funded that study. The page text lists only the top five tools, and ContactOut is not among them. Treat it as a claim to test.

Phones differ in kind. ContactOut sells 100M direct dials, and its Email plan has none (ContactOut pricing, September 2026). Dropcontact returns a phone field, which its docs describe as the company's number, and a mobile_phone field (Dropcontact API docs, October 2026). Its Enterprise plan lists mobiles taken from email signatures. It publishes no coverage count (Dropcontact pricing, October 2026).

Test both on your own list before you pay. Send the same 500 contacts through each free allowance and compare the usable rate.

API and developer experience

The two APIs take different input. ContactOut starts from a LinkedIn profile URL and returns emails and phones for that person. Real-time verification of work emails only runs when you pass email_type=work (ContactOut API docs, September 2026). A miss is a 404.

bash
curl "https://api.contactout.com/v1/people/linkedin?profile=https://www.linkedin.com/in/jane-doe&include_phone=true" \
  -H "Accept: application/json" \
  -H "token: $CONTACTOUT_API_TOKEN"

Dropcontact starts from a name and a company, a LinkedIn URL or an email. You POST up to 250 contacts, then GET the result with the request ID. A custom_callback_url replaces the polling (Dropcontact API docs, October 2026).

bash
DC="https://api.dropcontact.com/v1"
curl -X POST "$DC/enrich/all" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "X-Access-Token: $DROPCONTACT_API_KEY" \
  -d '{"data":[{"first_name":"Jane","last_name":"Doe","website":"acme.com"}],"language":"en"}'

The GET returns "Request not ready yet, try again in 30 seconds" until processing ends. ContactOut's V2 bulk call is also asynchronous: it takes up to 1,000 profiles and returns a job_id you poll or receive by callback (ContactOut API docs, September 2026).

Rate limits differ in shape. ContactOut caps People Search at 60 requests a minute and most other endpoints at 1,000 a minute. Dropcontact allows 60 requests per second, or 3,600 a minute, and each request carries up to 250 contacts.

Access also differs. ContactOut issues API keys by booking a meeting, and its pricing page shows Contact Us for Team / API (ContactOut pricing, September 2026). Dropcontact issues an access token with a subscription, and its Starter plan lists API and MCP access.

For agents, both ship an MCP server. ContactOut's has 15 tools, including search and People Count, and 600+ free credits at onboarding (ContactOut MCP, September 2026). Dropcontact's enriches a contact from a name and company, a full name and company, or a LinkedIn URL, or validates an email. It does not search (Dropcontact API docs, October 2026).

Pricing

ContactOut charges per seat with a fair use cap. Dropcontact charges per email found. To compare them, price a month of lookups at two sizes.

At 10,000 records a month. No ContactOut self-serve plan covers it. Paid "unlimited" plans follow a fair use policy of 2,000 email credits and 1,000 phone credits per account per month (ContactOut terms, September 2026). The Email plan also allows 300 exports a month, and every plan is one user per company.

The arithmetic is 10,000 / 2,000 = 5 accounts, and 5 x $49 = $245 a month. That is not a public path, because of the one-user limit. Volume means the Team / API plan, which has no published price.

Dropcontact needs up to 10,000 credits to find 10,000 emails. The nearest published tier is 11,000 credits: €199 a month on Starter, or €166 a month billed yearly. €199 / 10,000 = €0.0199 per email at best (Dropcontact pricing, October 2026). A miss is refunded, so a lower hit rate lowers the credits you use.

At 1M records a month. Neither tool has a public 1M price. ContactOut's highest public tier is Email + Phone at $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, with 600 exports a month. It sits under the 2,000-email fair use line (ContactOut pricing, September 2026). We do not multiply that out to 1M.

Dropcontact's top published tier is 150,000 credits a month at €2,245 on Starter. Enterprise starts at 200,000 credits on a custom quote (Dropcontact pricing, October 2026). We do not multiply a rate out to 1M here either. Ask each vendor for a quote.

The call counts are plain arithmetic. 1,000,000 contacts at 250 per request is 4,000 POST calls to Dropcontact. 1,000,000 profiles at 1,000 per bulk request is 1,000 calls to ContactOut.

Where ContactOut wins

  • A real dataset. 800M profiles by its own count, with search and a People Count to size a list before you spend credits (ContactOut MCP, September 2026).
  • Phones and personal emails. 100M direct dials and 150M personal emails on the same account.
  • Browser workflow. A Chrome extension and search portal, and a free tier of 5 emails a day (ContactOut pricing, September 2026).
  • Small-seat price. $49 a month for unlimited emails under fair use, against a credit meter.
  • An MCP server that searches. 15 tools, so an agent can find people and not only enrich them.

Where Dropcontact wins

  • Starting from names. It finds a business email from a name and a company. ContactOut's contact info call starts from a LinkedIn URL.
  • Pay on success. A credit is charged only for a verified email, and a miss is refunded (Dropcontact API docs, October 2026).
  • A price you can read. Ten tiers from 500 to 150,000 credits are published, and the API is available on Starter without a meeting.
  • Lower entry price. Starter is €29 a month for 500 credits, and credits carry over on Growth.
  • CRM and EU fit. A native CRM integration suite, a Google Sheets add-on, and processing on EU-based servers, per its pricing page (Dropcontact pricing, October 2026).

If you need volume through an API

LeadOcean is a third option if you want to search, enrich and export at volume on one public price. Free gives you 1,000 records, one-off, with no card. Pro is $499 a month, flat, with no credits and no per-record price, and 100 requests per second per key. Both plans include the REST API and an MCP server with 12 tools. POST /v1/exports pulls up to 50,000 rows per request. See pricing.
