RocketReach vs UpLead (2026): Data, Pricing and API Compared

RocketReach sells plans and Universal Credits. UpLead sells plans with a fixed credit allowance and gates its API. Here is how they differ on coverage, API, MCP and cost at 1M records.

RocketReach is the cheaper way to look up one person at a time, and it has an official MCP server. UpLead is the better app for a rep who wants an accuracy guarantee, but its API sits behind a custom quote. Neither publishes a price at 1M records. This page compares them on data, API, MCP and cost, with the arithmetic shown.

Verdict

  • Pick RocketReach if you look people up by name or LinkedIn URL and want a low entry price. Essentials is $69 a month on monthly billing (reported), and a lookup that finds nothing is free (G2, September 2026; RocketReach FAQ, September 2026).
  • Pick UpLead if reps work in the app and you want a clear price per extra credit, a 95% accuracy claim and refunds for bounces. Plus is $199 a month for 400 credits (UpLead pricing, September 2026).
  • Pick neither if the job is bulk volume through an API at a fixed bill. Both meter by credit and neither publishes a 1M price. See RocketReach alternatives and the LeadOcean section below.

Data and coverage

UpLead states 200M+ contacts with an email. RocketReach claims 700M+ professionals. These are different measures: one counts contacts that have an email, the other counts profiles. Neither vendor gives a count of records with a phone.

Do not choose on the headline count. Run the same 500 contacts you already know through both tools, then count the emails returned, the bounces and the phones. A free test is enough to start: RocketReach gives 5 free lookups and UpLead gives a 7-day test with 5 credits (G2, September 2026; UpLead pricing, September 2026).

Email quality is where the two differ in practice. RocketReach grades each email A, A-, B or F. It charges only for A and A-, and it states that 87% of lookups return a profile and 99% of LinkedIn URL lookups do (RocketReach FAQ, September 2026). Those are vendor claims, not our test.

UpLead verifies each email and charges only for Valid or Accept All. It claims 95% accuracy and refunds bounces and poor data (UpLead, September 2026). Accept All means the domain answers yes to everything, so it is not a proof of delivery.

Phones cost extra on RocketReach, at 6 credits. UpLead includes mobile direct dials in its one credit, though only where it holds one. For a different pairing on the same question, see Seamless.AI vs UpLead.

API and developer experience

UpLead's API is simpler to call. RocketReach's API is simpler to get. You can generate a RocketReach key in account settings, but the docs say to email the API team to set up a plan. UpLead's full API is on Professional, which is a custom quote.

RocketReach's person lookup, from its docs (RocketReach docs, September 2026):

bash
curl "https://api.rocketreach.co/api/v2/person/lookup?linkedin_url=https://www.linkedin.com/in/jane-doe" \
  -H "Api-Key: $ROCKETREACH_API_KEY"

This is a GET. The lookup can answer with a status of progress, so you poll the status endpoint or register a webhook to receive the verified emails.

UpLead's person search, from its docs (UpLead API docs, September 2026):

bash
curl "https://api.uplead.com/v2/person-search?email=jane@acme.com" \
  -H "Authorization: $UPLEAD_API_KEY"

It answers in one response with the record, email_status and mobile_directdial. It takes an email, or a domain plus first and last name. UpLead's 429 response carries a Retry-After header.

Rate limits are where the two split most. RocketReach throttles by plan and by period. Person lookups run 15 a minute and 5,000 a month on Essentials, 50 and 20,000 on Pro, 100 and 50,000 on Ultimate, and 250 and 200,000 on Custom. Bulk jobs are capped at 100 a day on the three self-serve plans (RocketReach rate limits, September 2026).

UpLead uses one flat limit of 500 requests per minute and returns X-RateLimit headers so a client can pace itself (UpLead API docs, September 2026). The docs publish no monthly request cap. The real ceiling is your credit balance.

On MCP, only RocketReach ships a server. It exposes 9 tools, including person_lookup and email_verify, behind OAuth 2.1. UpLead's docs mention none, so an agent goes through a third-party connector.

Pricing

Both vendors meter by credit, so cost grows with volume. The examples count one email lookup as one record. Prices are monthly list first. Neither vendor publishes an API price.

What the meter hides

  • RocketReach: a re-lookup of the same profile is free while the plan is active, and B or F grade emails cost nothing (RocketReach FAQ, September 2026). Phones cost 6 credits, three times a professional email.
  • UpLead: each plan includes one user (UpLead pricing, September 2026), and extra credit purchases are capped at $2,000 a day (UpLead help center, September 2026). Unmatched enrichment rows are refunded.
  • Both: only good results are billed, so the bill tracks your hit rate. Test 500 of your own contacts before you size a plan.

10,000 records a month

RocketReach. Ultimate has 1,000 exports a month. 10,000 / 1,000 = 10 seats, and 10 x $209 = $2,090 a month on monthly billing (G2 reported). The API route needs 2 credits per professional email, so 10,000 x 2 = 20,000 credits. There is no dollar price per credit, so ask api@rocketreach.co.

UpLead. Plus is $199 a month and includes 400 credits. The other 9,600 credits cost $0.50 each, which is $4,800. $199 + $4,800 = $4,999 a month. That assumes every record has a Valid or Accept All email. Annual-plan prices for extra credits are not shown on the pricing page. API use needs Professional, so that route has no public price.

At this size RocketReach is cheaper on list, if you accept ten seats. UpLead is simpler to budget because it prints the price per credit (UpLead pricing, September 2026).

1M records a month

RocketReach. No public 1M price. The highest published person lookup cap is 200,000 a month on the Custom tier, so 1M lookups is 5 months at the cap (RocketReach rate limits, September 2026). Above that, the price comes from a quote.

UpLead. No public 1M price. Extra credit purchases are capped at $2,000 a day (UpLead help center, September 2026). $2,000 / $0.50 = 4,000 credits a day, and 4,000 x 31 = 124,000. Add the 400 included and Plus tops out near 124,400 credits and $62,199 in a 31-day month. Professional is a custom quote.

So 1M records is a sales conversation on both. Ask each for a written price at your volume and confirm whether limits apply.

Where RocketReach wins

  • Entry price. Essentials is $69 a month on monthly billing (reported), against $99 for UpLead Essentials. For one rep, it is the cheaper buy.
  • MCP. An official server with 9 tools. UpLead has none of its own.
  • API below the top tier. RocketReach lists API limits for Essentials, Pro and Ultimate. UpLead's API starts at Professional.
  • A free miss. No credit is charged when a lookup finds nothing (RocketReach FAQ, September 2026). It also has a standalone email verify endpoint.

For other RocketReach matchups, see RocketReach vs SalesIntel and RocketReach vs LeadIQ.

Where UpLead wins

  • Accuracy terms. A 95% accuracy claim, real-time verification and bounce refunds (UpLead, September 2026). RocketReach states grades, not a guarantee.
  • Clear credit price. $0.60 an extra credit on Essentials and $0.50 on Plus, printed on the page. RocketReach prints none for the API.
  • One-response lookup. Person search returns the record, email_status and mobile direct dial in one call, with no polling or webhook.
  • Rep tools. A Chrome extension and CRM integrations on all paid plans (UpLead pricing, September 2026).

If you need volume through an API

LeadOcean is a data layer, not a rep app. Free is 1,000 records one-off with no card, and Pro is $499 a month flat with no credits and no overage invoice. The same dataset is reachable over REST and over an MCP server with 12 tools, on both plans. For a large pull, POST /v1/exports returns up to 50,000 rows per request (LeadOcean exports docs, September 2026). See pricing for what Pro includes.
