Cognism vs UpLead (2026): Data, Pricing and API Compared

Cognism sells phone-verified mobiles to European sales teams on a quote. UpLead sells verified contacts by the credit at a public price and gates its API. Here is how they compare on data, API, MCP and cost at 1M records.

Cognism and UpLead sell different things. Cognism is a sales platform built around phone-verified mobiles and Do Not Call screening, priced by quote. UpLead is a verified-contact database with a public credit price, but its API sits on a custom-quote plan. Neither publishes a price at 1M records. This page compares them on data, API, MCP and cost, with the arithmetic shown.

Verdict

  • Pick Cognism if your reps dial mobiles, you sell into Europe and you have budget for a quote. It claims 10M+ phone-verified contacts and cross-checks Do Not Call lists in 15 territories (Cognism Diamond Data, September 2026).
  • Pick UpLead if you run small, accuracy-first lookups in its app and want a price you can read. Essentials is $99 a month for 170 credits, and a credit is charged only for a Valid or Accept All email (UpLead pricing, September 2026; UpLead API docs, September 2026).
  • Pick neither if the job is bulk volume through an API at a fixed bill. Both meter by credit, and neither lists a 1M price. LeadOcean is built for that case. See the last section.

Data and coverage

Cognism does not give a profile count. Its FAQ says "hundreds of millions" of company and contact profiles and adds that it does not usually make general coverage claims (Cognism FAQ, September 2026). UpLead states 200M+ contacts with email addresses and 19M+ companies. Both are vendor numbers, and the UpLead one comes from its data page, September 2026.

The phone story is the real split. Cognism claims 10M+ phone-verified contacts, on-demand verification in under 48 hours and Do Not Call cross-referencing in 15 territories (Cognism Diamond Data, September 2026). That is a small, checked set. UpLead includes mobile direct dials in the same credit but publishes no phone count and makes no phone-verification claim.

The two treat bad email differently. UpLead returns an email_status on every contact and charges a credit only for Valid or Accept All. An unmatched enrichment row is refunded, and the same record is never charged twice (UpLead API docs, September 2026). UpLead also states a 95% accuracy guarantee and refunds bounces (UpLead data page, September 2026).

Cognism charges a credit per revealed contact and nothing to view one again. A credit is used again only if the contact changes jobs (Cognism pricing, September 2026).

Size is not reach. Pull 500 contacts from your own CRM that you know are good, across regions and seniority levels. Run the same list through both tools. Count the emails returned, the bounces and the phones, then read the credit meter for your real cost per match.

API and developer experience

Cognism has the larger API surface, but you need a package with API access first. Auth is OAuth 2.0 client credentials from Settings, M2M Connect. Access tokens last 1,200 seconds, so a long job refreshes them (Cognism authentication, September 2026).

Cognism's person search, from its docs (Cognism API reference, September 2026):

bash
curl -X POST "https://api.cognism.com/persons/filter?limit=100&view=contacts" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $COGNISM_ACCESS_TOKEN" \
  -H "content-type: application/json" \
  -d '{"person":{"jobTitle":{"include":["Marketing"]},"contact":{"email":{"exists":true}}}}'

Search runs from limit 1 to 100, default 50. The person schema has 13 person filter fields and the company schema has 21 (Cognism API reference, September 2026). Search tokens are charged at 1 per record returned, and credits at 1 per person record with the contacts view (Cognism credits and search tokens, September 2026).

UpLead's API is simpler to read and harder to get. A person lookup by email is one GET, from its docs (UpLead API docs, September 2026):

bash
curl "https://api.uplead.com/v2/person-search?email=jane@acme.com" \
  -H "Authorization: $UPLEAD_API_KEY"

It returns the person, the email_status and your remaining credits. The Prospector Pro, Quick Search, Industries and Lists APIs are for Professional, Elite and Enterprise plans only. The pricing page ticks the Enrichment API and Full API Access only on Professional, a custom annual quote (UpLead pricing, September 2026).

On MCP, Cognism runs a hosted server with 15 tools that map one to one onto its API and spend the same credits (Cognism MCP docs, September 2026). UpLead mentions none.

On limits, both allow 500 requests a minute. That is about 8 a second. Cognism applies it per operation (search, count, dictionary) and raises it per package.

Pricing

Cognism publishes no price. UpLead publishes plan prices and a per-credit rate. The examples count one work-email lookup as one record.

Cognism at 10,000 records a month

10,000 revealed contacts is 10,000 credits, plus 10,000 search tokens if you find them by search. Cognism publishes no price per plan, seat or credit, so no dollar figure exists to calculate (Cognism pricing, September 2026). Each seat includes a credit allocation of an unpublished size, and extra credits can be bought. Get a written quote.

Cognism at 1M records a month

No public 1M price. A 1M pull needs 1,000,000 credits and search tokens for the records returned. At 100 records a page, that is 10,000 search calls, about 20 minutes at 500 requests a minute. The calls are fast. The bill is a quote.

UpLead at 10,000 records a month

Plus is $199 a month with 400 credits, or $149 a month billed yearly. Extra credits cost $0.50 each on the monthly plan (UpLead pricing, September 2026).

  • Plus, monthly billing: 10,000 - 400 included = 9,600 extra credits x $0.50 = $4,800, plus $199 = $4,999 a month.
  • Essentials, monthly billing: 10,000 - 170 = 9,830 extra credits x $0.60 = $5,898, plus $99 = $5,997 a month.

UpLead caps extra credit purchases at $2,000 a day, so the $4,800 takes at least three days (UpLead help center, September 2026). The extra-credit rate on yearly billing is not printed. Plus does not list API access, so this is an in-app route.

UpLead at 1M records a month

No public 1M price. The highest public tier is Plus, and the daily cap decides the rest: $2,000 / $0.50 = 4,000 extra credits a day x 31 days = 124,000 extra credits. With the 400 included, that is about 124,400 credits for $62,199 in the month, an eighth of 1M. Multiplying $0.50 out to 1M credits gives $500,000, but that needs $16,129 of purchases a day, over the cap. Professional is a custom quote with annual billing only.

Where Cognism wins

  • Phone-verified mobiles. A checked set of 10M+ numbers, with on-demand verification in under 48 hours (Cognism Diamond Data, September 2026). UpLead publishes no phone count.
  • Do Not Call screening. Cognism cross-references Do Not Call lists in 15 territories. If you cold-call in Europe, that matters.
  • API and MCP on the same credits. One credit pool covers the platform, Enrich, the API and a 15-tool MCP server (Cognism pricing, September 2026).
  • Signals and workflow. Pro adds buying-intent data from Bombora Company Surge (Cognism pricing, September 2026).

Where UpLead wins

  • A price you can read. $99, $199 or a quote. You can budget a small team before you talk to anyone.
  • Pay only for usable emails. A credit is charged only for Valid or Accept All, and unmatched enrichment rows are refunded (UpLead API docs, September 2026).
  • An accuracy guarantee. UpLead states a 95% guarantee and refunds bounces and poor data (UpLead data page, September 2026).
  • A free way to test. Test Drive is 5 credits for 7 days, no quote call (UpLead pricing, September 2026).

If you need volume through an API

Both tools meter by credit, and neither publishes a price at 1M records a month. LeadOcean is a data API with one flat price. Pro is $499 a month with no credits, and the Free plan gives 1,000 records, one-off, with no card. You get 693M people and 63M companies over REST and a 12-tool MCP server on every plan, at 100 requests per second per key. Bulk export is POST /v1/exports at 50,000 rows per request, up to 500,000 rows a day (LeadOcean docs, September 2026).

If you are comparing other contact finders, we also compared UpLead against Seamless.AI and RocketReach, and Cognism against SalesIntel. If Cognism is your current tool, see the Cognism alternative page and Cognism alternatives compared. Plans are on the pricing page.
