An AI email lead generation tool finds and verifies business email addresses for the people you want to reach. Most teams need one when a rep, a founder or a script has to turn a title and a company into a sendable address. The hard part is not the first 1,000 emails. It is what 1M costs and whether the tool survives an agent calling it.
Teams leave these tools for the same reasons: credits that expire, seats that multiply the bill, and rate limits that stop a bulk job. Pages for the tools we cover in depth: Apollo, Clay, Hunter, Prospeo and FullEnrich.
We did not run a find-rate benchmark, so no tool here has a measured hit rate from us. We priced 1M work-email lookups from each vendor's own public list, as of September 2026. Where a vendor publishes no price at that volume, the table says so.
TL;DR
| Tool | Best for | Starting price | Cost at 1M records a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| LeadOcean | API, agent and volume pulls | Free, then Solo $97 a month | $497 a month (Agency, fair-use pace) |
| Apollo | Reps who want database and outreach in one seat | Basic $65 a month per seat ($49 billed yearly) | $24,750 a month (250 Professional seats), $19,600 a month billed yearly |
| Clay | Waterfall enrichment inside a table | Launch $185 a month ($167 billed yearly) | No public 1M price |
| Hunter | Domain-based email finding at a low unit rate | Starter $49 a month ($34 billed yearly) | $6,900, one purchase (Data Platform) |
| Prospeo | Verified emails and mobiles on credits | Starter $49 a month per user ($37 billed yearly) | $14,456 a month, or $11,223 once on yearly billing |
| FullEnrich | Waterfall across 25+ sources | Pro $29 a month for 500 credits ($26 billed yearly) | No public 1M price |
What we evaluated
- Cost at 1M work-email lookups a month. Monthly list price first, billed-yearly figure after it. We never multiply a rate out when the vendor has no public tier that high.
- API and rate limit. Can a script or agent call it, and how many requests a second before it throttles.
- MCP server. Does the vendor run a hosted MCP server, and on which plans.
- Email quality signals. Does each record carry a verification status you can filter on before you send.
- Pricing mechanics. Credits, seats, expiry and what a miss costs.
1. LeadOcean: best for API, agent and volume pulls
LeadOcean is a people and company data API with a hosted MCP server. It holds 693M people and 67M companies, and 366M of those people have an email. You search by 50 people filters, then pull work emails with GET /v2/people/email/work or enrich a person with POST /v1/people/enrich and reveal_email.
The cost model is the point. There are no credits. Solo is $97 a month for one person. Agency is $497 a month for teams, with 1M enrichments a day, 200 requests a second and 5 keys. Free is 1,000 records for life and no card. Sizing a list is free: leadocean_count_leads and GET /v1/companies/count cost nothing.
curl -X POST "https://api.leadocean.io/v1/people/search?count=true" \
-H "x-api-key: $LEADOCEAN_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"jobLevel":["VP"],"jobFunction":["Sales & Business Development"],"country":["CA"],"limit":1}'The app at app.leadocean.io has an Exports page with a filter builder, a column picker and a price preview, but LeadOcean has no rep workspace. There is no sequencer, dialer, CRM or Chrome extension. You bring your own sender.
Pros
- Flat price: $497 a month covers 1M lookups at Agency, with no per-record invoice.
- 13 MCP tools over OAuth 2.1, on every plan.
- Every email carries one of 13
email_statusvalues, so you filter before you send. - Counts and breakdowns are free, so you size a list before spending a record.
Cons
- No outreach tooling. You pair it with a sender.
- No refund or credit-back for bounced emails. Read
email_statusfirst. - Free is a one-off 1,000 records, not a monthly allowance.
Best for: engineers, agent builders and RevOps teams pulling emails at volume. Rep teams that want a workspace should start with Apollo.
Pricing: Free $0, Solo $97, Agency $497, Platform $1,997 a month (LeadOcean pricing, October 2026).
2. Apollo: best for reps who want database and outreach in one seat

Apollo sells per seat, and each seat comes with a credit allowance. An email costs 1 credit and a phone number costs 8. Credits are pooled across the team and expire at the end of each billing cycle (Apollo API pricing, September 2026).
Every plan includes API access, and Apollo runs an official MCP server at mcp.apollo.io/mcp on any plan, Free included. Enrichment through MCP spends the same credits (Apollo MCP docs, September 2026).
The seat model is what hurts at volume. A Professional seat holds 4,000 credits a month, so 1M lookups need 250 seats at $99. That is $24,750 a month on monthly billing. Billed yearly, the cheapest route is 400 Basic seats at $49, or $19,600 a month. Apollo prints no price for extra credits.
Pros
- A large contact database and outreach tools in one product.
- API and MCP on every plan, including Free.
- Enrichment endpoints allow 1,000 requests a minute on paid plans (Apollo rate limits, September 2026).
Cons
- Credits expire each cycle and do not roll over.
- Cost at volume scales with seats, not with usage.
- Extra credit pricing is not public.
Best for: sales reps and small teams who want to find, sequence and call from one screen.
Pricing: Free $0 with 75 credits, Basic $65, Professional $99, Organization $149 per seat a month; yearly Basic is $49 (Apollo pricing, September 2026).
3. Clay: best for waterfall enrichment inside a table

Clay is a spreadsheet-style workspace that calls many data providers in order until one returns an email. You pay in Data Credits and Actions. Clay's own docs say a fully enriched record costs 6 to 20 Data Credits, plus one Action per enrichment (Clay docs, September 2026).
Its developer platform, with a Public API and a CLI, is on every plan including Free (Clay docs, September 2026). The rate limit is per workspace and Clay publishes no number. There is also an MCP guide (Clay MCP guide, September 2026).
At 1M lookups there is no public price. The largest self-serve tier is 200,000 Actions and 50,000 Data Credits a month, and Actions cannot be bought as top-ups. Above that you talk to sales.
Pros
- Waterfalls and AI research columns (Claygent) on every plan.
- A lookup that returns nothing is charged no credits and no Actions.
- Strong when your workflow lives in tables and CRM syncs.
Cons
- No public rate limit number for the Public API.
- Self-serve tops out far below 1M lookups a month.
- Two meters (Actions and Data Credits) make the bill hard to forecast.
Best for: growth teams who build enrichment logic in a table and send to a CRM.
Pricing: Free $0, Launch $185 a month ($167 billed yearly), Growth $495 a month ($446 billed yearly) (Clay pricing, September 2026).
4. Hunter: best for domain-based email finding at a low unit rate
Hunter finds emails from a domain or a name and verifies them. Email Finder and Domain Search cost 1 credit per email found, and nothing if none is found (Hunter credit help, September 2026).
Its cheapest path at volume is the Data Platform, which sells Search credits for API and bulk use only. 1,000,000 credits cost $6,900, paid once and valid 12 months (Hunter Data Platform, September 2026). The all-in-one plans run $49 to $299 a month, and extra packs cap per purchase.
Hunter has an official remote MCP server on every plan (Hunter MCP, September 2026). Rate limits are per endpoint: Email Finder allows 15 a second. A rate-limited call returns 403, not 429. A 429 means you hit the credit quota.
Pros
- The lowest public price at 1M here after LeadOcean: $6,900 once.
- You pay nothing for an email it does not find.
- Documented per-endpoint limits and an official MCP server.
Cons
- It is a finder. Searching by title and filters is not its strength.
- The error codes are easy to misread (403 for rate limit, 429 for quota).
- Data Platform credits expire after 12 months, and it is API and bulk only.
Best for: teams that already know the company domains and want cheap email lookups.
Pricing: Free $0 with 50 credits, Starter $49, Growth $149, Scale $299 a month; yearly Starter is $34 (Hunter pricing, September 2026).
5. Prospeo: best for verified emails and mobiles on credits
Prospeo charges 1 credit per verified email and 10 per mobile. A miss costs nothing, and neither does re-enriching the same record within 90 days (Prospeo help center, September 2026). Plans are per user: Starter $49 for 2,000 credits, Growth $99 for 5,000, Pro $249 for 15,000.
No single tier reaches 1M. The cheapest public path on monthly billing is 44 Pro seats plus the 350,000-credit add-on, about $14,456 a month. On yearly billing, 3 Pro seats plus the 500,000-credit yearly add-on come to $11,223 once, with credits delivered upfront.
The hosted MCP server at mcp.prospeo.io has 8 tools and uses OAuth 2.0 or an API key (Prospeo MCP docs, September 2026). The Pro Enrich API allows 30 requests a second (Prospeo rate limits, September 2026). Starter and Growth allow 5.
Pros
- Charges only for verified matches.
- Clear credit costs for emails, mobiles and companies.
- Hosted MCP server.
Cons
- Credits expire each cycle, and add-ons are a recurring subscription.
- Starter and Growth rate limits are low for bulk jobs.
Best for: outbound teams that want only verified emails and pay per match.
Pricing: Free $0 with 100 credits, Starter $49, Growth $99, Pro $249 per user a month; yearly Starter is $37 (Prospeo pricing, September 2026).
6. FullEnrich: best for waterfall across 25+ sources
FullEnrich runs a waterfall across 25+ data sources and says it finds about 80% of work emails on average (FullEnrich pricing, September 2026). That is a vendor claim, not our test. A work email costs 1 credit, a personal email 3 and a mobile 10, with nothing charged for a miss.
The API, MCP, search and bulk CSV are on every plan, including the free trial of 50 credits, and users are unlimited. The limit is 60 API calls a minute across Enrich, Reverse Email and Search (FullEnrich volume docs, September 2026). That is one call a second.
There is no public price at 1M. The top monthly tier is 100,000 credits for $3,500 a month, and above that you contact sales. A bulk request takes up to 100 contacts, so 60 calls a minute still moves 6,000 contacts a minute.
Pros
- Waterfall coverage across 25+ sources.
- Credits roll over: 3 months on monthly plans, 12 on yearly.
- Unlimited users on every plan.
Cons
- 60 calls a minute is tight for single-record calls.
- No public price at 1M.
- Personal emails and mobiles cost 3 and 10 credits.
Best for: teams that want a waterfall across many sources on a list of known people.
Pricing: Pro from $29 a month for 500 credits ($26 billed yearly) (FullEnrich pricing, September 2026).

Treat email as one step. A list is only as good as its targeting. Read about predictive lead generation, outbound lead generation and the lead generation funnel before you size a campaign.
Verdict
For API, agent and volume work, LeadOcean wins on cost at 1M: $497 a month, against $6,900 or more for any other tool with a public price. For a rep who wants one screen, Apollo wins. Clay wins for table workflows, Hunter for cheap domain lookups, Prospeo for verified-match pricing and FullEnrich for waterfall coverage. Pick by how you call the data, not by the homepage.
FAQ
What is an AI email lead generation tool?
It finds and verifies business emails for the people you want to reach. The AI part is usually matching, waterfall logic across sources or an agent that calls the tool over MCP. You still choose the targeting.
Which tool is cheapest at 1M emails a month?
LeadOcean Agency at $497 a month, on a fair-use pace and not credits. Of the others, Hunter Data Platform is $6,900 once. Clay and FullEnrich publish no price at 1M.
Do these tools work with ChatGPT or Claude?
Yes. All six run a hosted MCP server. LeadOcean's is at https://api.leadocean.io/mcp and signs in with OAuth 2.1, so no key is pasted.
Can I try LeadOcean without a card?
Yes. Free is $0, no card, 1,000 records for life, with every feature and 5 requests a second. Counting a list costs no records.
Do bounced emails get refunded?
Not at LeadOcean. Read email_status before you send. Check each other vendor's terms before you rely on a refund.
Are the 1M costs real quotes?
No. They are arithmetic from public list prices checked in September 2026. Vendors may quote differently at that volume.
