Hunter.io and Explorium both sell B2B contact data through an API and an MCP server, but they are built for different jobs. Hunter.io finds and verifies work emails, one name and domain at a time. Explorium is a larger data platform with company search, events and intent, sold in prepaid credits.

Hunter is the cheaper way to get an email. Explorium is the wider source of data. Neither one has a flat price.

Verdict

  • Pick Hunter.io if the job is finding and verifying work emails, and you want to pay only when an address is found. It publishes a price at every volume, down to $6,900 for 1M lookups.
  • Pick Explorium if you need company data, hiring and funding events, intent filters and phone numbers in one vendor. Expect to pay several times more per email.
  • Pick neither if you pull millions of records a month through an API and want one flat price. LeadOcean is one option: Pro is $499 a month.

Data and coverage

Hunter is an email index and Explorium is a profile and company graph. Hunter's homepage cites 150,430,313 verified email addresses. Explorium claims 767M+ professional profiles and 146M+ business entities.

Do not compare those two numbers directly. A profile is not a mailable contact, and Explorium publishes no count of emails or phones. Hunter's figure is emails only.

Email status differs. Hunter verifies each address it finds and returns valid, accept_all or unknown, with a score for accept-all addresses (Hunter API docs, October 2026). Explorium returns valid, invalid or catch-all beside a professional email (Explorium docs, October 2026).

Phones are thin on both sides. Hunter returns a phone number only when one exists for the person, and publishes no count. Explorium sells phones as a 5-credit lookup and names no country limit.

Scope is the larger gap. Explorium adds business enrichments, event tracking and Bombora intent filters. Hunter adds Domain Search, a verifier and outreach tools inside the same product.

Run the same 500 people through both before you commit. Compare find rate and email status.

API and developer experience

Hunter is one call per email. Explorium is two: match a person to a prospect_id, then enrich that ID.

Hunter's Email Finder takes a domain and a name. This is the request from its docs, with a placeholder person. A found email costs 1 credit and a miss costs nothing (Hunter API docs, October 2026).

bash
curl "https://api.hunter.io/v2/email-finder?domain=acme.com&first_name=Jane&last_name=Doe" \
  -H "X-API-KEY: $HUNTER_API_KEY"

Explorium first matches the person. Its match endpoint accepts a LinkedIn URL, an email, a phone number, or a full name with a company name (Explorium docs, October 2026).

bash
curl -X POST "https://api.explorium.ai/v2/prospects/match" \
  -H "api_key: $EXPLORIUM_API_KEY" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"prospects_to_match": [{"full_name": "Jane Doe", "company_name": "Acme"}]}'

The enrich call then takes the returned ID. Email only is 2 credits (Explorium docs, October 2026).

bash
curl -X POST "https://api.explorium.ai/v2/prospects/contact_information/enrich" \
  -H "api_key: $EXPLORIUM_API_KEY" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"prospect_id": "PROSPECT_ID_FROM_MATCH", "parameters": {"contact_types": ["email"]}}'

Rate limits use different units. Hunter sets them per endpoint: 15 a second and 500 a minute on Email Finder. A rate-limited call gets a 403, and a 429 means you hit your credit quota (Hunter API docs, September 2026).

Explorium allows 200 queries a minute per key, and a bulk call of 50 IDs uses 50. Going over returns a 429 with a 60-second retry (Explorium docs, October 2026).

Both MCP servers return data. Hunter's is included in every plan and spends plan credits. Explorium's has 11 tools, and its statistics tools are free, so you can size an audience before you fetch (Explorium MCP docs, October 2026).

Pricing

Hunter sells one credit per found email and Explorium sells credits at 2 to 5 per contact lookup. Hunter is cheaper per email at every volume we priced.

Hunter plans, billed monthly, are Starter $49 for 2,000 credits, Growth $149 for 10,000 and Scale $299 for 25,000. Billed yearly they are $34, $104 and $209 a month (Hunter pricing, September 2026). Data Platform sells Search credits in one-off packs for API and bulk use, valid 12 months (Hunter Data Platform, September 2026).

Explorium sells Lite at $29.99 for 500 credits, Starter $149.99 for 5K, Growth $749.99 for 30K and Scale $7,499.99 for 500K. Rates run from $0.06 to $0.015 a credit, and Enterprise is custom (Explorium pricing, October 2026).

At 10,000 records a month

Hunter: 10,000 emails is 10,000 credits, so Growth fits exactly. That is $149 a month, or $104 a month billed yearly. A lookup that finds nothing costs no credit, and a repeat lookup in the same period is free.

Explorium: 10,000 emails is 10,000 x 2 = 20,000 credits. Four Starter packs give 20,000, so 4 x $149.99 = $599.96. With phones at 5 credits, 50,000 credits is one Growth pack plus four Starter packs: $749.99 + $599.96 = $1,349.95.

Those Explorium figures are a floor. The docs do not price the match step, and a pack is a one-off purchase.

At 1M records a month

Hunter: 1M work emails is 1,000,000 Search credits. At the Data Platform rate of $0.0069, that is $6,900, paid once and valid 12 months (Hunter Data Platform, September 2026). The all-in-one route costs more: Scale at $299 plus 975,000 credits in packs comes to about $19,799 (Hunter help center, September 2026).

Explorium: 1M work emails is 2,000,000 credits. At Scale, 2,000,000 / 500,000 = 4 packs, and 4 x $7,499.99 = $29,999.96. With phones, 5,000,000 credits is 10 packs, or $74,999.90 (Explorium pricing, October 2026).

Explorium is about 4.3 times Hunter for the same email count, at list price. Enterprise is a negotiated quote with volume discounts, so a real Explorium price could be lower. Hunter above 1,000,000 credits is custom too.

At 1M, rate limits also set the schedule. Hunter's 500 a minute on Email Finder is 2,000 minutes, about 33 hours. Explorium's 200 queries a minute is 10,000 minutes, nearly 7 days, if each person needs a match query and an enrich query.

Where Hunter.io wins

  • Price per email. $0.0069 a credit at 1M, and Starter is $34 a month billed yearly. Explorium's cheapest rate is $0.015 a credit, at 2 credits per email.
  • You pay for hits. Email Finder charges no credit when it finds nothing. Explorium does not say whether a miss costs credits.
  • One call. A name and a domain return a verified address. No match step.
  • Verification built in. Every found email is verified, and the standalone verifier costs half a credit.
  • A recurring free plan and outreach in the same product. Hunter's Free plan renews 50 credits every month, and its homepage lists outreach campaigns next to the finder (Hunter, October 2026).

Where Explorium wins

  • Scope. Company data, with firmographics, technology usage and financial metrics, sits beside the prospect data. Hunter is centered on emails.
  • Events and intent. Funding rounds, hiring, mergers and role changes, with Bombora intent filters at 2 credits per result (Explorium MCP docs, October 2026).
  • Phones with no stated country limit. Hunter publishes no phone count at all.
  • Free sizing. The statistics tools on the MCP server cost nothing.
  • Waterfall enrichment. The async contact endpoint retries prospects it cannot enrich against an external provider (Explorium docs, October 2026).

If you need volume through an API

We build LeadOcean, so weigh this section accordingly. LeadOcean holds 693M people and 63M companies, and you reach them over REST and a 12-tool MCP server with OAuth sign-in. Free is 1,000 records, one-off, with no card. Pro is $499 a month, flat, with unlimited searches and lookups and 100 requests per second per key (LeadOcean pricing, September 2026).

For bulk work, POST /v1/exports returns up to 50,000 rows per request, and the app has an Exports page with a CSV download (LeadOcean exports docs, September 2026). A very large month is paced down rather than cut off. LeadOcean has fewer companies than Explorium and no event stream. See the Hunter.io alternative page for a line-by-line version.
