People Data Labs (PDL) and BetterContact both sell B2B contact data, but they find it in opposite ways. PDL is one large dataset behind a data API, priced per matched profile. BetterContact is a waterfall that asks 20+ providers for each email or mobile, priced per valid result.

Verdict

  • Pick People Data Labs if you are a developer who needs full profiles from one dataset, fast synchronous lookups, or licensed bulk files. You pay per match, and a miss is free.
  • Pick BetterContact if you have a list of named people and want the highest find rate on valid work emails and mobiles. Prices are public from $15 a month, and you pay only for valid results.
  • Pick neither if you need volume through an API at a price you can read. Neither has a public 1M price. LeadOcean is one option: Pro is $499 a month, flat.

Data and coverage

PDL lists 2.47B person profiles and 76.6M companies. BetterContact owns no contact dataset. It routes each lead through 20+ providers and returns what the waterfall finds (BetterContact, September 2026).

So the two numbers do not compare. PDL tells you how big its database is. BetterContact tells you its find rate is high, but publishes no email or phone count.

PDL is explicit about contact coverage. Its email dataset holds 592M profiles, its mobile dataset 470M, and its any-phone dataset 764M (PDL datasets, September 2026). A profile in PDL also carries job history, location and company fields.

BetterContact sells a contact point, not a profile. You send a name and a company domain, and it returns a work email, a mobile, or both. Extra profile enrichment is a separate option that needs a LinkedIn URL (BetterContact docs, September 2026).

For search, BetterContact has a Lead Finder that returns at most 200 leads per request (BetterContact docs, September 2026). PDL has Person Search, but it is limited to 10 requests a minute by default.

Test on your own list. Run the same 500 people through both, but not on the free plans alone. PDL's Free plan obscures contact data, so you see emails and phones only on a paid plan. BetterContact's 50 free credits show real results, but that is 50 emails or 5 mobiles.

API and developer experience

Both are REST APIs with a key in a header. The shape differs. PDL answers one person per call, in the same response. BetterContact takes a batch, answers later, and you collect the result.

PDL sends the key in the X-Api-Key header to GET /v5/person/enrich. A match returns 200 and is billed. A miss returns 404 and is not (PDL docs, September 2026).

bash
curl -G "https://api.peopledatalabs.com/v5/person/enrich" \
  -H "X-Api-Key: $PDL_API_KEY" \
  --data-urlencode "profile=https://linkedin.com/in/jane-doe"

BetterContact uses the X-API-Key header and a POST to /async. A 201 means the batch was accepted, not enriched. You keep the returned id, then call GET /async/{request_id} or give a webhook URL (BetterContact docs, September 2026).

bash
curl -X POST "https://app.bettercontact.rocks/api/v2/async" \
  -H "X-API-Key: $BETTERCONTACT_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "data": [{
      "first_name": "Jane",
      "last_name": "Doe",
      "company_domain": "acme.com"
    }],
    "enrich_email_address": true
  }'

Poll on status, not on the HTTP code. While the job runs, the result endpoint answers 202 with no data. Only status: "terminated" means the data is there (BetterContact docs, September 2026). Submissions are not idempotent, so a blind retry spends credits twice.

Input differs too. PDL matches on a profile URL, email, phone, name plus location or its own pdl_id. BetterContact needs a first name, a last name and a company or domain. It asks for a LinkedIn URL whenever you request a phone.

Rate limits shape how each scales. PDL limits are per key, in a fixed one-minute window, and separate for each endpoint. Enrichment allows 1,000 a minute on paid plans, and Person Search only 10 (PDL usage limits, September 2026).

BetterContact allows 200 requests a minute on Pro, counted across all endpoints. With 100 leads per call, that is up to 20,000 leads a minute in theory. Over the limit you get a 429 and a body that reads "Retry later" (BetterContact docs, September 2026).

On MCP, neither has an official server. PDL has community wrappers that you host yourself. BetterContact lists no MCP endpoint in its docs index, so an agent needs your own glue code or a workflow tool.

Pricing

PDL charges one credit per matched profile. BetterContact charges one credit per valid email and ten per valid mobile. To compare them, convert both to cost per record.

At 10,000 records a month

For PDL, 10,000 profiles is 10,000 credits. PDL says Pro profiles cost about $0.20 to $0.28 each, depending on volume and plan. So 10,000 x $0.20 = $2,000 and 10,000 x $0.28 = $2,800 (PDL blog, September 2026). The exact rate at 10,000 credits sits behind PDL's sign-in.

For BetterContact, 10,000 valid work emails is 10,000 credits. The 10,000-credit Pro step is $399 a month, which is $0.0399 a credit, or about $332.50 a month billed yearly (BetterContact pricing, September 2026). The yearly figure follows the page's "2 months free" rule.

Mobiles change the math. A mobile is 10 credits, so 10,000 mobiles is 100,000 credits. That is above the top public step of 50,000. The API docs also say phone enrichment needs a phone add-on, and no add-on price is published (BetterContact docs, September 2026).

The unit matters. A PDL credit returns a full profile. A BetterContact credit returns one valid email, and a contact with an email and a mobile costs 11 credits.

At 1M records a month

PDL: no public 1M price. Self-serve Pro is meant for volumes below roughly 100,000 profiles, and above that PDL quotes Enterprise only. Its docs and blog disagree on whether that line is per month or per year (PDL blog, September 2026).

BetterContact: no public 1M price. 1,000,000 work emails needs 1,000,000 credits. The top public step covers 50,000 credits for $1,999 a month, which is 5% of the volume. Enterprise starts at $799 a month on a custom quote (BetterContact pricing, September 2026).

Do not multiply either rate out to 1M and call it a quote. Ask both for a price at your volume.

Where People Data Labs wins

  • A real dataset. 2.47B profiles, 592M with an email and 764M with any phone, by PDL's own stats.
  • Synchronous enrichment. One call, one response, 1,000 calls a minute on paid plans.
  • Bulk files. An annual Data License delivers person data to S3, GCP or Azure (PDL docs, September 2026).
  • Profile depth. One credit returns the whole profile, not a single field.

Where BetterContact wins

  • Find rate on a list you own. A waterfall asks the next provider when the first misses, so it can reach people a single database lacks.
  • Pay only for valid results. Unused credits roll over, capped at twice the plan (BetterContact pricing, September 2026).
  • Low entry price. Starter is $15 a month and Pro starts at $49. PDL Pro starts at $98, and its Free plan hides the data you came for.
  • No-code reach. It lists 28 native integrations, so a rep can use it without writing code (BetterContact, September 2026).

If you need volume through an API

We build LeadOcean, so weigh this section accordingly. LeadOcean holds 693M people and 63M companies, and you reach them over REST and MCP. Free is 1,000 records, one-off, with no card. Pro is $499 a month, flat, with unlimited searches and lookups and a limit of 100 requests per second per key (LeadOcean pricing, September 2026).

For bulk work, POST /v1/exports returns up to 50,000 rows per request. The app also has an Exports page with a filter builder, column picker, price preview and CSV download (LeadOcean exports docs, September 2026). There is no sequencer, dialer or CRM. See the PDL alternative page for a line-by-line version.

FAQ

Does People Data Labs or BetterContact have an MCP server?

Neither has an official one that we could find. PDL lists none in its docs, llms.txt or GitHub organization, and only community servers exist. BetterContact lists none in its docs index.

Which has more contacts, People Data Labs or BetterContact?

PDL, by its own count. It lists 2.47B person profiles and 592M with an email. BetterContact owns no dataset and publishes no email or phone count, so test it on your own list.

Is BetterContact cheaper than People Data Labs?

At small volume, yes. At 10,000 work emails, BetterContact Pro is $399 a month. PDL's published range of $0.20 to $0.28 a profile gives $2,000 to $2,800. A PDL credit returns a full profile, though, and a BetterContact mobile costs 10 credits.

Which one can do 1M records a month?

Neither publishes a simple answer. PDL sends that volume to Enterprise with no public price. BetterContact tops out at 50,000 credits for $1,999 a month, then says contact sales. Ask both for a quote at your volume.

Which is faster through the API?

PDL on enrichment. It allows 1,000 requests a minute on paid plans and answers in the same response. BetterContact takes up to 100 leads per call and returns results by webhook or poll.

How does LeadOcean compare with these two?

LeadOcean is a data API and MCP server with one flat price, $499 a month on Pro. It is not a waterfall. Read the PDL vs Wiza, PDL vs Snov.io and PDL vs Kaspr comparisons, and PDL alternatives.
