Enrichment is the process of adding missing fields to a record you already hold, such as a job title, company size or work email, by matching it against another data source.
You start with an identifier: an email, a LinkedIn URL or a company domain. The data source returns the fields attached to that identifier. The result is the same lead with more columns filled in.
Why it matters for outbound
Outbound runs on fields you rarely have at the moment a lead appears. A form fill gives you an email and a name. It does not tell you the title, the industry or whether the company is a fit.
Enrichment closes that gap. You can route a lead to the right rep, score it against your ICP and write a message that names the right role. Without it, reps research by hand or send generic copy.
Enrichment also decays. People change jobs, so a record that was right last year can be wrong now. Run it again before a campaign, not only when a lead is created. The glossary entry on B2B data erosion explains how fast that happens.
Example
A lead signs up with only an email address: jane.doe@acme.com. Your CRM has no title and no company details.
You send that email to an enrichment endpoint. The response comes back with the fields held for that person.
| Field | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| jane.doe@acme.com | jane.doe@acme.com | |
| Name | (empty) | Jane Doe |
| Job title | (empty) | VP Sales |
| Company | (empty) | Acme |
| Phone | (empty) | +1 415 555 0133 |
The values are placeholders. A real call returns whatever the source holds, and a field can stay empty if the source has nothing.
In LeadOcean data
LeadOcean has two enrich endpoints, authenticated with the x-api-key header:
POST /v1/people/enrichtakes exactly one oflinkedin_url,email,phoneorperson_id. Setreveal_emailtotrueto get the address back. It defaults tofalse.POST /v1/companies/enrichreturns the company record.
There is no name plus domain lookup. To find a person at a company, search by domain first, then enrich by person_id. A person we hold nothing for returns a 404 and costs nothing. Phones come back in contact_phones[].phone, and GET /v2/people/phone returns every number held for a person (openapi.json, September 2026).
The same lookup is available from an AI assistant through the hosted MCP server, using the get_lead and get_company tools. Each person or company returned counts as one record. The free plan gives 1,000 records, one-off, with no card, and Pro is $499 a month. See /pricing.
