Teams leave BuiltWith for four reasons: the price of entry, the API limits, the credit meter and the missing people data. The cheapest paid plan is Basic at $295 a month, and Pro is $495 (BuiltWith plans, October 2026). The API runs at 10 requests a second and 8 at once. A dedicated endpoint is the only way past that (BuiltWith API reference, October 2026).
The Lists API, which pulls every site on a technology, needs a subscription and shows no credit price. BuiltWith also lists contacts found on sites, with EU and California personal data removed. It is not a verified-email database.
This page ranks six alternatives for API and volume buyers. Some replace the technology data. One adds the people. For the full BuiltWith price ladder, read BuiltWith pricing.

What we evaluated
- Technology data. Does the tool tell you what a company or site runs, and can you filter by it?
- People. Can you get decision-makers and contact data at the companies you find?
- API limits. Rate limit, batch size and bulk export.
- Agent access. Is there a hosted MCP server that returns data?
- Price at 1M records a month. Monthly list price first, billed-yearly figure after it, with a source and the month checked.
1. LeadOcean: best for contacts at companies that use a technology
LeadOcean is a people and company database with a technology filter. POST /v1/people/search and POST /v1/companies/search both take technologies (names) and technologyCategories (105 of them, such as CRM or Analytics). Add title, level, country and size to get the people at those companies. It covers 693M people and 63M companies through REST and a hosted MCP server with 12 tools.
Technology data comes from crawled sites. The filter covers about 7.8M crawled sites, so it is narrower than a pure technographics vendor. It tells you a company runs a CRM or an analytics tool. It does not give a per-domain history or a trend line.
The reason to pick it is the bill and the output. Pro is $499 a month with unlimited searches, enrichments and lookups, 100 requests per second per key and 5 API keys. There are no credits, so 1M rows costs the same as 10k. It ranks first here because the page is written for readers who pull data in code or through an agent and want people, not reports.
Pros
- Filters people by technology, title, level and country in one call.
- One flat price. No credits, no per-record price, no overage invoice.
- 100 requests per second per key, on every plan.
- Hosted MCP server with OAuth sign-in and 12 tools. Counting an audience is free.
- Free plan: 1,000 records, no card, same API and MCP server as Pro.
Cons
- No per-domain technology history and no trend reports.
- Technology data covers about 7.8M crawled sites, not the whole database.
- Past the fair-usage line, a very large month is paced down to one request a minute. One email to support raises the headroom.
- The app is an Exports page, not a report builder or a CRM.
Best for: engineers, RevOps and agents that need contacts at companies filtered by technology, at a fixed monthly bill.
Pricing: Free is 1,000 records one-off. Pro is $499 a month, flat. See LeadOcean pricing, checked September 2026.
2. TheirStack: best for companies by technology and hiring signals
TheirStack finds companies by the technologies they use and the jobs they post. Every API plan includes the Job Search, Company Search and Technographics endpoints, plus webhooks and an MCP server (TheirStack plans, September 2026). It is the closest like-for-like swap for a BuiltWith list pull.
The meter is the catch. A job costs 1 API credit, and a company or a full tech stack costs 3 (TheirStack credits docs, September 2026). So 1M tech stacks is 3M credits, and TheirStack lists no 3M tier. We found no person or contact records.
Paid accounts run at 4 requests a second, and credits expire 12 months after purchase (TheirStack rate limit docs, September 2026). The hosted MCP server at api.theirstack.com/mcp signs in with OAuth or an API key. It spends credits at the API rate (TheirStack MCP docs, September 2026). See TheirStack alternatives.
Pros
- Technographics, Company Search and Job Search in every API plan.
- A published price ladder from $49 to $5,500 a month.
- Free plan with 200 API credits and 50 company credits a month.
- Hosted MCP server with OAuth and API-key sign-in.
Cons
- A company or tech stack costs 3 credits, three times a job.
- 4 requests a second on paid plans.
- No people or contact records that we found.
- Credits are prepaid and expire after 12 months.
Best for: teams that build lists from technology plus hiring signals and have a separate contact source.
Pricing: Free is 200 API credits and 50 company credits a month. API plans run from $49 a month for 1,500 credits to $5,500 for 5,000,000. The pricing page shows monthly figures only, with no billed-yearly figure (TheirStack pricing, September 2026). 1M tech stacks is 3M credits and no tier fits, so the next published tier is API 5M at $5,500.
3. Wappalyzer: best for cheap cached technology lookups
Wappalyzer detects the technologies on a website, and it is the simplest route to a lookup API. A cached lookup is 1 credit a URL, and a live recursive lookup is 5. Lookup takes up to 10 URLs per request (Wappalyzer lookup docs, September 2026).
The API starts at Business. Pro at $250 a month includes no API credits, so API buyers start at $450. Business includes 20,000 credits, and they expire after 60 days (Wappalyzer pricing, September 2026).
Wappalyzer adds lead lists built on a technology, with emails and phones scraped from public pages. It gives no accuracy promise on those. The hosted MCP server is read-only with three tools, on Business and above (Wappalyzer MCP docs, September 2026). See Wappalyzer alternatives for who else competes here.
Pros
- Simple cached lookup API at 1 credit a URL.
- Free account with 50 technology lookups a month.
- Lead lists by technology, finalized at 1 credit a website.
- Read-only MCP server with three tools.
Cons
- The API needs Business at $450 a month. Pro has none.
- Included credits expire after 60 days.
- 10 requests a second, and no public price at 1M.
- Contact data is as-is, with no verified people.
Best for: developers who need to detect the technologies on a list of domains by API.
Pricing: Pro $250, Business $450 and Enterprise $850+ a month, or $2,500, $4,500 and $8,500+ billed yearly (Wappalyzer pricing, September 2026). Enterprise starts at 200,000+ credits. Wappalyzer publishes no 1M price.
4. Crustdata: best for tech stacks and people from one API

Crustdata is the closest single-vendor swap if you also want people. Technographics sits on the existing Company and Job APIs. Company Search filters by technology, and Company Enrich returns the detected stack (Crustdata technographics docs, September 2026).
It is a beta, gated add-on. Access needs field-level permission on your account. Enrich adds 2 credits per company on top of the base 2. A technographics filter adds 1 credit per search result on top of 0.03 (Crustdata pricing docs, September 2026).
Crustdata runs a hosted MCP server at install.crustdata.com/mcp, with OAuth for interactive clients and an API key for code (Crustdata MCP docs, September 2026). The weak point is volume. Default limits are 15 requests a minute on enrich and 30 on search (Crustdata rate limits, September 2026). See Crustdata alternatives.
Pros
- Tech stack, job postings and people in one API.
- Company Search filters by technology.
- Hosted MCP server with OAuth and API-key sign-in.
- Batch person enrich takes up to 10,000 identifiers a job.
Cons
- Technographics is a beta add-on that needs field-level permission.
- No dollar price per credit and no plan list on the pricing page.
- Default limits of 15 requests a minute on enrich and 30 on search.
- The contact endpoints need an enterprise plan.
Best for: teams that want stack and people data from one vendor and can negotiate a contract.
Pricing: the pricing page lists no plans or dollar prices. A Crustdata blog post reports a lowest tier from $95 a month (Crustdata pricing, September 2026; Crustdata blog, September 2026). 1M tech stacks is 4,000,000 credits (2 base plus 2 for technographics). There is no public price per credit, so there is no public 1M price (Crustdata docs, September 2026).
5. Coresignal: best for company records with dated technology fields

Coresignal is the volume pick if you want a company database with technology as a field. Its homepage claims 70M+ company records and 907M+ employee records (Coresignal, September 2026). Search by filter is free (Coresignal docs, September 2026).
The Clean Company API returns a technologies array, with the date each technology was first and last verified (Coresignal docs, September 2026). That is the nearest thing here to BuiltWith's history. A company record costs 10 credits, so tech lookups are not cheap.
Plans follow a published ladder. Rate limits rise with the plan, from 5 requests a second on Starter to 100 on Scale (Coresignal rate limits, September 2026). The hosted MCP server has 5 tools and OAuth 2.1 sign-in (Coresignal MCP docs, September 2026). See Coresignal alternatives.
Pros
- Tech stack with first and last verified dates per technology.
- A published plan ladder from $49 to $5,000 a month.
- Bulk Collect takes up to 10,000 records per request.
- Search by filter is free.
Cons
- A company record is 10 credits, so tech-stack volume gets expensive.
- Credits reset each cycle on plans below Premium.
- Rate limits start at 5 requests a second.
- Contact enrichment is 20 credits a call, and the API starts at Pro.
Best for: data teams that pull company records at volume and want dated technology fields.
Pricing: monthly list is Mini $49, Starter $199, Pro $499, Growth $1,000, Premium $1,500, Scale $3,000 and Elite $5,000. Billed yearly, Starter is $2,149 and Elite is $54,000 (Coresignal pricing, September 2026). 1M company records is 10,000,000 credits, the Elite allowance at $5,000 list. The pricing page marks Premium, Scale and Elite as contact sales, so expect a sales call at that volume.
6. Apollo: best for technology search plus contacts, priced per seat

Apollo is a sales platform with a technology filter in its API. Organization Search finds companies by the technologies they use, across 1,500+ supported technologies. Apollo says it calculates that data from multiple sources (Apollo organization search docs, October 2026). Its API docs describe over 240 million contacts and 30 million companies.
Credits are the meter. Organization Search costs 1 credit per page of up to 100 results, and organization enrichment costs 1 credit per company (Apollo API pricing, October 2026). Each search returns at most 50,000 records, so a big pull needs many narrow queries.
Every plan includes API access. Paid plans get 200 search requests a minute and 50,000 a day (Apollo rate limits, September 2026). Apollo runs an official MCP server at mcp.apollo.io/mcp on any plan, including Free (Apollo MCP docs, September 2026). See Apollo alternatives.
Pros
- Technology search across 1,500+ technologies, with contacts in the same account.
- Free plan with API access and MCP.
- Organization search is 1 credit per page, not per company.
- Hosted MCP server with OAuth or an API key.
Cons
- Priced per seat, and credits expire at the end of each billing cycle.
- A search returns at most 50,000 records.
- We found no per-domain technology history in the docs.
- Phone numbers cost 8 credits each.
Best for: sales teams that want technology-based account lists and contacts in one seat-priced tool.
Pricing: per seat a month, billed monthly: Free $0 with 75 credits, Basic $65 with 2,500, Professional $99 with 4,000 and Organization $149 with 6,000 (minimum 3 seats). Billed yearly it is $49, $79 and $119 per seat a month (Apollo pricing, September 2026). There is no public 1M price for company tech data. 1M work-email lookups is 1,000,000 credits, or $24,750 a month at list on 250 Professional seats, a derived figure. Apollo publishes no price for extra credits.

FAQ
What is the best BuiltWith alternative?
It depends on the job. For contacts at companies that use a technology, LeadOcean. For companies by technology and hiring signals, TheirStack. For a plain lookup API, Wappalyzer.
Is there a free alternative to BuiltWith?
Several have free tiers. LeadOcean gives 1,000 records one-off with no card. Wappalyzer gives 50 lookups a month. TheirStack gives 200 API credits and Apollo gives 75 credits a month (Wappalyzer pricing, September 2026; TheirStack plans, September 2026; Apollo pricing, September 2026). BuiltWith's own free tier is single-site lookups (BuiltWith plans, October 2026).
Does BuiltWith have an API and an MCP server?
Yes to both. The API allows 10 requests a second and 8 at once. The MCP endpoint takes your API key as a Bearer token (BuiltWith API reference, October 2026). Lists and keyword search need a subscription.
Which alternative finds companies by technology and returns contacts?
LeadOcean filters people by technology name or category in one search, then returns emails and phones through enrich or an export. Apollo does it on a per-seat plan. TheirStack, Wappalyzer and Coresignal return the company side, and Crustdata's contact endpoints need an enterprise plan.
Can an alternative match BuiltWith's technology history?
We found none that documents 18+ years of trend history. Coresignal's technologies array carries first and last verified dates per technology. LeadOcean, Wappalyzer and Apollo return the current stack.
How much does 1M records a month cost?
LeadOcean is $499 a month flat. Coresignal's Elite allowance covers 1M company records at $5,000 list, through sales. BuiltWith publishes no 1M price. Team at $995 a month lists 1.2M API credits, and the plans page does not say whether they renew each month (BuiltWith plans, October 2026).
