Cognism is a sales intelligence platform that sells phone-verified mobiles by quote. AI-Ark is a B2B database that sells credits at public rates. Pick Cognism to call Europe. Pick AI-Ark to build lists and pre-verified email exports in volume. Neither prints a price at 1M records.
Verdict
- Pick Cognism if your reps dial mobiles, you sell into Europe, and you want intent data and Do Not Call screening inside one platform. You will pay by quote.
- Pick AI-Ark if you build outbound lists, want lookalike company search and emails checked at export, and want to read a rate before any sales call.
- Pick neither if you pull millions of records in code and want one flat bill. Both bill by the credit. LeadOcean is $499 a month flat for REST and MCP, with no dialer and no app for reps.

Data and coverage
Neither vendor gives you a clean number to compare. Cognism says only "hundreds of millions" of profiles and adds that it does not usually make general coverage claims (Cognism FAQ, September 2026). AI-Ark states 400M+ people and 70M+ companies, with a 30-day refresh cycle (AI-Ark docs, September 2026). Both are vendor claims. Test both on your own filters. Pull 500 records of the same persona from each, then compare how many have a usable email and phone.
Phones are where they differ most. Cognism claims over 10M phone-verified contacts, on-demand verification in under 48 hours, and Do Not Call cross-referencing in 15 territories (Cognism Diamond Data, September 2026). That is a smaller set, built for dialing. AI-Ark publishes no phone count. It sells a mobile finder at 5 credits per number found, and a miss returns a 404 with no charge (AI-Ark docs, September 2026).
Emails are the reverse. AI-Ark verifies every email through BounceBan as it is returned (AI-Ark docs, September 2026). Cognism publishes no email count or verification claim on the pages we checked.
Filters differ in shape. Cognism's people search has 13 person fields and 21 company fields, 34 in all, with intent signals on Pro (Cognism API reference, September 2026; Cognism pricing, September 2026). AI-Ark adds SMART text matching, where "creative director" also finds "art director", and lookalike search from up to 5 seed companies (AI-Ark docs, September 2026).
API and developer experience
Both have a REST API and an MCP server. Access works differently. Cognism's API and MCP server are new capabilities on its newer packages, so an existing customer asks the account team to upgrade (Cognism docs, September 2026). AI-Ark lists API access on every plan, and you create a key in its dashboard (AI-Ark pricing, September 2026).
Auth is heavier on Cognism. You create a client ID and secret under Settings, M2M Connect, then exchange them for a bearer token that lasts 20 minutes (Cognism docs, September 2026). AI-Ark takes one static key in an X-TOKEN header.
Cognism's first request from its docs counts matching companies. Company calls never use credits. The docs disagree on search tokens: the Credits page says a count costs 1 token, while the Introduction says counts are free (Cognism docs, September 2026; Cognism credits, September 2026).
curl --request POST \
--url 'https://api.cognism.com/companies/filter/count' \
--header "Authorization: Bearer $COGNISM_ACCESS_TOKEN" \
--header 'Content-Type: application/json' \
--data '{
"company": {
"industry": { "include": ["Software"] },
"location": { "type": "hq", "country": { "include": ["United Kingdom"] } },
"headcount": { "gte": 200, "lte": 1000 }
}
}'AI-Ark's first request from its docs is a company search. It costs 0.1 credit per company returned, so 10 results is 1 credit (AI-Ark docs, September 2026).
curl --request POST \
--url 'https://api.ai-ark.com/api/developer-portal/v1/companies' \
--header "X-TOKEN: $AIARK_API_KEY" \
--header 'Content-Type: application/json' \
--data '{
"account": {
"industries": { "any": { "include": { "mode": "SMART", "content": ["software development"] } } },
"location": { "any": { "include": ["Germany"] } },
"employeeSize": { "type": "RANGE", "range": [{ "start": 51, "end": 200 }] }
},
"page": 0,
"size": 10
}'Limits shape a bulk job. Cognism returns 1 to 100 records a page and allows 500 requests a minute. So 1M records is 10,000 search calls, about 20 minutes of calls (Cognism rate limits, September 2026). AI-Ark returns up to 100 per call at 5 requests a second, but one search retrieves at most 10,000 records. Past that you re-run with exclusion lists, which expire after 24 hours (AI-Ark docs, September 2026).
Pricing
Cognism publishes no dollar price. Its page lists Standard and Pro, 5 seats each, and says pricing is tailored by product, team setup and usage. A credit is one revealed contact, each seat includes an allocation, and the size is not published (Cognism pricing, September 2026).
AI-Ark publishes more, but not everything. The Free plan is 100 credits a month. The Usage-based plan is $49 a month for 5,000 credits, and annual billing takes 20% off. Plans above 30,000 credits list $2 to $4 per 1,000 credits, while Scale (450K+ credits) and Enterprise carry no price (AI-Ark pricing, September 2026).
Here is the worked example for 10,000 and 1M records a month, each with a work email.
| Records a month | Cognism | AI-Ark |
|---|---|---|
| 10,000 | 10,000 credits. No public price | 10,000 credits. Above the $49 plan's 5,000. No public price between 5,000 and 30,000 credits |
| 1M | 1,000,000 credits. No public 1M price | 1,000,000 credits. Above Scale's 450K. No public 1M price |
Arithmetic: Cognism charges 1 credit per revealed contact. AI-Ark charges 0.5 credit for the profile plus 0.5 for a found email, so 1 credit per person with an email (AI-Ark pricing, September 2026). Adding a mobile number costs AI-Ark 5 more credits, so 1M people with a phone is 6,000,000 credits. Neither page gives a rate for that volume, so we do not multiply one out. Ask both for a quote.
The credit rules also change what you really pay. Cognism says viewing a contact you already revealed is free, and a credit is used again only if that contact changes jobs. The same credits cover the platform, Enrich and the API (Cognism pricing, September 2026). AI-Ark says you pay once for any contact, and re-exporting one you own is free. Unused credits roll over up to a 2x cap (AI-Ark pricing, September 2026). If you re-pull the same accounts every month, both rules lower the real bill.
Seats matter on Cognism. Standard and Pro each include 5 seats, so a pipeline with no human users still sits inside a seat-based package. AI-Ark Starter allows up to 3 seats and Scale 10, and the API is on every plan.
Where Cognism wins
Cognism wins on phones and Do Not Call screening. It claims 10M+ phone-verified contacts and Do Not Call cross-referencing in 15 territories (Cognism Diamond Data, September 2026). For a team that dials Europe, that is the reason to pay.
It also ships more of a sales platform. Pro adds buying-intent prioritisation through Bombora Company Surge, with up to 12 topics from over 11,000 (Cognism pricing, September 2026). Search and cursor pagination reach 100,000 records per journey, ten times AI-Ark's search cap.
Where AI-Ark wins
AI-Ark wins on price visibility and list building. You can read the free plan, the $49 plan and the $2 to $4 per 1,000 range before you sign up (AI-Ark pricing, September 2026). Cognism shows no number.
It also wins on discovery. Lookalike search, SMART text matching and a company export at 0.1 credit make account lists cheap to build (AI-Ark docs, September 2026). Emails are checked at export, and unused credits roll over up to 2x the monthly allowance (AI-Ark pricing, September 2026). Access is also simpler: one key, no package check, and a Free plan with API access.
If you need volume through an API
Neither tool fits a pipeline that pulls millions of records, because both bill by the credit and neither prints a 1M price. LeadOcean is a data API with a hosted MCP server and a flat price. Free gives 1,000 records one-off with no card. Pro is $499 a month flat, with 100 requests per second per key and POST /v1/exports returning up to 50,000 rows per request. It holds 693M people and 63M companies behind REST and MCP (pricing).
LeadOcean has no dialer, no phone verification and no app for reps. It is the data layer only. Keep Cognism for the dial list if your reps need verified mobiles.
FAQ
Is Cognism or AI-Ark cheaper?
AI-Ark is the only one with public numbers. It lists $49 a month for 5,000 credits and $2 to $4 per 1,000 above 30,000 credits (AI-Ark pricing, September 2026). Cognism publishes no price (Cognism pricing, September 2026). Get a quote from each at your volume.
Which has the bigger database?
AI-Ark states 400M+ people and 70M+ companies. Cognism says "hundreds of millions" of profiles and gives no split (Cognism FAQ, September 2026). The two cannot be compared exactly. Run both on your target filters.
Do both have an MCP server?
Yes. Cognism's is at mcp.cognism.com/mcp with 15 tools and OAuth sign-in (Cognism MCP docs, September 2026). AI-Ark's is at api.ai-ark.com/v1/mcp and takes your API key in the URL (AI-Ark MCP docs, September 2026).
Which is better for phone numbers?
Cognism, if you need phone-verified mobiles to dial. It claims 10M+ of them (Cognism Diamond Data, September 2026). AI-Ark finds mobiles for 5 credits each and publishes no count.
What does 1M records cost on each?
Neither publishes a price at 1M. Both would use about 1,000,000 credits for 1M people with an email, and both sell that volume by quote. We do not estimate a figure.
