RocketReach and Hunter.io both sell contact data, but they sell it differently. RocketReach is a people database that returns emails and phones, billed on plans and credits. Hunter.io is an email index you query by domain or name, with prices you can read.
Verdict
- Pick RocketReach if you need phone numbers or personal emails as well as work emails. Its lookup returns all three, at 2, 3 and 6 credits (RocketReach docs, September 2026).
- Pick Hunter.io if you need work emails from a domain or a name, and you want a price list. Growth is $149 a month for 10,000 credits (Hunter pricing, September 2026).
- Pick neither if you pull people and companies by API at volume. RocketReach has no public 1M price, and Hunter's 1M price is a one-off credit pack. LeadOcean is one option: Pro is $499 a month, flat.

Data and coverage
RocketReach is the bigger database on its own claim. Its MCP docs describe 700M+ professional profiles (RocketReach MCP docs, September 2026). Hunter publishes no database size.
Neither vendor publishes a count of people with an email or a phone, so you cannot compare coverage on paper.
RocketReach starts from a person. You give it a LinkedIn URL, an email, or a name plus an employer, and it returns a profile. Hunter starts from a company domain. Domain Search lists the addresses it found there, and Email Finder returns the likeliest address for a name.
Phones separate them. RocketReach prices a phone at 6 credits per profile that has one (RocketReach docs, September 2026). Hunter's docs show a phone_number field on some results but no phone endpoint and no count (Hunter API docs, September 2026). If phones matter, RocketReach is the more direct route.
Email quality works differently too. RocketReach grades emails and charges only for A or A- grades (RocketReach FAQ, September 2026). Hunter runs its Verifier at half a credit per check (Hunter help, September 2026). Run the same 500 people through both free plans before you pay, using the inputs you really have.
API and developer experience
Both have a REST API and both answer to a GET. The difference is timing. Hunter answers in one call. RocketReach can answer with a status of progress, and you poll or register a webhook for the verified emails (RocketReach docs, September 2026).
Hunter finds an email from a name and a domain. Placeholders below stand in for a real person (Hunter API docs, September 2026).
curl -G "https://api.hunter.io/v2/email-finder" \
-H "X-API-KEY: $HUNTER_API_KEY" \
--data-urlencode "domain=acme.com" \
--data-urlencode "first_name=Jane" \
--data-urlencode "last_name=Doe"A miss costs no credit. One quirk matters in code: a rate-limited call returns 403, and 429 means you ran out of credits or plan quota (Hunter API docs, September 2026).
RocketReach looks up a person by name plus employer, or by LinkedIn URL or email (RocketReach docs, September 2026).
curl -G "https://api.rocketreach.co/api/v2/person/lookup" \
-H "Api-Key: $ROCKETREACH_API_KEY" \
--data-urlencode "name=Jane Doe" \
--data-urlencode "current_employer=Acme"Check status in the response before you trust the emails. RocketReach throttles with a 429 and a Retry-After header, which is the opposite of Hunter's 403 and 429 split (RocketReach rate limits, September 2026).
Limits differ in kind. Hunter documents each endpoint on its own, with no plan tiers. RocketReach layers minute, hourly, daily and monthly caps by plan on top of a global 10 requests a second. Setting up the API itself goes through api@rocketreach.co.
On MCP, both ship a server. Hunter's takes your API key in a header, is included in every plan and spends your plan credits (Hunter MCP, September 2026). RocketReach's signs in with OAuth 2.1 and exposes 9 tools. Search is free there, and a lookup costs a lookup credit plus an export credit (RocketReach MCP docs, September 2026).
Pricing
Figures use the monthly list price first, with the billed-yearly price after it. RocketReach's pricing page shows a bot check to automated reads, so its monthly prices come from G2, which reports them (G2, reported, September 2026).
At 10,000 records a month
Take 10,000 work emails. Hunter: 10,000 emails is 10,000 credits. Growth includes 10,000 credits a month for $149, or $104 a month billed yearly (Hunter pricing, September 2026).
RocketReach, self-serve: Ultimate is $209 a month and includes 1,000 exports a month, as G2 reports it. 10,000 exports is 10 seats, so 10 x $209 = $2,090 a month. That is our arithmetic on reported prices, not a RocketReach quote.
RocketReach, by API: a professional email costs 2 Universal Credits, so 10,000 emails is 20,000 credits. RocketReach publishes no dollar price per credit, so the cost comes from a quote (RocketReach docs, September 2026). At 10,000 records Hunter is clearly cheaper.
At 1M records a month
Hunter: 1,000,000 Search credits on Data Platform cost $6,900, paid once and valid 12 months. That is $0.0069 a credit (Hunter Data Platform, September 2026). Above 1M is custom, so 1M every month is a quote.
The all-in-one route costs more. Scale is $299 a month for 25,000 credits. The other 975,000 credits come from packs at up to $0.02 each, which is $19,500, so about $19,799 in total. Packs cap at 180,000 per purchase, so at 1M use Data Platform (Hunter help, September 2026).
RocketReach: no public 1M price. A million professional emails is 2,000,000 Universal Credits, and the docs name no dollar price for them. The highest published person lookup cap is 200,000 a month (RocketReach rate limits, September 2026). At that cap, 1M lookups takes at least five months.
Time matters for Hunter too. Email Finder allows 500 a minute, so 1,000,000 / 500 = 2,000 minutes, about 33 hours.
Where RocketReach wins
- Phones and personal emails in the same lookup. One call can return a work email, a personal email and a phone, priced at 2, 3 and 6 credits.
- A person-level database. It describes 700M+ profiles and searches by name, title and employer, not only by domain.
- A cheap seat for one rep. Pro, with email and phone, is $119 a month on monthly billing, as G2 reports it. That is below Hunter's Growth at $149.
- A standalone verify endpoint.
POST /api/v2/email/verifyruns at 300 a minute on every plan (RocketReach rate limits, September 2026).
Where Hunter.io wins
- A published price at 1M. Data Platform lists 1,000,000 credits at $6,900. RocketReach lists no dollar price at that size.
- A real free plan. Free gives 50 credits every month, and the API works on it.
- Published limits per endpoint. 15 a second and 500 a minute on Email Finder, in writing.
- Verified by default. Hunter lists auto-verified lead data on all plans (Hunter pricing, September 2026).
- A simpler API. One GET, one answer, and a key comes with a free signup.
If you need volume through an API
We build LeadOcean, so weigh this section accordingly. LeadOcean holds 693M people and 63M companies, and you reach them over REST and MCP. Free is 1,000 records, one-off, with no card. Pro is $499 a month, flat, with unlimited searches and lookups and a limit of 100 requests per second per key (LeadOcean pricing, September 2026).
For bulk work, POST /v1/exports returns up to 50,000 rows per request. The app also has an Exports page with a filter builder, a price preview and CSV download (LeadOcean exports docs, September 2026). The MCP server has 12 tools and signs in with OAuth 2.1. LeadOcean has no extension, sequencer or CRM, so keep RocketReach or Hunter for those.
